The Lakers and point guard Sun Yue have agreed to terms on a two-season contract, the team confirmed Thursday. The Lakers hope to sign Sun formally within the next few days, team spokesman John Black said.
"Hopefully, it will get done soon," Black said.
Sun, known as the Chinese Magic Johnson because of his eye-catching playmaking ability, will face his future teammate Kobe Bryant when China plays the United States on Sunday in the Olympic Games opener in Beijing.
The Lakers drafted the 6-foot-9, 212-pound Sun in the second round in 2007. He spent last season with Aoshen, his Beijing club team, and also played with the Chinese National team in preparation for the Olympics.
In addition, he played with China in the Las Vegas Summer League in 2007.
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said in June that he would make it a priority to sign Sun and bring him to training camp.
Sun's signing gives the Lakers increased depth in the backcourt heading into camp. He will compete with starting point guard Derek Fisher and backup Jordan Farmar for playing time. He also can play shooting guard.
The Lakers have yet to re-sign free agent guard Coby Karl. They also haven't signed Joe Crawford, a guard from Kentucky who was their lone draft pick in June. Last week they did sign guard Dwayne Mitchell, a free agent from Louisiana-Lafayette.
What's more, Kupchak said last month that he would wait a while before deciding
whether to give an $80-million, five-season contract extension to center Andrew Bynum. Kupchak would like to see how Bynum responds to his offseason workouts.
Bynum suffered a season-ended left kneecap injury Jan. 13. He underwent surgery in June and is on pace for a full recovery in time for training camp in October.
Clippers sign Williams: The Clippers acquired still another player during their busy offseason, signing free-agent point guard Jason Williams. The 32-year-old Williams averaged 8.8 points, 4.6 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 28 minutes in 67 appearances last season with the Miami Heat.
"We are excited to add Jason to our squad," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said in a statement. "He brings added veteran leadership and playoff experience to our backcourt."
Williams is a veteran of 10 NBA seasons, the past three with the Heat. He played for their 2006 championship team.
In 679 regular-season games, he has averaged 11.4 points, 6.3 assists and 2.4 rebounds while playing for three different teams.

Nice...lets hope he makes the final roster. Would be a nice 3rd string point guard and could develop into a 6th man typa player when Fisher leaves.

dude will be playing the 2 spot, so he could get some playing time now that Sasha is gone. Kobe usually goes down to 3 anyways when the Lakers go small, so he could get some good minutes.

Uhhh, cuz it's hilarious. Dude is a Laker fan and he didn't know Sasha was resigned to a 3 year deal almost a month ago. That's like a Phoenix Suns fan saying "I hope D'Antoni draws up some better plays next year!"...would laughing at that hurt your feelings or something? Man up.

Sun Yue looked pretty nice for China today...especially that block on Melo. :o

First of all bad example, you cant compare a Head Coach to a role player. And secondly my feelings aren't hurt. I just wanted to call you out for being a arrogant little prick. Not everyone stays home and prays to our kobe posters

I thought we established that it pisses on Magic's legacy to keep referring to this kid as the Chinese Magic.

stop acting like a butthurt lil faggot...real men don't get offended by shit like that. It's pretty funny to be a Laker fan and think that Sasha signed somewhere other than LA. i'm sure mdogg didn't catch any feelings over me thinking that was funny. calm your ass down and go pick on something else...like crops.

I just take it for what it is I guess. I thought Sasha signed with another team, mainly because I can check Lakers news all I want, in the offseason I check on the Angels more, and a Sasha signing isn't exactly going to be on MN evening news.

Dude is good in China but I don't seem him making it in the NBA.
-
Looks like Kobe already welcomed him to the team...

dude has game that's for sure. but it seems like everyone does in international play, so we'll see what happens once he steps onto the an NBA court.
-
NBA is completely different. In international play, it seems more physical, and more based off passes and skills. You can't really move your feet once the ball is in hand, causing US players to get called for traveling more, and what not. In the US play, there is more rules built for offense, so you see a faster, more athletic game. The NBA was more for athletes, so it will take so adjustment for Yue, but hopefully it's worth the take.

A 6'9" point guard with great handles, excellent passing ability, and a nice stroke who blocked Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard in the same game wont make it in tha NBA? Dude was the most consistent player on China's national team (which includes Yao Ming, Wang ZhiZhi, and Yi Jianlian), so there's no doubt he's gunna make some noise when he gets here...
