Title: Sun Yue, "The Chinese Magic Johnson", to be on Laker Roster next season?
Post by: Now_Im_Not_Banned on June 27, 2008, 03:11:13 PM
Everybody Loves Sun Yue (http://thelakersnation.com/blog/2008/06/27/everybody-loves-sun-yue/)

Published by The Nugget on June 27, 2008 in 2008 Off-Season.

If some of you don’t know me, I really want to see Yue in a Lakers uniform next season. Why? ‘Cause most analyst are comparing him to Magic Johnson, thats why! Well, the asian Magic Johnson, to be exact. So whose with me?! Sound-off… Do it, Mitch!

They are also keeping tabs on 6-foot-8 Chinese guard Sun Yue, whom they took last year with the 40th pick.

“We’re very optimistic that we can get him on the roster next year,” Kupchak said. “I’ll contact his agent this week and have some initial discussions.”

I was pretty hyped about this guy last year...hope he's as good as he looks.

I hope this tunes out to be true. I want to see if he's the real deal or the same old "has potential" second rounder.

To be honest , no thanks .. another skinny dude which is gonna be eaten alive on the D end in the NBA .. I'm tired of the Lakers organization always thinking about offense .. last time I checked Defense was still winning championship .. we need a solid Defender at the 3 ... is it so difficult to understand ?

I like this guy. He seems to have potential.

To wcsoldier: Ray Allen was never been a defensive stopper. But he defended in an amazing way against Kobe in the Finals. What i mean is that Phil is the responsable for team defence. And he's the guy who should tell his people that they have to start defending better if they want to win a title. Have you seen Cassell? Damn, he was defending great too, against Kobe. And he's not known for being a defensive specialist. What we need is a PJ Brown type of veteran to sign with the MLE. And another big man who can try to defend one on one against players like KG, Duncan, etc.. I wouldn't mind Kwame Brown, at this point. I mean at least he could defend one on one. Bynum+Kwame should be enought. And Gasol+Turiaf too (the dream is to get Gasol's brother too). Plus we should get ridd of players like Radmanovic and (sorry man, i used to like you) Luke Walton. They ain't worth shit. They don't defend, they don't attack the basket. All they do is to make jumpshots. But fuck it, if you want to have a 3pter specialist in your team at least select one who can defend too (like Bowen, Posey, Battier, etc..). Last but not least, like i said it's Phil who should start caring more about defence.

Yea, obiously, he's no where near Magics level...it's just his nickname in China because of his point guard abilities at 6'9"

Well.. during the 2006/07 season he shot 48/124 from 3pts. That means .387, which is pretty impressive. Check those stats:

3pts made per game. He was the 2nd Laker guy in that stat, averaging 1.3 3pter made per game. Second only to Kobe.

He can def shoot from 3pts, man. He's not a specialist like Vujacic and Radmanovic, but he can shoot. Last season he was just so bad that he couldn't even do that. But Luke can shot, when he's ok. The problem is that if he doesn't even do that, he's useless.

Yeah, you're right. 0.8
Anyway yeah, he played horrible last season.
And he can't defend.
So it doesn't change the sense of what i wrote.
We should get rid of him.

Oh, no doubt...when Luke is on, he can shoot the ball. It's just that he never really found his stroke last season. Trust me, I'm really hoping he'll bounce back...I'm just saying, the last I saw of Luke was something I don't wanna see again.

The Lakers have Trevor Ariza to play defense at SF. The Lakers just need to trade or bench Walton or Radmanovic.

Nobody is comparing his ability to Magic's, his nickname IN CHINA is simply "The Chinese Magic Johnson" because he's the first legit 6'9" point guard since Magic.

So the only thing you have to do to be dubbed the next Magic Johnson is be a 6'9 PG.  Fucking Brilliant.              Magic's Legacy :monkey_piss:

I'm going to refer to Yao as the Chinese Wilt Chamberlain.

Nobody said he's the next Magic Johnson...what don't you get about that? His NICKNAME is "The Chinese Magic Johnson"...Refer to Yao as whatever the fuck you want.

LMFAO.  You clowns have no pride calling this guy the Chinese Magic Johnson. Pure hype.  Magic's legacy has just been bastardized.  You guys should be outraged by that label.

What don't you get about how fucking retarded it is to name some one Magic Johnson because he is the same height and plays the same position?  Is that all Magic is to you, a 6'9 PG?  You're a disgrace to real Laker fans.

The Lakers want Yue
Sun Yue remained in China after being drafted by the Lakers in 2007 but the 6-9 point guard is still on their radar. (http://www.ocregister.com/articles/draft-lakers-aba-2086975-foot-point)

The Orange County Register

The Lakers have plenty to do in the coming weeks what with free agency, draft picks and the summer league starting.

Yet in addition to re-signing Sasha Vujacic and Ronny Turiaf, watching newly drafted rookie Joe Crawford participate in Las Vegas, and keeping an eye on trades and free agents, the Lakers are hoping to sign Sun Yue.

Who is Sun Yue?

The 6-foot-9 point guard was the Lakers' second-round draft pick last year, but he stayed overseas, where will play on the Chinese national team this summer.

"He's a player that we are intrigued in," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said at the draft. "We think he has the talent to play at the NBA level."

Sun caught the attention of NBA execs because of his height for a point guard and his passing skills. At the Orlando NBA Pre-Draft camp a year ago, he measured a 34-inch vertical jump, a 6-foot-9 wingspan, an 8-foot-9 standing reach and is ranked among the top three in lane agility.

Sun, compared at times to Boris Diaw, possesses 3-point range on his jumpshot and uses a number of crossovers and between-the-leg dribbles to get separation from his defender.

His size also can create matchup headaches for opponents.

In 2006-07, he averaged 13.5 points, 10.5 assists and six rebounds for Beijing Aoshen of the ABA, earning first-team All-ABA honors.

The previous season, he scored in double figures 13 times while playing in the ABA, scoring a season-high 22 points against the Orange County Buzz and posted a triple double against the Los Angeles Aftershock.
