Title: Is Lehman the worst goalkeeper that ever played in a final?
Post by: smegma on June 30, 2008, 05:01:50 AM
I mean... he was directly responsible for Turkey's two goals... he didn't totally go free off against Torres... and yeah... for a goalie that plays in a national team he was abominable throughout the entire tournament.

I'm not really defending Lehmann, but I'm sure there are have been worse keepers in the final.

Lehmann played a bad tournament, but he's getting too much shit right now. He didn't look good, but the goal was mainly Lahm's fault, cause he just let Torres run past him. If Lehmann had stayed in his goal, it would still have been a huge opportunity for Torres, so he really doesn't have to take all the blame. Plus Lehmann made some great saves yesterday, so I really don't see how people keep acting as if he was outstandingly bad in this weak German team we saw yesterday.

The unreliability of Lahm as a defender and the clumsiness of Metzelder and Mertesacker are somehow often overlooked when Lehmann's being bashed. It's not just him. This German defense is not European top-class shit, 4 out of 6 opponents scored against them, 7 goals in 6 games total and the ones that failed to score are Poland and Austria. That's a bigger problem, acting as if only Lehmann were responsible is unfair and incorrect. And I do think Lehmann's a jerk...

This, for example, was a final goal for which the keeper was mostly responsible; worse than Lehmann yesterday:

Exactly. I said the same thing....

I cant believe the stick Lehmann is taking, yes he was PARTLY to blame for the goal (IMO Lahm should have been a lot stronger) but did no1 else see the 3 or 4 quality saves Lehmann made throughout the rest of the game? And this is coming from someone who fucking HATES Lehmann with a passion, but you cant blame him tonight. IMO Frings has lost it, Neither Podolski or Klose turned up 2nite, subbing a defender 4 a defender at half time is NOT a positve move....Oh and Spain could bring on the top scorer in La Liga and 2 other good players (Xabi Alonso and Cazzolo (Sp?) where as Ze Germans brung on an ineffectual Kuranyi and fuckin Gomez, that was the difference, not the Keeper.

Congrats Spain.

i hate lehman but clearly not, david james played in the fa cup final back in the 90's when he could barely co ordinate his arms let alone catch a ball.

Well, Lehmann was not  the worst keeper in a final, but he has been the worst GERMAN goalkeeper in a major touranment ever
Moreover, I agree with everythin Kill said > the goal was mainly lahms fault, Metzelder and Mertesacker played a shitty tournament too. But still, no mercy for Lehmann

Thread title says "a final," so no, Lehman isn't.

the difference though is Oliver Khan was one of the main reason they we're in the finals...and he was probably the best keeper if not, he was up there in that 2002 world cup....

Lehman wasn't shit this tournament, and he was not the reason they got to the finals, but he is still good.

true, it's just that Kahn fucked up in the final a lot worse than Lehmann just did
