Title: Doug Collins named as head coach for the Chicago Bulls
Post by: Halu Sination on May 29, 2008, 09:10:18 AM
The Chicago Bulls' next head coach will reportedly be a familiar face.

Numerous media outlets reported Thursday that the Bulls will hire Doug Collins as their new head coach.

Earlier this month, Collins told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that he had "no interest" in coaching again.

Collins, currently an NBA analyst with TNT, last coached in 2002 with the Washington Wizards. He also coached the Detroit Pistons and the Bulls, compiling a 332-228 record. He has a career 15-23 record in the postseason.

Collins was fired by the Bulls in 1989, despite leading the team to the Eastern Conference finals. He was replaced by Phil Jackson, who went on to coach the team to six NBA titles.

Expected to contend in the Eastern Conference after reaching the second round of the playoffs last season, Chicago plummeted, losing 49 games. Coach Scott Skiles got fired in December, and interim coach Jim Boylan lost his job after the season finale. But suddenly, luck seems to be smiling on the Bulls.

Chicago will pick first overall in the 2008 draft after winning the draft lottery.

Collins also had a solid NBA playing career, averaging 17.9 points in eight seasons after being selected No. 1 overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1973 draft out of Illinois State. He was selected to four All-Star games.

It's yet to be seen, but I am not thrilled about this choice. And he has said on many occasions he was burnt out with coaching and this is a very young team.

I'm not hating on him, I just hope mentally and emotionally he can handle it this time around. But as a coach I think he is good. MJ did not think so but I thought he was decent. Hell I could barely take the season the Bulls had. I could not imagine it as a coach. I know me. I would go borderline postal.  ;D

^Keep dreaming...this hire isn't final, either way. LOL. I doubt he'll get the job...or maybe it's just that I don't think anyone is dumb enough to hire him.

Alright, NOW it's final...and Jeff Hornacek is about to be the lead assistant, too.

Collins, Hornacek to lead Bulls (http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=8883','501')

Update: A source close to the situation has told HOOPSWORLD that Jeff Hornacek will likely be lead assistant for the Bulls under the new Doug Collins regime in Chicago.  The same source went on to suggest that Collins may be a short-term solution for the Bulls, while Hornacek--under Collins' guidance--would be the long-term solution for Chicago's head coaching position.
***
Remember that long list of assistant coaches the Bulls were looking at for their new head coach? Turns out they crumpled the thing up and threw it away, hiring instead somebody who wasn't even on the stinkin' radar.

Doug Collins, welcome back to the Chicago Bulls.

Now, with the number one overall pick and an extremely intriguing coaching hire, people in Chicago have all but forgotten how miserable this last season was.

That doesn't mean this latest move will go championed without any speculation. When held up to certain lights, Collins could either be exactly what the Bulls need or Scott Skiles 2.0.

On the bright side, Chicago is the youngest team in the league and is about to get younger when they take a 19-year-old with the first overall pick next month. Collins is known as one of the greatest teachers in the game and has proven with his TNT analyst work that he's got one of the soundest basketball minds in the business. Put a good teacher with a group of eager young kids and you might have a recipe for success.

The thing is, Bulls GM John Paxson probably wouldn't have generated significant confidence from his players by hiring an assistant like Brian Shaw or Tyrone Corbin. After missing out on Mike D'Antoni and having Avery Johnson show only minimal interest, it seemed like there were no other established coaches left to check out. Now the Bulls have a guy who's earned a solid reputation around the league and knows the ropes of being a successful head coach.

He knows the organization because he's coached here before (albeit almost twenty years ago), and his no-nonsense approach will be good for guys like Joakim Noah, who obviously has had some legal issues lately.

Now the bad—Collins originally quit coaching because the grind of the job got to be too much for him. He often has stated that he loves his analyst job because it's so much low-stress. In the last year he's turned down serious coaching offers from the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks for that very reason. Can he handle the stress this job creates after being away for so long?

Also, Collins has a losing career record in the playoffs, so while he may be a good teacher (he's turned teams around to double-digit improvements in wins in the first year of each of his three coaching stints), one has to wonder if he's equipped for life beyond development. Can he groom a champion out of this group?

In any event, this hire is a nice response to the D'Antoni fiasco a few weeks ago. With Collins and either Derrick Rose or Michael Beasley, the Bulls should have nothing but positives heading into next season.

Wrong!

Quote
Doug Collins will not become the next coach of the Chicago Bulls after a mutual agreement with team owner Jerry Reinsdorf, according to ESPN.com.

"I just knew over the last few days that Jerry was really struggling over whether or not to do this, and I didn't want Jerry to have those struggles," Collins told the Chicago Tribune. "I love him. And I didn't want him feeling that kind of angst."

"This is absolutely mutual," Collins said. "When this first came about, there was a tremendous amount of excitement about this possibility. And I'm losing that. The feeling now is more, 'Should I do this?' Once I got to that point, it meant no. I always make decisions yes is yes, no is no and maybe is no."

Chicago will continue their search for a new coach.

"As time went on, he came to realize that there are good coaches out there and we will be able to get somebody and that it's more important for us to maintain our friendship. I didn't push him to this. And I'm disappointed because I won't be reunited with Doug. But in my heart, I know he made the right decision," Reinsdorf told the Tribune.

Collins is a amazing announcer,  I don't know what some of you guys are talking about.  He knows so much about the game,  he is a pleasure to listen to,  great announcer.

LOL...Collins is an idiot. He makes the most obvious observations and is extremely biased with his announcing. I'd rather listen to Jeff Van Gundy, and that's saying a lot.
