Then why stick them in the same group?
** Good example of Grime btw lol. Mad ass beat.
From what i see British Hip Hop gains more limelight and mainstream play than Grime today.

lol british rappers. the accent makes it impossible to take them seriously...

i dunno, i would say the most mainstream artists at the mo are dizzie and kano who came from grime backgrounds and possibly sway.
Kano has changed his style to appeal to the mainstream, i wouldnt say he has gone hip hop but he is less grime and more hip-pop .
Sway i was never really sure if he was grime or hip hop to be honest, dizzie has pretty much stuck to his roots.
I cant think of any british hip hop artist who has any real mainstream success though.
-

LOL dont be so sensitive. Its just my opinion. Me personally, I can't get past it. I didn't say they dont have talent. To be honest I dont like much of any kind of hip hop right now no matter where its from.Would you rather I made a post kissin their asses? OK, here you go. British hip hop is the best shit ever invented by anyone anywhere ever. Thank God for British hip hop. I don;t know what my life would be without it. Happy now?

im lazy.

In the long run....To be honest as much as i would want it to be, i don't think Grime will break out as commercial for the UK as Hip hop is for the US. Most noticeably the songs that defined grime in your eyes what would they be??
To me the ones that stood out...the likes of
Kano - Ghetto Kyote, much more other singles but i'm tired and can't remember...
Dizzee Rascal - I Luv U, Fix Up Look Sharp, etc etc. Boy In Da Corner is a better way to put it.
Lethal Bizzle - POW! (Forward Riddim)
Wiley - Most of the material he came out with in his day.
Todays generation revolve around the likes of Boy Better Know, artists who also take themself seriously like Ghetto and many other crews who're out there making a name for themselfs now.

....I just said thanks for the hate. One simple sentence, no sensitivity involved. I didn't ask for anythng else. I didn't call your opinion shit or anything. It wasn't praise for the UK scene or a neutral comment, it was a statement saying you couldn't take them seriously because of their accent. Sounds like hate to me.
-
LOL so being honest about my opinion is "hate?" I swear that must be the most misused and overused term in hip hop...

sway is dope

well it seems like wiley has got a hit with wearing my rolex but it seems more like a dance track than grime to me.
is this the direction he is going in ?
oh yeah writing this made me think of roll deep, when im ere is such a dope track

LOL so being honest about my opinion is "hate?" I swear that must be the most misused and overused term in hip hop...
It wasn't constructive criticism. It wasn't praise. It was a simple reason you disliked the Grime/Hip Hop UK scene. So i judged out it must have been hate.
If it hurts you that much, and you well and truly believe it isn't hate. I'll change what i meant instead.
"Thanks for the distaste in the UK Scene."
Anyway, yeah that Wiley Rolex single was more pointed towards dance, and we have to admit it actually did catch UKs attention quite a bit better than his past Grime hits. Lol heres me hoping he doesn't make the jump off Grime.
-
hook me up with a link for a roll deep album.

if its successful he prob will. If you look at what he did with roll deep aiming for the mainstream (avenue, shake a leg) he is desperate for some recognition outside the grime scene
-
Ahh true. I remember that lol, i won't lie, The Avenue album was something i really couldn't be bothered to listen to. It was too 'aimed for mainstream' if you might know what i mean? The only real Grimey tunes that stood out to me were:
When I'm 'ere
Poltergeist Remix.
But at least people started to recongise who Roll Deep were. Lol they must have been bubblin' when they saw their tune being played on MTV and not on a smaller channel like Channel U.

yeah. you cant blame them they have put in work over the years, but i cant see grime or british hip hop ever been successful in the uk unless its a watered down version.

Real truthful words right there lol. Even among MTV Base today i might on a seriously rare occasion catch a glimpse of a video in the Grime scene (Doin it again by Skepta, Serious by JME). US Hip Hop is here to keep the crown of Urban music.
By the way...What the fuck is with this 'Indie' music category i keep hearing about? >_> I've never really taken any notice into it. Can you explain it?

Na, todays generation i presume. I forgot about those two groups, now that i think on it i never really placed them in any category of music lool. I remember some blonde chick going on big brother like a year ago or so and commented on the little video before she entered that she liked Indie music (First reaction was....Is that some sort of new movement of music in the UK?).
The other day in college a mate of mine claimed Indie is the best music genre, needless to say i was like ??? that's opinion not fact. No one cares lol.

its gonna be guitar based music there on about, basically any british band who are new at the mo.

I think it's particularity of certain music scenes and the people who consider themselves part of them to argue their asses off about what genre is a genre in its own right and not part of what other genre, etc. I disagree with anyone who says grime is just not hiphop...it's a fusion of several elements of British urban music, sure, and of course you have to acknowledge the garage/electro/2-step/breakbeat influences which might be equally strong, but the fact remains that, while I cant speak for grime as a whole because I know too little about it, Dizzee and Kano make a type of music that is not at all clearly separable from something you could call "hiphop". I admit that I only got Dizzee's first two albums, but if he hasn't undergone a dramatic change, there's nothing wrong about calling him a hiphop artist while at the same time you can call him a grime artist, the point being that those styles are so close and that hiphop is such a broad term that it's ridiculous to try and act like there's a hella clear line to be drawn. And Kano, especially the recent stuff, not being hiphop but something so totally different the comment that he might just be a hiphop artist is to be lol'ed at (no offense Bedford, but really...) is not even debatable IMO.

its kinda like metal and punk. they are different styles but they are all rock music.

I've never seen anyone break-dancing to Mobb Deep...see, of course Grime's largely based in the garage culture, but it merged that with a lot of elements from hiphop, so I still don't see why you shouldn't consider it part of both
-
i'll agree to a certain extent, but its more certain individuals being influenced by certain genres as opposed to the scene spawning from something else....grime spawned from the streets seeping into the garage scene until it created a whole new genre...you can say it took influences from certain genres(i.e hip hop)..but hip-hop took influence from jazz, the blue etc and no-body trys to tie hip hop in with that...they both come under "urban music" but are certainly far from the same genre
not to say you cant have artists that do both well..and they certainly shouldnt be criticized for doing so..in the words of Ghetz
"sometimes i rap so they say im cheating on grime
til i slow a n*gga down like day time traffic
you man are just scared of slower tempo's
cus when theres space for more words
bet ya feel like you just sprayed a poor verse"

Off the top of my head, im only really a fan of Sway, Akala, S.A.S and Wiley. Think every1 else is average :-\

The thing i like about grime is that its different to what i can get from the USA. UK hip hop unless its about true local topics then i may as well get American acts cause the production is better. Grime offers a completely different style of production and unlike most AMerican hip hop tracks it gets me hyped.
Btw that SIncere Once Upon a Time track is fuckin crazy!!!!! And the new Dizzee is pretty cool!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDeKxqG45Rk
Some American acts have done stuff with UK grime/hip hop artists but it would take a lot of collaborations to have any UK act do well. Although theres only so long regions hold the crown in hip hop, maybe when the south falls off the UK could jump in lol
-
im making a grime thread when i get home...just to highlight the difference...then maybe heads will begin to appreciate why ppl say dizzee, kano etc have edged toward a more hip-hop sort of sound
-
Lethal Bizzle, Kano, Sway

Na G, fill me in wtf did i miss? Lol i thought Ghetto finished beefing with Boy Better Know time ago (Since Jammer is a part of it technically speaking...)
You know...once i read Kill's essay about Hip Hop relation to grime i did kind of agree, it was aimed around that same audience for the UK, something that isn't rock and emo or that crap. But you know i won't lie, StreetsAllSalute your response kept me convinced. Grime is in a whole league of it's own, it's a small one yes but i can't bring it in relation with Hip Hop now that you've pointed out how that started with the Jazz and blues and all that. And like you said Grime is heavly influenced from the Jungle Drum and Bass scene etc, that good ol' darker UK scene lol.
Also...I hate the fact at one point Grime used to be called Garage. Why the hell did they change the name, damn it confused me back then :-\ lol.
Yeah man 8) Radio /Lil sets are the best to listen to.
1 Extra Durtyy Goodz take over show was some serious entertaining shit to listen to. I need to go on the hunt for Grime sets again 8)

Not to get into technicalities on genres but back then garage and grime were different also, garage was craig david, artful dodger etc .
It was more melodic and singful, so solid then arrived and were lazely labelled as garage. After the beats got quicker, music more aggressive and the singing replaced by rapping, it became grime to me.
Garage pretty much died when grime took over but it seems to be making a comeback.

Lol i know they were different. It's the fact at the beginning of Grime right when it started and what not they called it Garage too. But at one point they randomly changed the name. So yeah confusion of name for the Genre...
