Title: Boxing: Breaking News! Floyd Mayweather Jr. announces his retirement
Post by: Hatesrats™ on June 06, 2008, 04:43:05 PM
It looks like Floyd Mayweather Jr. has called off his rematch Vs. Oscar De La Hoya and will retire
from Boxing as an active fighter leaving the sport with a very sour tatse in it's mouth.....
considering all the matchup's PBF left without taking, such as The winner of the Cotto/Margarito match
and or the ODLH rematch.

Personaly I say PEACE out Floyd.
if 39w-0L's-25 KO's vs. lesser comp is good enough for you that's cool with me.
(If you can live with it, so can I)

The De La Hoya rematch would've been a waste of time.

My thoughts exactly. Ricky Hatton must of challenged him to a rematch.

I'll never have him on the level of Sugar Ray (Robinson & Leonard), Hearns, Ali, Marciano, Louis or any of the other all-time greats.

in Floyd's defense....everyone out there was lesser competition. Some people might not like the fact that he wasnt a brawler or a one punch KO guy. But you cant argue, he was dominant. His skill in the ring was always his hand speed, footwork, and quickness. Everyone who has been in the ring with him has said he has deceptive power, but that wasnt his main talent. You cant fault him for utilizing his talents in the ring to win fights. Boxing is about winning the fight (within the rules). Whether it be out pointing them, or KO'ing them. He did both to every opponent he faced...and none of them could do it to him. If he was to fight the "crowd pleasing" style of just brawling...it would be completely stupid on his part because that isnt where his talent lies. It would have been like convincing George Foreman that he should try and win a title by dancing and boxing rather then power punching. He would have failed. Bottom line is, he's one of the most impressive boxers ive seen in a LONG time. Maybe Sugar Ray was the last boxer I can remember that could completely confuse his opponents in the ring like Mayweather does. Even when they start off strong....somewhere around the middle of the fight every fighter that fights him starts to look sloppy and unsure of themselves. True he hasnt fought Cotto, but Floyds at the end of his career and Cotto is up and coming. Its really only a lose, lose situation for Mayweather...and I dont even think he truly LOVES this sport. He's just good at it.

May was easily pound for pound the best boxer out there. Dunno why he'd retire like this, though. Pussy ass shit, if you ask me.

oh, one more thing. Floyd was ranked as pound for pound the best fighter in the world when he beat De La Hoya. Why would he need to give him a rematch? He was the top dog being challenged and won. That matchup is bullshit. its only for the sake of money.

re-matches and trilogies are a part of boxing history.... everybody wants to see if lightning can strike twice or if someone can avenge a loss.

^Considering the first one was a close fight, Mayweather should not bitch out of the match.

it was "close" to most casual boxing fans. Mayweather outclassed De La Hoya though. All Oscar did was throw flurries at the ends of rounds that were mostly missed punches. But since the crowd was a De La Hoya crowd...they would get all hyped when he'd do that shit. But really, Mayweather made him look lost in the ring at times.

my theory is that with his big spending ways, he isn't going to find too many $20 million opportunities (like the WWE) and end up having to fight again to earn some money so he can avoid an Evander Holyfield situation.

by then .... he'll have lost a few steps.... and end up facing that big loss that he so fears right now.

I think so too.  In the espn article they talked about how he had been doing it for 20 years and how he never had to work a job.  I respect the brotha for decision.  I think it has gone way beyond who and what if, I'm sure he's not scared of anyone and really just doesn't wanna do it anymore

TRANSLATION: Floyd did not get the money offer he wanted for a rematch with Oscar. They add a couple more millions and I bet he gets back in the ring.

Nah, nikka has no heart for fighting anymore ..  He just wants that WWE  cheese now..

Below is the letter that Mayweather sent to the media announcing his retirement.

Dear Media:
It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today. I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport. I have said numerous times and after several of my fights over the past two years that I might not fight again. At the same time, I loved competing and winning and also wanted to continue my career for the fans, knowing they were there for me and enjoyed watching me fight. However, after many sleepless nights and intense soul-searching I realized I could no longer base my decision on anything but my own personal happiness, which I no longer could find. So I have finally made up my mind, spoken to my family, particularly my mother, and made my decision. I am sorry I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays ahead, including the one right around the corner. But there comes a time when money doesn't matter. I just can't do it anymore. I have found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time. Finally, I want to personally thank all of my fans for their loyalty and dedication as my career comes to a close. I always believed that their enthusiasm and support helped carry me to victory with every fight I ever had. It was a great joy to have fought for all of you. Now I hope you understand my decision and wish me well with the rest of my life.

I would have liked to see him fight Cotto, and there could have been some other good fights, but I can't knock the man for his greatness and going out on top. If his heart isn't in it, he is papered up enough to where he doesn't need to fight again. He could very well come back, only time will tell.

Good Luck to the guy. he is a major league dick of a guy but who can blame him for wanting to get out of the ring? There is always someone out there waitng to knock him out. So get out before it's too late. Floyd is a multi millionare so he can sit comfortable and live off that rather than get punched in the face for a living

When u dont love something enough to do it to ur best, why do it..

Props for not selling out and keeping fighting just for the money.  Cuz thats what the Dela Hoya rematch woulda gave him.

and were criticized for it. I remember one quote from Max Kellerman went something like this, "It's ok for the casual boxing fan to get confuzed by Oscar throwing a flurry of missed punches at the ends of rounds....its not ok for professional judges to".

or is a "Tuffman" follower who think's MMA is anywhere near Boxing.

I'm thinkin' Floyd Jr. can prob buy the UFC if he desires...lol

MMA is cool and all, and I respect the fighters. But I would take a Boxing After Dark main event over a Pay Per View UFC main event (even if i didnt have to pay). Let alone a Boxing Pay Per View.

for real.  boxing still has a following, a big following, but MMA keeps getting bigger and bigger.  its more exciting, faster and much more brutal.  i dont really follow either, but if i got free tickets to a MMA even, and a boxing event, that were being held on the same night, unless it was someone that i know from boxing (which is only a handful of people), i would hit up MMA (even if i didnt know anyone on the card).

I dunno maybe I'm getting old cuz I don't like to see that kinda brutal violence anymore. (MMA).    I really like the aspects of boxing where u are in a more controlled environment and u have to really finetune and get technical with ur game..  I guess I like the calculation of boxing more than MMA.
