Portugal Vs. Germany
Over the years i have been a Portugal fan for some unknown reason, i love watching these guys play. I like the technicality of Deco, i love the jump of Ronaldo and i like what Maniche does for them down the middle, now having said that. I have this weird hunch that Croatia have woken up something huge, even though Germany did not play that great against Austria. I hope Schweinsteiger (sp?) gets into the starting 11. In my honest opinion Ballack, Podolski >>>>> Deco, Ronaldo. I hope i have to eat my words because i predicted Portugal as tournament faves before it all started. All i know is that i have to study for my finals and i have to go get my ever so important licence reinstated but fuck all of that, ima stay home and watch this classic.
Germany 2 Portugal 1

Croatia Vs. Turkey
Wow, those pesty Croats, suprising but not so suprising, you feel me? Germany gets its revenge in the Semis.
Croatia 2 Turkey 0
Hold on its unfair to not mention the Turks, specially after how they got here. I missed their final game because of i was at university but im sorry the cindrella story ends here. Prepare for a team who is focused for the whole 90 minutes.

Netherlands Vs. Russia
Another blowout?
Holland 5 Russia 0

Spain Vs. Italy
Whoa?!

Portugal vs Germany
Croatia vs Turkey   ?
Netherlands vs Russia
Spain vs Italy

semi finals: Portugal vs Turkey
               Netherlands vs Italy

Turkey vs Croatia is completely open, but I'm pretty sure about the others

We sucked against Holland. It's 1 game, not 3. We played better than Romania imho. And we won against France. I know you feel pretty confident after a 3-0 win against us, but don't take us out so early.

^ I think it can go both ways. Spain is playing well this tournament, but Italy is growing.

I would have given France a better chance against Spain, but either way it will be an entertaining game :)

Portugal - Germany: Outcome is completely open. The Portuguese have been better (except against Switzerland, but that was the B-Team) and their players are way ahead of the Germans in most respects. Ronaldo > overrated ass Ballack, easily. The German defense has shown weaknesses that should have consequences against a team on the level of Portugal. However, after that 0-2 against Switzerland, although there was no Deco, Ronaldo or Simao involved, maybe the Portuguese flow has been kind of interrupted, knahmean. Also, the Germans tend to get better and better as the tournament continues and that's why I think a victory against the Portuguese is possible for them if they get back on the level of '06...they will have to improve though.
Prediction: ?

Croatia - Turkey: Croatia is strong, they came in first before Germany for a reason, their B-Team was enough to easily beat Poland. They're tactically brillant and technically strong, they barely ever fuck up. Which is why I think it's gonna be extremely difficult for Turkey to get past them, this is not the type of shaky defense the Czechs and the Swiss had, this is a defensively compact team that knows better than most other teams how to choke off anything you try. The Croatian offense isn't bad either, they're not like the Dutch or the Spanish, but they do know how to score goals.
Prediction: Croatia

Holland - Russia:
You guys are underestimating Russia, did you watch them last night? Of course, Holland will be favored, but I have the feeling some of y'all have this notion that Russia's not even gonna seriously try and I think that's dangerous, I hope the Dutch are not gonna play with that type of attitude. The way Russia kicked out Sweden yesterday was classy, they played quick, efficient soccer and they had improved seriously in the defensive department since the match against Spain. If those Russians become really safe in defense, that time might be up to bigger things, with those creative players and those fast attacks. Nothing to add about Holland, they've been the shit so far and if they don't fall off seriously, they should beat Russia, but I'm just saying, don't act like Russia's some crap team...
Prediction: Holland

Spain - Italy
I've said it before and I'm saying it again, I don't have much of an idea about what to expect here. Spain is the team that usually seems bound for glory at first and then fails, Italy is the team that usually goes into the tournament half asleep, saves its ass on the verge of embarrassing itself and ends up among the top four. That said, of course Spain (Spain A at least) has been remarkably better so far and I def won't be getting mad if they kick some ass. If this great team keeps living up to its potential, they're pretty much on a par with the Dutch, which should make for an interesting semi. But like I said and like most people already know, with the squadra it ain't usually over that quick...
Prediction: ?

Dr. Janitor, please. Italy has better chances than France to beat them, and I bet they will. I rather think the Potugal germany game will be close, if we somehow manage to get to the penalty kicks, we will beat portugal (I'm sure lunatic can remember Schalke vs Porto in the cl :P)

yup, I forgot that he's a penalty killer. But against England you could have a telephone box as gk and  still win.  Plus we're invincible in shootouts.

penalty kicks would be exciting; Germany may have a LIL edge as far as shooters go, but there's nothing wrong with Ronaldo, Deco, Simao, and I have faith in Mountinho, Gomes & Petit, Carvalho and Pepe aren't half bad either

were we really have the advantage is in goal, Ricardo is one heck of a penalty shot saver.

no there isn't..i am not a fan of his little stutter step that he always does (i find that should be banned, messes with the goalie a bit to much)..what are u basing it off? him missing the penalty in CL? he's been a great penalty shooter for Portugal over the time (against england twice) and for man united.

He missed in another CL game too. Germany will smell their chance if he takes a penalty.

I'd rather see the game end in regular time though :-\

he is a rather good penalty taker though.

I'd also rather see the game end in regular time, penalties make me too nervous lol; we are just discussing penalties because dr jan itor brought up the possibility

on another note if i was Scolari, Germany is a MUCH bigger and stronger team than us and that really scares me on set pieces; they're average height is 6'1

i would start Veloso over Mountinho (the czech goal off a header on us was due to Mountinho's poor set piece defending due to his small size) and possibly Quaresma/Nani over the under sized Simao (as much as i love simao, he is extremely tiny; i'd only make this move though if quaresma/nani promised not 2 dive as much as they do, if they do, its a waste of a move).

^scratch that, Scolari has said it will be the same lineup that defeated Turkey & Czech

Ok, seriously and un-wiggerishly though: Germany wasn't bad tonight, but don't go crazy now just because you're probably full of Weissbier and your boy Ballack scored an irregular goal. It is my opinion that Portugal didn't deserve to win this, but not so much because their opponent was that much better, but rather because they made stupid mistakes and their happy-go-lucky style of defending took its toll. Let's see:

1-0: Beautiful, I didn't expect that from the Germans. The Portuguese who fucked up was the one supposed to look after Schweini, but no fucking with how they played that one. Almost Dutch :P
2-0: Average free-kick-header goal and that one demonstrated the great weakness in the Portuguese team: They don't look after single players, they just find themselves a nice spot in or around the box and watch the show. That's how you lose games against Germany.
1-2: Beautifully done at first, lucky in the end. Passes like that could have torn down the German wall (no pun really intended), but it wouldn't happen again.
3-1: Ballack being an asshole, like it or not. Ok, to be fair, many players would do that, anyways, the referee has to see it, but the way it went we got the umpteenth irregular goal falsely given in this tournament. Yet and still, the Portuguese would have had to position themselves more cleverly and Ricardo's half-hearted attempt at moving out looked bad too.
2-3: Nice goal, but too late.

Now, as for some of your comments: Don't talk shit about that yellow card or Ronaldo's reaction in that scene, nigga please. Friedrich acted like a pathetic son of a bitch, intentionally stepping on Ronaldo's foot because he'd like to be him. Say anything you like about how Germany was the shit, but don't run your mouth about this one. Just don't :sshh:

As for the rest of the Ballack-Ronaldo argument, I simply disagree. Yes, Ronaldo is a diva, a crybaby and a little bitch. But that doesn't say anything about his skills, just like Schweini's hairstyle doesn't make him a bad player. This emo kid called Ronaldo just happens to be the best player in the world at the moment, and tonight's game did little to defeat that notion. Ronaldo played relatively well, although it wasn't the best game of his career obviously, but in half one he did a lot for the Portuguese offense and he had some good moments. The fact that Ronaldo's team lost and Ballack's team won doesn't make Ballack a better player than Ronaldo. Apart from his irregular goal, Ballack didn't really contribute all that much tonight, he was solid and that's it. I am not at all saying Ballack is a bad player, but I just think he's overrated, and tell me about one scene tonight that's supposed to change my mind.

Overall, the German victory is ok, but it wasn't plain amazing, except for the beautiful opener. It was solid, but when they meet a defense that deserved to quit the day job (probably Croatia), I don't think they're gonna turn free kicks into goals with such ease and it will be a different game.

If that's true, ok, let's see when I get a replay...but you do understand that he meant Friedrich stepping on Ronaldo's foot AFTER the foul when he was leaving the scene, right? The foul itself is NOT what Ronaldo made any kind of fuss about. So whether it really hurt Ronaldo or not, Friedrich was a fucking asshole in that scene.

So don't give me that shiet!! And I already addressed that little ass push that every player does!! Hey, it's all peaceful rivalry, ignore the stuff I TYPED IN CAPITALS, I was just talking shit.

Ok, now, first off: I do know your knowledge on soccer is, as far as I can tell, at least respectable, I'm just giving you shit for supporting teams I don't like, but as I've said before, don't take me too seriously when I'm obviously just e-thugging for fun.

Ronaldo-Ballack: Ok, as long as you agree Ronaldo's got more talent, I don't think we actually have much of an argument. I admire him as a player and only for that reason, I do my best to ignore his character, which is of course [insert insult].

As for Pepe, he just stopped Klose like that when the game was going on and got a yellow, right? Sure, that's a dumb foul, but he got what he deserved and it wasn't what's-the-english-word, a Tätlichkeit (goes to show I barely ever watch soccer in English). Friedrich's little step on Ronaldo's foot, on the other hand, was. Ok, admittedly, there's no proof it was intentional, but the way he did that was strong evidence, he just stepped on Ronaldo's foot when Ronaldo was on the ground AFTER the foul and walked away. Even if he'd done it inadvertently (there's like a 0.00002% chance), he would have felt it and not reacted.

And as for Ballack's goal, like I said, he's definitely not the only one who'd do it, but it's obviously irregular. What offside decision are you referring to? I only remember one, which looked very correct to me (and the TV commentators, Volker Finke included, and everyone else), but I'm not sure which scene you mean...

Yo I watched the game in public and I kinda missed what Friedrich "did". I saw the normal foul and Ronaldo's reaction. If Friedrich really did some shady shit AFTER the foul, then that could explain Ronaldo's crying. I also have to see a review of that off-side call on television. But it looked legit to me.

well 7even, you can say what you want about Ballack, he's a great player and such, but you can cross "leadership" out of your sig.
But you're right about that offside situation in the first half when Hitzlsperger was through, it was legit, but in the second half there was a situation where they made a wrong offside call against Portugal, so it was balanced.
But I didn't notice that Friedrich incident too.

Maybe they didn't show that Friedrich incident on German TV!! That could explain it. I thought Ronaldo was just doing that screaming randomly to provoke a yellow card. So I was wrong, but it ain't my fault.  :)

Could be, although that would be a bitch move by German TV (showing Ronaldo crying, but suggesting he does it for fun rather than because a German got ugly on him = lying = cowardice = bitch move). But I watched it on Swiss TV, so that's a possible explanation.

As for the offside calls, I'm so used to them being wrong now, I don't really notice them anymore maybe. There should be some electronic system, enough is enough.

Why does everybody on here seem to hate Portugal? I mean, I didn't spend last night weeping because they're out, but they're a good team and they play attractive soccer. The Germans have improved a lot technically and in terms of watchability since Klinsmann took over the team and reshaped it, so I'm not hating. Still, it surprises me everyone from Dutch to Italian seems to have been cheering last night.

for real I don't think you can call anybody the best player now. There are too many good players.
I mean last year it was Kaka, before that Ronaldinho was considered the best for 2-3 years, but nobody could dominate football for 5+ years like Zidane did. He was the best this year, but you can't call him best player in his sport. Next year it will probably be Messi or anybody else

What a wonderful picture, good job germany
That's an old picture nothing to do with Germany...although, 7even, do you know when it was actually taken?

I do think that Ronaldo's the best player out there at the moment. Just lay off the bitch-made shit for a second, no one is denying that, not even Lunatic, so why do you come up with that in a discussion about his skills? That's like "Yeah, Ronaldinho used to be great, BUT DID YOU SEE THE NIGGA'S TEETH?!?". Any of you guys claiming he's not the best out there at the moment, or just that there is no single best player, say some names......? Who else is up there?

As for the '06 red card, Ronaldo might have made a fuss about that, but Rooney was a scumbag. You just don't step on people's nuts unless you don't have any yourself. I hate it when homosoccerthugs act like that makes Ronaldo a bitch and Rooney was straight gangsta. Then again, Lunatic brought that up himself here and so no one really said anything like that in this thread, I just know I heard it before. Some English are good at being crybabies as well, anyways.

Oh yeah, and Zidane was great, no doubt, but I always felt he was slightly overrated and I never really liked him. Ok, he's French. Still, I used to admire him in earlier years, I loved his style around '98-'00, but the longer he was around, the less dominant he became and many people would still act as if a successful 10-metre backward pass to his own goal keeper was a fucking miracle, long as it came from Zidane. That's when it deteriorated. And the way he went out was just pathetic, whatever Materazzi said. If there's any way of proving you lack the greatness of a true leader, it's letting down your team in the 110th minute of a World Cup Final because of having to be a little soccer pitch thug.

well, Kaka is up with Ronaldo. Robben is also on the same level, And give Messi another 2 years and he will likely if he as good (of course if he's not injured all the time). There are several players who are not skillwise up there with Ronaldo, or don't get the same attention because they play different/ are not circus players.
Is Ronaldo skills wise the best player "at the moment"?  probably
Is he the best player in the world? Nah, I think not.

He was the best player this season, he was the main factor for Man Utd's success, and his developpment  was crazy, but still

I judge players by their performance over 3+ years + their success, and not by their skills. Dude's 23, and you call him the best player in the world.LOL He isn't gone through all the depths and higths of football, if he's through that we'll see if he's a true player. Owen also was also as one of the best players at that age and look what happened to him. I told Elano about Ibrahimovic the same. Yes he has some serious skills, but has he ever proved with consistent performance to be top 5 in the world? Hell nah
If you continue that way, you'll have 3-5 best 'player of the world' in the next few years.
If you'd asked one year ago, 60-80 % would've said "Oh Kaka, he is really the best player at the moment"

I don't dislike Portugal; I was actually rooting for them last night, but they never deserved the win. They play some of the nicest football, they just need to step up their fair play. They could be anyone's favorite team if they did just that.

And I'm hoping Croatia won't let Turkey get away tonight... The Turks suck, but they might just score that 1-0 and run with it...

That's the upside from your perspective though. You've ended up with a very beatable opponent, Croatia would have been a lot harder. Still, I'm not hating on Turkey. Actually, while they're boring to watch (which applies to 95% of what the Croatians did tonight too though, even with them being the better team), they're on some crazy comeback shit. They were behind in three games in a row, they won all of them in the end, and they kicked out three teams doing it lol.

Croatia was the better team tonight, but they failed to really convince me. Weak game overall, only the crazy end made up for some of it.

What a Germanesque way to win, scoring after the extra time has expired and advancing through. The big difference: the Germans often play well while doing that, while the Turks... Well, at least they were fighting for it. Plus, they're keeping the card balance up high, making it kind of impossible for themselves to play well with all those players being suspensded. Germany could get an easy game against them, as long as they keep control over the match and build up a decent margin. I'm confident in that they will.

true dat.
I like to quote myself now:

Smegma: If not us, it will be Germany, but i'm not too worried about them after that Croatia game - i think will edge them out.

You're forgetting one thing: Germans tend to become stronger during major tournaments game after game.

yeah and other teams who were fantastic in the first round but were suddenly out when the important games came (like Argentinia in 06)  and that's the danger for Holland
In one game everything is possible, so don't rely too much on these first games.

2 teams (if you count Croatia in 3) who looked good in the first ound already out (Holland, Portugal). Spain will be next.
But I can't understand Holland's performance today, that was nothing. They were really lucky to get a second chance but still messed up. They were sleepin the whole game, Russia clearly deserved the win, way more aggressive. but no dream final :(

I see that one coming too lol...and I won't even be crazy about an Italian victory cause I really love Spain. If Italy takes it, then ALL teams that came in first in group stages will have ended up losing their quarter final games.

As for today's match, I told y'all, don't underestimate the Russians. I never believed those people predicting something like 4-0 Holland, still I thought the Dutch would take it. This time. But that was a very uninspired performance, they were lucky they got another shot (1-1) and then they fucked it up badly. I was cheering for Holland in this match, but when it was over, I really couldn't be mad, those Russians just showed they're one of the most talented teams in this tournament, they played great offensive football and got a well-deserved victory. And it's not like Greece last time, somehow kicking out favored teams by boring you to death, it was just great to watch. So it's sad to see Holland out (you guys had the greatest fans by the way, I was in Berne the other day and it was one huge party), but I'm gonna be supporting those Russians of whom I had no opinion at all before

Failure. Total failure. I guess I should be lucky I was at a garden party where I hardly got to see any of it.

You know there's going to be shit, when a Hiddink-team suddenly starts performing well, as they did against Sweden. Add to that an opponent which peaked way too fucking early (I mean come on, after humiliating Italy and France, anything would have been a disappointment except for a 6-0 win). We had reason to be afraid, oh so afraid. You can't keep up a spirit like that for six matches straight. I was afraid of the impact of the whole Boulahrouz-situation (his daughter was born four months early and died this week). Afraid of having peaked too early. Afraid of anything Hiddink might have done. He did it.

I guess from this day on, there'll be a negative connotation whenever I mention my last name. I thought it would be perfectly okay, because there was no way to lose in a match where either side would be a great winner, but The Netherlands ended up a total failure, while they were practically obliged to score a total of 18 goals this tournament and take home that trophy. Some things will never change. I should get my name changed to something irrelevant, unless Hiddink manages to make it to the final and win.

Anyway, Russia >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Netherlands. So be it. Let's see what happens next. I can see the same thing happening to Spain, but please, please, if they're going to let Italy grow back into the tournament, at least make it good.

It was really sad to watch Holland go down the way the do almost every time, after telling yourself "not this time. This time they're too good", and this is really part of the reason I see Italy winning tonight. I might be wrong, and I got reason to cheer for both teams, so may the better team win, only I don't think the better team will necessarily be Spain. Spain's got that Holland vibe, and failure looks inevitable until the very moment they hold that trophy in their hands. It wasn't even like you could complain about that result (no offense), you just lost to a team that played better. The only part of the game when Holland was really equal was when they were 0-1 behind and even then both teams were on a par, no great Dutch offensive play, no creativity, no quick passing, just a rather lucky goal that wouldn't be enough in the end. It was one of the most disappointing matches in this tournament for me because of that Dutch team, although at the same time, I've become very impressed with the Russians and, once more, Hiddink.

...and that's your last name, by the way? lol, that sucks. But from what I know about the Dutch, I guess the press is (reasonably) bashing Van Basten rather than Hiddink, right?

Yeah, after this game, I'm kind of glad it's over for Italy. I really am. First off, this Spanish team might have had a very hard time today, but they were clearly better, they could have scored hadn't it been for some bad luck and a referee who can go and suck a dick, not because he favored anyone or something, but just for being plain bad. The squadra is too old, and without Cannavaro the price they had to pay for safe defending was sacrificing the offense, so what we saw tonight was the type of cattenaccio crap that would've made Cesare Maldini proud and that I was glad Lippi at least partly gave up on. It was weak, timid, slow, unimaginitive and boring, I dislike defensive football in general, but a team can use rather defensive tactics and still look good on counter attacks, which this team failed to do.

The Spanish weren't brillant, but they did a decent job trying to break through that wall and it's a pity they didn't succeed, that might have woken the Italians up and made for a better game, but it just wouldn't happen. Granted, they didn't have too many great ideas, but they got close and they could have gotten a penalty kick at some point. It's really cool to watch this Spanish team and I blame the Italians for 90% of all the boredom tonight.

It's good to see Donadoni go, I agree he's the 2nd worst coach out there, second only to Domenech. I wouldn't mind Lippi coming back at all, he shaped the campioni-del-mondo team of '06 and I think he's capable of re-shaping what's left of it.

And again, fuck Herbert Fandel. He did a shitty job. The game was not particularly unfair in general, both teams were being pretty cool with each other, so you can't say they gave him a hard time. Still, he fucked up where he could. He kept on constantly intrerrupting the game and taking the last bit of flow it might have had from it, inventing fouls when he was bored so he could blow his whistle. He overlooked fouls where he should have seen them. He gave David Villa a yellow for a "dive" that was merely a slip, and for which Villa didn't even want to get a penalty. He pulled pointless tough-guy shit talking to Torres, which probably made him feel better about himself...I really hope that was the last we've seen of him in a while.

As for Fandel... The tournament seems to be over for him, with Germany having reached the semi's.

True, they're not gonna give him the next Spain game as well, and the other two games will most likely involve Germany
