The Memphis Grizzlies have signed restricted Atlanta free agent Josh Smith to a $58 million offer sheet, the Memphis Commercial-Appeal is reporting.
The Hawks now have seven days to match or let Smith walk, but have said in the past they'll match any offer the high flyer may get from rival teams.
Should the Griz land Smith he is expected to play power forward alongside Rudy Gay at small forward, O.J. Mayo at shooting guard and Mike Conley at point guard.
Damn that would make the Grizzlies the most athletic team in the league. But I don't see the point in having Josh Smith AND Rudy Gay (nor do I see J.Smoov surviving at the 4 in the West).

damn this would screw over atlanta

^^^ATL will match.

yeah he can, hes athletic anough. Rudy is a 2 play Josh at the 3 or 4..that would be great for the Grizz..WTF are the Hawks doing. Such a nice future, but they gotta KEEP SMITH

They will match.. $58 mill for 5 years is not that much for a player of Smith's caliber. If Atlanta doesn't match, they're crazy. Grizzlies would also have a crazy athletic running squad.
PG Mike Conley...Kyle Lowry/Darrell Arthur
SG OJ Mayo...Javaris Crittenton/Marko Jaric
SF Rudy Gay...Antoine Walker/Greg Buckner
PF Josh Smith...Hakim Warrick
C Marc Gasol...Darko Milicic
That will outdo that Hawks of last year...

Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith has signed a five-year, $58 million offer sheet with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.
Smith
The Hawks will have seven days to match the offer, which the report said came unexpectedly from the Grizzlies.
Atlanta has said it would match any offer for the 6-foot-9, 235-pound forward, despite offseason overtures from the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers, neither of which panned out.
Smith quickly took advantage of his restricted free-agent status, spending July 2 visiting the 76ers, a day after teams could start negotiations with free agents.
The 22-year-old Smith toured the city and visited the Wachovia Center with team officials.
But the 76ers opted to sign restricted free-agent Elton Brand, and the Clippers made a trade with the Denver Nuggets for Marcus Camby.
Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. said shortly after the season he was committed to keeping Smith.
Smith's numbers have increased in each of his four NBA seasons since Atlanta made him a first-round pick out of high school in 2004. He averaged 17.2 points and 8.2 rebounds last year and helped the Hawks make the playoffs

I'm still interested in seeing if we're the Western Conference team who could possibly get him in a sign-n-trade.

Hawks match Grizzlies’ offer sheet for Josh Smith
ATLANTA (AP)—Josh Smith will remain with the Hawks after Atlanta quickly matched an offer sheet from the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.
“Tonight, the Hawks organization received an offer sheet from the Memphis Grizzlies for Josh Smith,” Atlanta general manager Rick Sund said in a statement. “We are happy to announce that we will match their offer sheet.
“Ownership, management and the team are happy to have Josh return as a member of the Hawks.”
Terms were not immediately disclosed.
The Grizzlies announced earlier in the day that Smith, a restricted free agent, had signed the offer sheet. The Hawks had seven days to match the offer.
The Hawks drafted the 6-foot-9, 235-pound Smith out of high school in the first round in 2004.
Smith averaged 17.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in helping the Hawks make the playoffs last season.
