Title: Pete Rock Hints That Kanye West Is "Lazy"? (interview link inside)
Post by: Elano on May 02, 2008, 05:56:12 AM
In a newly-published interview at purist Hip Hop blog UnKut.com, legendary producer, emcee and deejay Pete Rock seems to be criticizing Kanye West, an artist who many critics have aligned as a disciple of the Chocolate Boy Wonder. The interview originally appeared in Hip-Hop Connections magazine.

After the interviewer mentioned that West had told Scratch magazine,"I'll sample drums off of a Pete Rock instrumental album if they're open," the trailblazing New York producer stated, "I believe it! I hear my snares out there, and I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s fuckin’ crazy, man!’ I feel like that’s lazy shit. You obviously don’t love it as much as I do, because for you to not go out there and find it on your own…you’ll find so much if you just take the time out to go dig, man. We do all the hard work so y’all can just snatch our records up and listen for open snares and kicks? That’s some wack shit. I respect cats that come with their own sound."

Although at no point did Pete Rock mention West in his answer, he did go on to cite J. Dilla as an example of a top-notch producer using his own drum programming for records.
In addition to using Pete Rock drums, West interpolated the producer's biggest hit with former partner CL Smooth on Graduation's first single "Can't Tell Me Nothin'." The closing line, "When the reminisce over you, my God," is borrowed from "T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You)," the 1992 dedication to the late "Trouble" T-Roy from Heavy D & The Boys.
Whether it will be sampled or not, Rock is releasing an instrumental album to his latest effort NY's Finest on May 13

This interview actually appeared a few months ago in Hip-Hop Connection magazine in the UK. PR comes across badly in it, I think. No one doubts that he's a hip-hop legend. Shit, 'The Main Ingredient' is one of my favourite albums. But in these recent interviews he comes across like a bitter old dude who thinks he has something to prove, when he really doesn't. It's a shame.

What's funny is that the artists that these rap producers sample from think the same thing about them....

yeah it's somewhat a double standard for pete but i sorta feel what he's sayin. pete rock probably spends his whole life digging thru records trying to find the right drum/kick/snare/etc and he's mad cuz people are wanting to reap the benefits of his labor without doing any!
