convert it to a .m4r
use something like garageband if you're on osx, or you can do it on the apple itunes store for like $1.99 or whatever it is

Pick your 30 seconds for the ringtone.
Once you set the parameters, convert the song to AAC (M4a).
Look for the song in your library and change the extension to M4r.
This only applies to music you added on to your iTunes. Not purchased music.

i got a mp3 song... converted it to AAC.. then renamed it to .m4r and then added it to my itunes library... and it comes up in the library under Ringtones and then i dragged this ringtone into my iPhone in itunes.... and i syncronized....and it says it is on itunes that the ringtone is coppied to the iPhone. now when i go to my phone and go to settings>sounds>ringtones> it is not there.... just the standard gay ass ringtones.... any help?

i just have like 5 ringtones as i dont use them... im using a regular sounding cell phone tone.

Sure:
Open iTunes
1.) Select Edit> Preferences. Select the Advanced tab and select the importing tab. Switch the "import using" from mp3 to AAC. Hit OK.
2.) Find the song you want to use as a ringtone.
3.) Right click on the song and hit "Get Info".
4.) Select the "Options" tab and change the start and end time to wherever the part you want starts and ends (no more than 30 sec).
5.) Hit OK.
6.) Right click again and hit "Convert Selection to AAC". A new song will appear but it will be the shortened version.
7.) Once it completes, locate the newly made song in your music folder.
8.) Change the file extension to m4r.
9.) A pop-up will appear and say something like changing the extension might cause the file to not work. Hit OK.
10.) Go back to iTunes, and select the Ringtones tab from the side bar. The ringtones library will appear.
11.) Drag the m4r file into the ringtones library.
There might be an easier way but this is the only way I know of.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more help.
