Title: Can Spurs be north London's finest?
Post by: Elano on August 04, 2008, 10:06:16 PM
Glancing up at a photograph of Tottenham Hotspur’s Carling Cup-winning team in a Moscow casino on Saturday afternoon, the scale of Juande Ramos’s rebuilding operation suddenly became clear. The picture looked a perfect advert for an auction, because working down the line of beaming faces in the Wembley sunshine, the prevailing thought was “going, going, gone”.

After cleverly condemning everything he inherited at White Hart Lane, from the goalkeepers to the catering staff, Ramos will stand or fall on his own terms this season. The Tottenham head coach seems to be Spain’s answer to Harry Redknapp, buying and selling a total of 20 players since taking over from Martin Jol last November, and can no longer blame his predecessor if results do not go his way, as they failed to do for the bulk of last season, with the exception of that win over Chelsea.

Despite winning two Uefa Cups with Seville, opinion remains divided on Ramos in his homeland, where cynics claim that anyone could have led that multitalented team to silverware. Most of the side who played some of the best football in La Liga before finishing third to Real Madrid in 2006-07 were taken to the club by Ramón Rodriguez Verdejo, the sporting director, rather than Ramos, so he is not used to being judged on his own decisions.

As usual, Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, has backed his head coach in the transfer market this summer, but unlike in the past, it is Ramos doing the buying, rather than Damien Comolli, the sporting director. The 53-year-old has no hiding place.

The contrast with Arsenal could not be greater, with Arsène Wenger limiting himself to three new signings after letting three players go this summer, but Tottenham will probably have to finish above them if they are to achieve their goal of Champions League qualification. Could this finally be the year in which they overhaul their neighbours?

Such bold predictions were being made on behalf of Jol’s side 12 months ago, only for his position to be made untenable within weeks by the board’s scheming. The Dutchman came within one suspect lasagne of achieving his goal two years ago, but, given the changes that Ramos has made to the players’ canteen, the Spaniard will be unable to blame dodgy doughnuts if he comes up short.

i remeber last summer everyone thought spurs were gonna be top four because of henry leaving arsenal and the demise which would follow.

Anyway, i cant see them making it in to the top four because they lack a real good defensive midfielder and wide players.

With the players they've got now, no I'm afraid. Too unorganized at the back, especially from set pieces, and now they have lost defoe and keane in the last year, they have no real goal scorers.
