does the artist like get 60% of the money, wer the rest goes to the label or is it depending on the contract?
i dont kno much about the business side of the music but jsu wondering how much do artists take from ther album sales?
-
All depends on your contract. Master P changed that whole game with the independent label deals.
-
can sum1 give an example please? eg dpg album, anythn
-
you should ask shade sheist this question,i think he could give you the best answer on it yell
-
shae wer ya at?
-
It's generally around 50 cents to a dollar per album. It varies depending on the contract. And out of the money that you get, they deduct recording costs, music video costs, etc.
-
^^^ thats what i heard. Minus the dedcutions for videos and what not. I dont think they do take much.
50 cets per record when records were being sold16-17 dollars in the late 90s is not a lot.
but then again guys like snoop, dmx and specilay jay-z during those days were selling like 4-5 and 6 million records.

Album sales are not based on how many people actually went out and bought the album..
It is based on how many RETAILERS and WHOLESALERS purchase album units in bulk..
When your favorite artist went Platinum.. some of them actually did have a Million+ people go and pick up copies..
others.. may have sold 15 copies.. but SHIPPED 1Million... makin them Platinum!
..this is nothing new.
as far as how much they get paid.. It depends on the deal.. but back in the day, it WAS cents!
I was one of, if not THE FIRST, *New* artist from the West to get an R&B budget for an album ($1Mil+)
AND.. the first to receive more than a dollar per unit sold.. under a major.. very rare!!
this was back in day...
fast forward to later in this decade.. We sold over 175K units collectively in 2006..
we sold units at 10 dollars even.. we pocketed a minimum of $8 a unit!
a KOCH deal gives artists 3 to 5 dollars a unit.. BUT.. they engage in recouping monies spent.
WE (PYO) pay for our own advertising, promo, etc.. so when we recoup.. we're essentially paying ourselves!
It gets no better than Putting Yourself Out.. otherwise.. dont u think I wouldve signed to Interscope or Universal by now?
and yes.. they offered. You thought Quik and AMG were the only west artists getting major attention!?
I wish I didn't have to keep explaining that MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS RAPE.
Furthermore.. who gives a fu*k if 1million people like you all at once........ if YOU DONT MAKE A PROFIT!
If I sell to only 1000 people.. I can stand to make 10K.. so do that 175 times.. and well.. u have enough money to run ur own PYO!
Peace & Respect

That is a legitimate dream of mine, Homie!
I essentially broke the hinge on the door of the Indie Game..
and yes, I kinda cheated.. with my previous Mainstream success being my crowbar..
but the thing is.. only my inner circle seems to know how to push this door.. while everyone else is pulling!
how does that one GTA3 song go..? oh yeah.. GUESS THAT'S WHY THEY BROKE AND YOU'RE SO PAID!

Again, your Previous post was very informative!
-
thanks for the info Sheist.
I had a feeling that's how album sales work.
if the artist doesn't sell well, then the retailers get fucked. haha
-
Shade knows the fucking business 8)
-
Well... Shade doesn't wake up in the morning worrying about much.. if anything.. let's say that!
I always wanted to share this info with the public.. but I didn't want to come off any type of way..
a lotta cats would've thought I was hatin on a supposed "platinum" artist when really I'm not..
just tellin it how it is..
now that im financially good.. I can afford to talk about topics that used to be off-limits..
Infomal Introduction was my best album indeed.. but I only saw money from touring and features..
BTWBTH is next on that list.. independently released.. and we pocketed close to a quarter mill off of sales from just my website..
which means, Im not even including itunes and all the other digital stores that now carry our product!
...which doubles anything we sold to date!
-
shade i have a question? how did u get timbaland on track money owners?
im curios?

and what about artist dont get credited?
is it like: "if your name appears in the credits we must pay you, so we leave your name out"?
-
Props for replying Shade. There's one thing I don't get; not to say that I don't believe you abut your independet game but if it's like that, why don't your Jay-Z's, 50's, Snoop's... sign to an independent label instead of being on major ?

Well for one, if your successful on a major and i mean massively then yes you will always make more money than indi cause you can garner more touring, endorsement and publicity and thus generate earn more cash. The other reason - and it links directly in with my first is Fame.
Both those are only applicable to about 5% of the total in industry and thats why indi is a popular route as you can still make good money on a massively smaller fan base/exposure platform.
-
That does make sense, thanks.

If appearing in the credits meant you got paid.. homie.. we'd all be broke..
There is prolly over a million dollars in fees, publishing and royalties I couldve collected, but instead waived credit
for the benefit of progression..

If you do a lil research.. you will discover that Jay-Z is preparing to sign a RECORD deal with Live Nation (an events company)..
and 50 Cent is considering signing his G-Unit label to Myspace Records after his next and final album on Interscope..
They would've done this earlier.. but they were TRAPPED in their BS major deals! I wasn't.. so I got a head start to the finishline!!

tq explained it a few years ago nicely on tqboard...
Basically U got millions of people making music. Thousands trying to get deals and hundreds with deals already. Tens get released. Less than that blow the fu©k up. One out of a million can say, when it's all said and done, "Damn I made a lot of money making music!".
Thank God that today I can say that I made, and make a lot of money making music. Remember when TLC and Toni Braxton among others were filing bankruptcy left and right? U know why? It's because they made about a nickel for every record they sold! I mean these are some of the biggest artists to touch the earth. Some of the best albums ever! Sure to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame someday. Over 10 million records sold! But what is 10 million nickels? To split between 3 people? That ain't gonna last very long yall, ya feel me? And I guarantee u they worked their fingers to the bone! It's a damn shame. I was headed down the same road at 1st, but the hustler in me raised a red flag. I had to get my paperwork right dawgs. This ain't no soup kitchen. I make music 4 money so pay me muthafu©ka. That's my motto. Because of that, I may never be as big as u guys would like me to be. I'm sorry, but I just don't take no sh!t cuz I don't have to. The main reason that " Gemini" was never released by Cash Money was that Baby didn't have his paperwork right. He would've had to pay me more than he could even make off me, so it wasn't in his best interest. Then he figured out that he would have to pay me to let me go! My man went on for damn near two years not knowing what the fu©k to do! It was hilarious, but I completely understand! He's a business man and I am too. Our dealings weren't gonna come out good for both of us. But I still walked outta there with a check... ;D It's all about what u sign yall... IT'S ALL ABOUT WHAT U SIGN! U HAVE TO READ AND UNDERSTAND YOUR WHOLE CONTRACT! After reading so many, I've come to the conclusion that I'll stay independent. I got my thugz with me so what else do I need? Let's do some math. If I can make 8 bucks a record do I really need to sell a million of them? I mean don't get me wrong, it would be nice, but is it neccessary? I ain't hard to please. fu©k stuntin'. I got a couple of cribs, a couple of rides, a couple of toys here and there, and my family ain't hurtin' for nothing. All praises due to God man! The ONLY thing important to me at this point in my career is that YOU GUYS get the music that u want from me. And as much of it as u can stand! I'm gonna give u straight up TQ sh!t. Period. Yall cool with that? I mean, we been down for a long time. I think we know each other pretty well. All we got is us. These R&B niggas are always gonna sing bullsh!t, cuz bullsh!t is what allows them to feed their families. Go figure. U will ALWAYS have me... ALWAYS. I love yall.
There are some drawbacks tho'...
I don't have control over where my records are and aren't. I don't have the money, power, or staff of a major label. Some people just won't be able to find my sh!t in their neighborhoods. Period! Some people always will. That's the way of the gun yall. U gotta play the game. I can't do anything about that. I try my best, but I can only reach so far... I will never stop trying though, believe that... And I'll tell u what we do have...

TQ is a close friend of mine.. and has been forever..
and funny enough.. we had THIS conversation in a hotel suite
in Vegas, while we were chillin with Mariah Carey, Kurupt and Mizza..
If you notice.. he almost said exactly what I said..
..but then TQ is also on my wealth level..
Take this info and use it.

Again On Point!
I was going to say the exact same thing!.Being credited to a song does not mean automatic check. This remuneration could be handed out in various other ways!
If the artist uses this opportunity as a Resume to better themselves it will all even out in the end!
If the artist whines and moans about, then they won't get any way...
props

why are artists dont get credits sometimes then?

What's Mariah's stand on it? She's been signed to a major her entire career.

LMFAO!!
Internet sarcasm at its finest.
-
I believe he was really askin.. and if so..
MARIAH is in another league..
she collects 9 figures simply for signing her name on the contract.
Not to mention that the R&B and Hip-Hop industries differ SIGNIFICANTLY.
But let's say Mariah decided she wanted to PYO..
She would be richer than Bill Gates.. her fanbase is undeniable!
-
why are artists dont get credits sometimes then?
Again READ THE CONTRACT.
some artist choose not to get paid but have their name credited.
Others want to get paid for their work no matter how significant or minute it may be.
it all depends on the mindset of the artist and the person to whom their are working for at that moment!
There is No legitimate or concise answer to that question.
Unfortunately in business especially in the Music business, you will get shafted by someone at some point.
what happens afterwards is very important. You can whine/moan, :'( or you can turn it to your advantage. ;)
By right you should get paid for whatever you input into a project-but if the budget is not enough, will you decide to cut your losses and say No.. :-\ ???
or work with what you have and try and do your best? ;)
Hope this helps!

Sounds like you've been working next door in our office building.. lol.

That is some deep shit, Shade. You know the industry so damn well, you make me want to go independent. This rap shit is getting "easier" and "rougher" by the minute.
Now, what would you say about the internet industry? The only outlets I know so far are Apple iTunes, Napster and Amazon. Every one of those P2D (pay-to-download) services are making incredible revenue, but I don't know how or why the internet hustle is different from the physical hustle. Instead of CDs, vinyls or tapes, it's just MP3/WMA format (and let me remind all y'all, I hate DRM). And I'm being told, the internet hustle has more economical value than having to publish, print and ship physical media. In fact, how much does it cost to print, say, 1000 CDs, tapes or vinyls whether you on a major or independent deal?
Here's a cool story example: if you check out Pocos Pero Locos Rewind and hear the new Mr. Shadow interview with Crhymes of Tha C.O.R. (courtesy of dagosd.com), you'll hear how he made $350,000 on a mere 50,000 units with no airplay, no promotion, no respect.
Shade, here's a question I want to ask: is it still possible to pay/commission a well-known musician/artist for an appearance on an album even if you're unknown to the public or the mainstream? There were two artists I wanted to link up back in 2006, but a friend of his told me that one artist was bound by a major label contract which prevented him from working with unknowns or less-than-average artists. I'll PM you the explanation, but don't tell anyone.
