Title: The Game's New Album Might Be His Best [-REVIEWS-]
Post by: TAKEMONEYENT on June 24, 2008, 06:47:10 PM
The Game, his baby mama, Cool & Dre, and what had to be all of Compton, gathered at Santa Monica’s Thom Thom Club yesterday for a preview of his third studio release LAX, which is now pushed back to an August 28 release date.

With secret service-like security manning the entry, anyone blessed to wander beyond the velvet ropes joined a party that played out like a 1996 backyard-boogie.  Plastic cups and dodie smoke filled the room. Black Wall Street soldiers rocked their BWS t-shirts and crowding around the stage in anticipation and reverence of one Jaceyon “The Game” Taylor, who by track one, was on his third Cadillac Margarita speaking reckless yet compassionate at the same time.

“They take this album and put it on the Internet next to Young Buck, niggas cry,” Game said, as he started the intro; a prayer by DMX. “He embraced me, and didn’t know me from Adam, I asked him to do a prayer for me because I need prayer sometimes.”

DMX spits a sincere prayer closing it out repeating, “devil, we rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” From there, one might argue, that indeed prayer does work.

Well thought-out guest appearances from Ice Cube, Lil Wayne and Raquan season the album and classic production by Kanye West and Cool & Dre complete the recipe for a timeless piece of work. Lyrically, showing bipolarity and suicidal thoughts sum up to genius for Game on LAX.

“State of Emergency” featuring Ice Cube, takes the 1995 hit “Ghetto Bird” beat and brilliantly brings life back into a West Coast classic. Showing more love to his hometown on “California Sunshine” featuring Bilal, Game spits; “We can’t find Biggies killer/so we gave Puff a star.”

With the SoundScan buzz in the air, Game explained why he’d chosen Weezy for the superior Cool & Dre produced track “Red Magic.” “The nigga sold a million on his first week out,” Game laughed. “Fa sho I went to get that nigga on my album.” This is by far one of the hottest sets. Heavy bass and that signature Cool & Dre melody, Game uses his full-grown lyricism spitting, “If they get money/we will paper chase them.”

Others featured on the album are Ludacris on “Ya Heard” and Common on the Kanye produced “Angel”, where Game took a minute to dance with his grandmother on stage. The two collaborations show more than growth, the production and lyrics leave promise for an expanded audience outside of the hard-core enthusiasts.

Keeping it current Game says he’s the new Suge Knight, minus the KO on the track “Nice”. He made “Gentleman’s Affair” featuring Neyo for the ladies. “When Ne-Yo come on you gotta go freak yo bitch,” Game said and he pushed his way through the crowd to VIP to dance with his girl.

Controversy, check, hot production, check, but most of all, LAX has quality and is a far more superior listen than the prior two multi-platinum albums under the Game’s belt. It’s just too bad the album has been pushed back once again. LAX does not need another delay.

Also from realtalkny:

RealTalkNY was in the building last night at The Game’s LAX listening session. Thanks Sowmya! Below is a quick recap of what I heard… BTW LAX GOT PUSHED BACK TO AUGUST 26TH…SMH

After security was done acting like pricks… I made it inside and allowed my ears to go to work. Unfortunately, I missed the first 6 tracks, which, other media that were there told me were the best tracks on the album. I missed both lil Wayne tracks and one neyo track SMH… On to the tracks I did hear, I have a recap as it was hard to take notes with so many females around (very unprofessional, I agree) Enjoy the notes below:

1. Touchdown ft. Raheem Devaugh- The song came on and all the girls in the club went crazy. The dance floor was packed and the beat was banging. This might turn out to be that club song that girls be screaming when it comes on…

2. Camera Girl (phone) ft Ne-Yo - This Cool and Dre produced track (they have many tracks on the album) is more of a cool vibe track that you might just have playing in the back ground when a shorty is coming over. Ne-Yo does his thing of course and Game is on point.

3. Never gonna say goodbye - Produced by BWS’ EP - This was my favorite track of the night. This is a song that Game made as if he were in the body of 3 hip hop all of famers 10 minutes before they passed. Game has 3 verses in which he is 2pac, Biggie and Ease-E. I thought it was a creative idea which worked. The beat is also crazy.

4. Money - Yet another Cool and Dre track has that “Miami, rick Ross” feel to it. Game spits that shit on the track as he takes another shot at 50 in the song. This song was interrupted by Steve Berman who hugged Game and they acting like 2 long lost friends. For those that don’t know Steve Berman, pop in any 1 of Eminem’s first 3 albums. (side note: I thought em killed Berman in that last skit… lol)

5. Heaven - Produced by Jelly Roll - This was more of a Game spitting hard on a west coast beat.

6. I aint fucking w/ you ft. Busta Rhymes - Produced by The Trackmasters, this is most definitely the “strip club” joint as described by Game. You should hear this song as your favorite stripper is getting ready for her grand entrance.

7. Game’s Pain - You’ve seen and heard enough of this track…

The rest of the album was cut short due to time restraints and the party headed to another party JD was throwing…

Last note: Cool from Cool and Dre is one of the realest and most humble “industry” people I’ve ever met.

The first review makes it sound great, the 2nd one makes it to be all club/chick tracks and Miami inspired tracks. But I'm sure there will be a good balance in the end.

Rapper surrounds himself with family at a 'listening party' for his newest, the highly anticipated 'LAX.'
By Chris Lee, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
June 25, 2008
For all its booze-soaked bonhomie and head-nodding musical surprises, a "listening party" for "LAX," the new album from the multi-platinum-selling Compton gangsta rapper the Game, on Monday night proved to be the rarest kind of orchestrated media event.

"This is the most 'hood listening party you're ever going to see," said the Game, puffing deeply on an herbal cigarette and clutching what he announced was his fourth Cadillac margarita of the evening. "You can take the boy out of the 'hood, but. . . ."

It was intended as a grand unveiling for one of the most hotly anticipated hip-hop albums of the year -- the first time the Game (given name: Jayceon Taylor) would play his third album (due July 22) for an intimate gathering of hip-hop tastemakers, bloggers, mix-tape DJs and radio programmers from across the country.

But the listening party was an unmistakable victory lap for one of rap's most embattled performers -- a heavily tattooed, gang-affiliated 28-year-old who served an eight-day jail sentence in March for felony possession of a firearm in a school zone and who recently broke down in tears during an interview with hip-hop magazine XXL, admitting to thoughts of suicide.

Perched atop a small stage in Santa Monica's Thom Thom Club on Monday, however, the Game was uncharacteristically all happiness and sunshine. With his grandmother, mother, daughter, sister and aunt in attendance -- as well as at least two dozen thickly muscled young men conspicuously clad in red shirts and hats, the color favored by the Cedar Block Piru Bloods, a street gang with which the rapper proclaims his ties -- he reminisced about his Los Angeles upbringing: shopping at the Fox Hills Mall, getting shot in the heart while dealing crack, releasing his breakthrough album, "The Documentary," with his now-estranged musical mentor Dr. Dre.

"It brings me joy to say that I completed my third album," he said. "I'm from Compton. I remember how it feels to be poor, broke, shot."

And the Game took his moment in the spotlight before introducing his album to give unqualified appreciation to his former nemesis 50 Cent -- a big surprise considering the two rappers' "beef" ranks as one of the most acrimonious feuds in hip-hop history. The Game contrasted his differences with the Queens rapper with the East Coast-West Coast rap feud that ultimately resulted in the murders of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G.

"I ain't got no beef with 50," the Game said. "All that . . . was on wax. I never shot at him, he never shot at me. Both of us done said a lot. But we're not Biggie and Pac. I appreciate homey for helping me on my way up."

From there, gangsta rap started pumping through the speakers. Having by his own estimation spent "every day in 2008 in the studio," the Game corralled an impressive and diverse array of collaborators on "LAX" (its spoken name is "Los Angeles Times" owing to the songs' lyrical content dealing with a uniquely urban Angeleno worldview).

His hero Ice Cube, formerly of the Compton collective NWA, turns up for a duet on the gritty street anthem "California Sunshine," while former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker got behind the kit for the euphoric club banger "The Dope Boys," a song that had radio programming directors and hardened gangbangers alike throwing their hands in the air. Chef Raekwon from Wu-Tang Clan contributes a fiery 32 bars on the densely layered, New York hard-core-inspired "Bulletproof Diaries." And Chicago rapper Common spits streetwise verses on "Angel," an '80s electro-sounding song produced by Kanye West.

Most notably, though, rap's million-plus-selling man, the Louisiana MC Lil Wayne (whose new album “Tha Carter III” topped the national album chart last week), guests on two of the Game's new songs: "Red Magic" and "My Life." Both were produced by hip-hop hit-makers Cool & Dre earlier this month and seem to mark the beginning of a beautiful rap friendship; arguably, no two solo artists have collaborated so fruitfully since Method Man and Red Man teamed for a string of hits in the '90s.

As the night wore on, the get-together took on a woozier tenor. The Game proclaimed from the stage that he was drunk, slurring his words, skewering the members of his rap collective Black Wall Street and even flubbing the name of the president of his record label as he gave him a shout-out from the stage -- he confused Interscope Geffen A&M marketing chief Steve Berman with sportscaster Chris Berman before being corrected.

The Game made amends with the boss by embracing him with a bear hug. "You're the first white man I ever had love for," he exclaimed.

By then, the club was almost empty but for men dressed in red semi-engulfed in a cloud of herbal smoke.

Can't wait for the Ice Cube song that samples "Ghetto Bird".  I love that song from "Lethal Injection".  I always thought that would have been a hit back in 96 if a single would have been released.  Also looking forward to that Common joint.  Common spitting on a Kanye West beat, how can you go wrong?

The Game L.A.X. Listening Session. 6.23.08. LA.
Posted by LC Weber @ 8:30 pm

“I’m here today because Dr. Dre gave me a chance to be somebody,” said The Game when he took the mic at his listening party in Santa Monica. “Who’s Game? It’s me… I’m here, I’m naked, I’m real as shit, I’m rich, I got my album.”

An hour earlier, Game had pulled up to The Thom Thom Club for the first industry listening of his forthcoming L.A.X. album in a midnight Bentley with a crimson logo and matching rims. Through the grandeur of an uber-exclusive list at a door surrounded by secret-service-like security, Game’s entrance was lined with a touch of welcome humility from behind the wheel of his whip. He wasn’t just some Hollywood goods being carted around, Maybach-style.

The air in the club was kinetic with artists and industry stiffs milling about with drinks, and pressing each other, “So, where are you going after this?” With BET Award weekend in full swing, the early portion of the night was a palpable networking web.

Then Game took the stage, and the room fell silent.

“I’m here today because Dr. Dre gave me a chance to be somebody,” he addressed the crowd. “And 50… I appreciate homie. We had our beef, but we both alive. We ain’t no Biggie and Pac.”

Game talked about his early days in the studio with Dre and what it felt like to earn his first $1-million, adding he wished that euphoria was lasting. Now, with two wildly successful albums under his belt in The Documentary and Doctor’s Advocate, Game is preparing for a summer release of L.A.X.

“I don’t care if you don’t like [the album,]” he said. “I spent every day in 2008 working on it. Super Bowl, Finals… I was in the studio.”

With that warning, the DJ launched the record with a rough DMX intro entwined with mournful keys and heavy bass – a throwback heater indicative of what was to come. The next cut, “State Of Emergency,” was tempered-steel synth, featuring Ice Cube on a reminiscent hook “Fuck the 5-0/ They wanna see you D-O-A/ in L.A.” and Game spitting on swap meets, white tees, palm trees, crack heads, Tec-9s and jheri curls. With further tracks titled “ California Sunshine” and “Red Magic” and production from the likes of Jelly Roll, this album is firmly rooted in the West.

Game seemed to deviate from his habit of dropping more names in his lyrics than “the,” “and,” or “it,” but saturated most every song with guest appearances beyond necessity. Along with DMX and Cube, Bilal croons his guts out, Luda assists on a Southern gem, and Weezy appears twice – once with a verse, once with his Auto-tuner. And that’s just at the top of the album.

The chief reason all the featured artists felt like overkill was because Game raps on this record like his life depends on it. He’s spitting so hard he doesn’t need all the extras and, indeed, they seem to weaken him in their lack of continuity.

Of course, it’s hard to judge an album on one spin in a crowded lounge, but L.A.X. appeared to be thick with screw-face magma, yet in danger of riding a single note. One thing is clear though – Game is staying completely true to himself, both as an artist and as a man.

“I always try and keep it 100 – I’m not like these other rappers,” he said. “Other people go to the BET Awards, I watch the BET Awards. I’m from Compton. I been shot. I taught my sons to walk… the only thing that matters to me are my sons, my momma, my girl and my PS3.”

L.A.X. will be releasing on 8.26.08.
