If you use someone else material for music on youtube/myspace or for mixtapes and you never profit any money off of it, can you still be sued. Can anyone explain how all that works?

In theory yes, but I doubt an artist will waste their money to sue you.

Yes, It's a public performance royalty you owe them. ASCAP/BMI and all the other publishing houses sue you for that, not the artists though.
