Title: Mavs make offer for Artest
Post by: 7even on July 17, 2008, 08:38:07 AM
Always looking to improve, the Dallas Mavericks has reportedly throwing their hat into the Ron Artest chase. According to HoopsWorld's Bill Ingram and verified by Sam Amick of the Sacramento Bee, the Mavericks are apparently offering Brandon Bass and the expiring contract of Jerry Stackhouse for Artest. The Sacramento Kings are in a difficult position in that they don't want to have a disgruntled Artest in training camp - but the more he publicly demands a trade, the more challenging it could be for the Kings to get fair value. Bass is a promising young big man (in a 6'8" body) but far from an All-Star. At the deadline the Denver Nuggets considered sending Linas Kleiza but never pulled the trigger on a deal. Artest's market value appears to be that of an unproven but talented player with positive upside. HoopsWorld

A source who would know shared some scenario with HoopsWorld today, basically saying there is a lot of interest in Artest. The Dallas Mavericks are offering basically the same thing they did last year - Brandon Bass and Jerry Stackhouse for Ron-Ron. Rick Carlisle would love to have Ron back in his locker room, but he's not willing to part with Josh Howard to get it done. That likely means the Mavs don't have a deal. Stackhouse is a great locker room guy and probably a future coach, but his health is a huge concern. Brandon Bass has huge upside and was an important part of the Mavs' success last season, especially before the Kidd trade. But is he worth Artest? Maybe not. HoopsWorld

The chatter was first reported by Hoopsworld here, but I've independently confirmed the pieces in the offer. Stackhouse has a contract that's almost identical to Artest's ($7.4 million, expiring for Artest; $7 million expiring for Stackhouse), and Bass is a young beast of a big man who comes at the bargain price of $826,269 (also expiring). I can't even come close to seeing Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie doing this deal, not unless Josh Howard is involved. Sacramento Bee

And from what I'm told, that's not going to happen. As the Mavs see it, the perceived risk of taking Artest is acceptable so long as the price of getting him is Bass and Stackhouse. Lose Howard to get Artest, though, and the gamble is too great.
As is always the case, though, things could change. Sacramento Bee

And Artest already clashed with Carlisle in Indy,  but anyways this would never work because the Kings dont with this crap that the Mavs are offering.

At this point I really don't see any individual player saving the Mavs (unless by some miracle they got Kobe and were able to keep Dirk). Nowitzki just doesn't have that passion to win and would be better suited as a 2nd option.

Agreed...He's a Gasol type of player. If he gets traded to a good team, he'll make them great. But he needs someone to lead him.

That doesn't seem like such a bad move to me. Addition by subtraction and you add Bass. The main problem for the Kings is they dont get out of Thomas' contract.

Isaiah Thomas got fired, remember? Not many teams are willing to accept the risk that comes with adding a nutjob to their roster these days.

Agreed, I believe they should (and probably will) get more than that for Artest....but let's not forget that Marcus Camby, although not on the same level as Artest, just got traded for a 2nd round pic lol................so I guess I'm saying anything can happen.

Source: Dallas Mavericks say no to Artest-for-Josh Howard offer

10:45 AM CDT on Friday, July 18, 2008

The Sacramento Kings have expressed interest in acquiring Dallas Mavericks forward/guard Josh Howard in a trade for All-Star forward Ron Artest, but the Mavericks aren't interested, according to an NBA source.

The Mavericks reportedly were willing to offer forward Brandon Bass and guard Jerry Stackhouse for Artest. But the Kings wanted Howard included in the deal, halting the discussions.

Because the Mavericks won't budge on Howard, a potential trade for Artest is all but dead, the source said.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban declined comment in an e-mail to The Dallas Morning News.

A deal for Artest would have given the Mavericks an All-Star caliber starter at every position except center and reunited Artest with head coach Rick Carlisle, who coached Artest when he played for the Indiana Pacers.

Trade rumors have swirled about Artest this summer. The Kings and Los Angeles Lakers were reportedly in talks about an Artest-for-Lamar Odom swap, but that has since fizzled. The San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns also have shown interest.

Artest, 28, is one of the top defensive players in the NBA and has averaged 16 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game over his nine-year career. Artest has career playoff averages of 17.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Artest (6-7, 248) is with his third NBA team but doesn't seem to be slowing. He averaged a career-best 20.5 points per game last season with the Kings.

Bass and Stackhouse for Artest would have been almost a wash in terms of salaries. Artest is set to make $7.4 million next season. Stackhouse will earn $7 million next season and Bass $826,269.

Stackhouse, 33, averaged a career-low 10.7 points per game last season, his 13th in the NBA. The 23-year-old Bass, however, set career-highs by averaging 8.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game last season, his third. Bass (6-8, 240) spent his first two seasons with the New Orleans Hornets.

Howard, 28, averaged a career-best 19.9 points and seven rebounds per game last season, his fifth. He was All-Star in 2007 and will earn $9.945 million next season.

Howard, 6-5, had a rocky finish last season. He went on a local radio show and discussed his off-season marijuana use during the Mavericks' playoff series against the New Orleans Hornets. And after a playoff loss, he passed out fliers in the locker room inviting teammates to celebrate his birthday at a Dallas nightclub.

But despite Howard's off-court antics in late April, the Mavericks don't seem willing to deal the versatile swingman. At least not yet.

The last thing the Mavs need is to trade Brendon Bass too. LOL.
