Title: Can you all just humor me and talk about the Chiefs for once?
Post by: TraceOneInfinite on September 03, 2008, 09:46:01 PM
I know they suck, and you all like to talk about big market teams like California and New York teams.... but I just want to hear what you guys think about the Chiefs this year, what you expect from their team and players this year... what you think of GM Carl Peterson, Coach Herm, Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, players like Brodie Croyle, Damon Huard, Larry Johnson, Dwayne Bowe, their rookies, etc.... so post anything because I would like to read.

I don't think Herm is a good coach.  I think he destroyed LJ.  I don't see the Chiefs doing much of anything this year.

I don't think Herm is a good coach.  I think he destroyed LJ.  I don't see the Chiefs doing much of anything this year.

agreed.  Herm lives by what he calls the "Buck Ball" philosophy, which I think comes from when he was a coordinator in Tampa Bay.  Basically, it means his favorite way to win against a superior opponent  is to pound it out with the running game, use up clock time, play solid defense... keep the game close and then win at the end.

The problem with this is that he really believes in it.  He thinks you don't need a superior team to win in the NFL.  He doesn't even think you need a decent quarterback to win in the NFL.  He thinks you can play "Buck Ball" and go to the playoffs and possibly win the Superbowl.

So in regards to Larry, they give it to Larry on almost every play and he got so beat up in his two years with Herm, the offensive line was horrible and we had ZERO threat of a passing game, especially now with Brodie Croyle out there.

So Larry gets unfairly blamed, and he was on some freestyle track dissin GM Carl Peterson that leaked to the web, lol.. so they associate him with rap music and they think he's a thug in Kansas City... lol... so now Larry's the bad guy.

lol

I think the Chiefs are going to be one of the worst football teams this year; likely in then top 3. Herm is not a good coach. The team is filled with "filler" players. Some talent (Bowe) but not enough. 3-5 wins this year.

not smart... I hope you didn't draft these guys very early.  Bowe is awesome but Brodie only knows how to throw roll outs to the tight ends and screen passes to running backs.  Throwing downfield is asking too much from a Herm Edwards led offense.

Herm Edwards on the New England Patriots

On the New England Patriots:

“They’re a very balanced team, never panic and just play their game. They never worry about the opponent. They have a way they’re going to run their offense and certain things they’re going to do on defense. They play special teams a certain way and it really doesn’t matter who the opponent is. They’re a very confident football team.”

On quarterback Tom Brady:

“They were a little bit different when he was a young quarterback. They didn’t put a lot on his plate. As he evolved and matured they opened the offense up for him. Really, now they put it in his hands. They can throw whenever they want. They can run the ball, so it’s all evolved around him.”

On beginning the season with such a tough opponent:

“Eventually you have to play them all. Your schedule is your schedule, and they were going to be on the schedule because of the way it shook out. Whether you get them first game, last game, middle of the season you have to play them. It just happens to be the first and on the road.”

On Chiefs rookie left tackle Branden Albert:

“He’s good to go. He’s working. He’s excited. Big smile on his face. Big smile on everybody’s face. He’s just another young one who’s going to have to play. That’s OK. That’s what we said we were going to do and good for us because we stuck to our guns through this whole process. Now it’s time to go play and you can’t all of a sudden when it’s time start questioning what you’re doing. We have a certain way we do things around here now and I think it’s good for the organization. We will reap the benefits. It all starts somewhere, and it starts this year with the direction we’re headed.”

On changing the routine for a young team instead of a veteran team:

“I think you have to spend more time in the classroom with these guys. You have to have more patience. You can’t give them too much too early. I think you have to make things very simple for them so they can use their talents and the gifts we liked when we drafted them. You don’t want to hinder them with a thought process of thinking too much. And you need to do it over and over until they feel comfortable. Once they feel comfortable you can add some things.”

On having doubts rebuilding the Chiefs was the best plan:

“It’s like being in a card game and then you go, ‘I’ve got some bad cards, and I’ve got to throw them in.’ You’ve got to play them. You can’t throw your hand in. You’ve got to play. I think if we’re going to be truthful with ourselves, we’ve got to do it.”

Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 9/1
Sep 01, 2008, 9:54:15 AM

Highlights

HERM EDWARDS: “The roster is set for today but it’s always changing. If you look at our roster out of the 53-man I think there are 22 new Chiefs -15 of those guys are rookies. That’s good for us. That’s the direction we want to head. Now, we’ve got to get them ready to play. In our opinion, as we go and as these guys mature they’re going to get a lot better and this is the future of our football team.

“I know the players are excited, especially after the last cut. I hope that some of the guys we left go will land somewhere. But it’s never over in this league the first week or two always is a moving target.”

Q: Even though it’s the direction you wanted to go, is it surprising that all 12 of this year’s draft choices are still with the organization?

EDWARDS: “When you look at it, right now in the last three draft classes there are actually 19 who are still here -11 of those guys are starting for us and out of those 19, 15 are playing a lot That’s what we wanted to do. Now, it’s just a matter of them gaining confidence every time they play and winning football games.”

Q: How confident are you that Branden Albert, should be active this week, can compensate for the lack of practice time he’s had?

EDWARDS: “Well, no one knows. No one is going to know how he is going to react. We’ll see. We don’t know about how a lot of these guys are going to react in a real game. But that’s part of it. They’re playing an excellent football team as you guys know, so it’s probably the best way for us to start because you get a barometer right now of where you’re at. There’s no guessing. When the game’s over you can look at your football team and go, ‘OK, here’s where we’re at.’”

Q: Can you think what it must be like for New England to want to purge the taste of losing their only game last year?

EDWARDS: “I don’t know. I can’t talk for those guys, for their team. I won’t even try.”

Q: But to put it another way, you’ve had playoff losses and it carries over a little bit doesn’t it?

EDWARDS: “It does but I think every season you start anew and you never know what to expect when the season starts. Everyone has high expectations, most teams do. Then when the season gets going it’s how you deal with setbacks, things that happen to you, whether it be the loss of players or a tough loss – how do you react. The good teams with the tough-minded guys react in positive ways.

“There are a lot of different opinions about what teams are going to be in the Super Bowl, what teams are going to be in the playoffs. That’s what people get paid to do. But you as a football team have to focus on what your expectations are. Those are ones inside your locker room and inside these walls. The players have to realize that.”

Q: What state of mind would you expect the Patriots to be in?

EDWARDS: “I don’t know. I’ve got my puppies I’m taking up there. I’ve got to make sure they’re on the plane on time.”

Q: Can you go over some of your injured guys and what their status might be?

EDWARDS: “I’m not going to talk about it because I don’t have to. Today’s Monday. I’m not going to give anybody any ammunition.”

Q: What about BJ Sams?

EDWARDS: “BJ Sams was at practice today.”

Q: Branden Albert?

EDWARDS: “Branden was at practice. They were all in their shorts and jerseys and running around. You guys got to realize that I’ve got a job to do. You’ve got a job to do. I’ve got to protect this football team and I’m not going to give information out that I don’t have to give. It’s not fair.”

Q: We heard at the kickoff luncheon references to 8-8 and next year, but you came out and said we’re here to win now. Can you talk about that mindset and do you have to talk to your team about that?

EDWARDS: “I think sometimes we lose sight of what this thing’s all about and all the hours and things you go through to prepare yourself for the season. You’re not preparing yourself to just play. You’re trying to prepare your team to win. You have 16 opportunities and I think every time you play that’s got to be your mindset. That’s always been my mindset as a player and coach ever since I’ve been in this league. Every time you compete you’re trying to win whether it’s marbles, cars, whatever you do, golf.

“When you’re in a competitive environment you try to win. That’s what it’s about: about competing and it never changes. I was taught that growing up. You try to outdo the other guy or the other team. I don’t think you can look at it another way. When you do you take the joy out of competition.”

Q: Did you have a practice today?

EDWARDS: “We had a walk-through. We just walk-throughed.”

Q: Why did you give the team so much time off?

EDWARDS: “What, two days? Two days. We came in Friday and gave them Saturday and Sunday off.”

Q: Well, did you get enough work?

EDWARDS: “Yeah. You can’t over-practice. You’ve only got 60 guys. What are you going to do: practice every day and then go play Sunday and they’re worn out? No team does that. No coach ever does that. You bring them in for meetings and walk-throughs but the teams aren’t going to practice, not with eight days. You’re not going to do that with 60 guys. I’ve never done that. You bring them in on Monday and they have a little bit of a practice like we did last year. We give them Tuesday off. We brought ‘em in this year on Friday, they moved around a bit and then we let them go with two days off. Then we brought them back today, Monday, and then we’ll bring them back Tuesday. Most teams have Tuesday off.”

Q: Your first couple of season openers here you weren’t really competitive. The quality of the team you’re playing this year notwithstanding, do you feel better about your ability coming out of camp to do some good things this time?

EDWARDS: “We were trying the last two years really to be quite honest.”

Q: I’m not asking if you were trying. Do you feel better about your ability to do it?

EDWARDS: “I felt good about our ability to do it the last two years. You never go into a game thinking we can’t do it. I don’t understand the question.”

Q: We talked the last couple of years coming out of camp that things weren’t fitting together real well.

EDWARDS: “We had some guys injured.”

Q: Do you feel better about your ability to do some good things this year?

EDWARDS: “Yeah, but I think when you look at it the only thing different from the last two years is we’re much younger. We got a whole new offense. The defense is pretty much the same but there are a bunch of new characters over there starting for us. I think these guys have put in a lot of work and we’re excited about playing.”

Q: Taking such a young team to start their careers against a veteran team on the road that has had so much success and is expected to do well again, is that the best way for this young team to start as opposed to going someplace where the expectations are not as great?

EDWARDS: “I do think this is among the cream of the crop of teams in the league. It’s a good barometer. You go in there and go compete and go play. Our intentions are to win the game and you find out at the end who wins and who loses. But you are going to get something out of it either way. I think you’re going to find out a lot about your team, where you’re at, and that’s good. Every coach wants to know. The earlier you know the better. When you play a good team you have to play well to win and we’re going to have to play really, really good to win. There is no doubt about it. We’ve talked about it. You can’t have errors against these guys or take a play off.”

Q: No matter how you practice or scrimmage can you know what you’ve got until you played right?

EDWARDS: “You don’t know the anxiety guys are going to have. It’s different from the pre-season to the regular season. It always has been. They’ve got to survive the first five to six minutes of the game. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot and in the first five or six minutes the game is out of hand. You don’t want that to happen. We’re going to go find out.”

Q: Was it Novak’s experience that gave him the edge over Barth in the kicking battle?

EDWARDS: “That had something to do with it, but I just think when you looked at it we just felt he had a little more pop on the ball when he kicked it. When you talk about kicking outside in the cold we just felt like he had a little bit stronger leg. But I think both those kids did a great job. They went through a lot for one to earn a job. It was a hard decision, very difficult.”
______

Q: What state of mind would you expect the Patriots to be in?

EDWARDS: “I don’t know. I’ve got my puppies I’m taking up there. I’ve got to make sure they’re on the plane on time.

Is Herm preparing for a defeat already?

Q: We heard at the kickoff luncheon references to 8-8 and next year, but you came out and said we’re here to win now. Can you talk about that mindset and do you have to talk to your team about that?

The Chiefs are a LONG WAY away from being anywhere near contention..Herm just came to KC at the wrong time, he came at the end of that Great O-line and offense..I still don't think hes a very good head coach, but we'll really see how good he is this year, how does he get these guys to play? That will tell alot. And what were the Cheifs thinking letting there BEST Defensive player get away? I don't get that at all..They do have a Bright spot in Bowe, but how good is Croyle gonna be? Hes a tough Kid, but i dont see him doing much, and Larry did look better in the preseason, actually making some guys miss as opposed to last year, where hed hit the pile and fall down...I see a 2-14 team, the worst in the NFL..Tony and Bowe could get them a few Wins..

There is a game here in Toronto part of the Ontario Lottery that is called pro-line. The odds of them winning a straight game were over 9.9 to 1 so you can't pick it but there is a pool that goes on every week and the winners split the pot. It's 5 bucks and the payout is usually around 400,000 to 500,000 each weak. If 5 people win you get 80 to 100 grande, 100 people 4 to 5 grande etc,. I picked pretty much all favorites and the Chiefs so I figure if I win I'll win alone or with two or three people tops. I don't expect to win at all but I'd rather risk losing 5 bucks on a miracle chance of half a mil rather than a better chance of 300 bucks (over 1000 people each week pick all favourites).

Kind of makes me wonder... if the Jets had a good team and went to the playoffs WITH Herm, then how good do you think they would they have been if they would have had a coach like Bill Parcels that year?

If offensive coordinator Chan Gailey was the head coach this year and not Herm, then I'm sure he would make Damon Huard the starting quarterback and the team could be respectable like 7-9.   Because they have a solid defense, and before Larry got injured and Herm made Croyle the starter, they were 4-4 last year... then they went on to lose their last 8 games!

btw, I think the Chiefs will go 4-12 this year.  I'm only giving them 4 wins because they have a weaker schedule this year, but they do get progressively worse every year with Herm.  When Vermeil left the team we had a 10-6 record and the highest ranking offense in the league, it only took Herm 2 years to completely dismantle that offense and put us in dead last in the league in offense!

The moneyline on the game is KC +1000 and NE -1600 on The Greek (popular online sportsbook).  Meaning if you put down $100 on the Chiefs and they win you get $1000, if you put down $1600 on the Pats and they win you get $100.
I just about never bet with lines like this, there isn't much value at all.

yeah... but can't you bet on the spread?  Like, I heard the spread was 16.  So can't you just do a straight up bet that Patriots cover the spread?  So taht if you put down $100 that the Patriots win by more than 16 then you win $100?   Can it work like that?

That's right except a bookie with charge "juice", it's how they make money.  Here is an example from Wikipedia:

Quote
A fair odds bet: Two people want to bet on opposing sides of an event with even odds. They are going to make the bet between each other without using the services of a bookmaker. Each person is willing to risk $100 to win $100. After each person pays their $100, there is a total of $200 in the pot. The person who loses receives nothing and the winner receives the full $200.

By contrast, when using a sportsbook with the odds set at −110 vs. −110 with vigorish factored in (the juice), each person would have to risk or lay $110 to win $100. The $10 is, in effect, a bookmaker's commission for taking the action. This $10 is not in play and cannot be doubled by the winning bettor; it can only be lost. A losing bettor simply loses his $110. A winning bettor wins back his original $110, plus his $100 winnings, for a total of $210.

You can bet the spread or the moneyline (who will win straight up), your choice.

I'm beside myself now. On one hand I want Cassel to blow out KC to show how much Brady is really needed. On the other I might win some cash if they lose.

Addition;

Now I'm happy. Matt Cassel from the end zone, 3 and long, facing a sack on a safety hits Moss for 50 yards. Fuck Brady. Go Pats.

TD, Cassel, Go Pats. 99.5 yard drive. Fuck Brady.

You were really close.  Everything went right for the Chiefs.  When I saw Brodie Croyle go down and Damon come in I thought the Chiefs had a serious chance at winning.  Damon led them right away down the field for a touchdown.  Then they almost tied the game and sent it in to overtime when the best reciever Bowe dropped it in the endzone.

Didn't matter anyway. I lost a few other picks.

The only time I wanna talk & think about the Chiefs is when i'm thinking about the early 90's.  When they had Okoye, Word, Derrick Thomas, & Neil Smith.  Scratch that, fuck Neil for selling out to the Donkeys :psych:.  I do love when they score at home, the fans get in with the song & do multiple chants of CHIEFS.  But seriously, the Chiefs won't go to the promiseland until they get rid of the Al Davis of GM's the overrated Carl Peterson.   :eh: Why hasn't this fool been fired yet?  People wanna talk about Millen, Peterson needs 2 be on the list also.  And when the next time, they have a 12-3 record with home field advantage wrapped up....lose the last game on purpose & go 12-4 instead.  Cause all the times they had a record with 10 more wins than losses they always lost the playoff game.  1 year they went 12-2, lost.  95, 97 & 2003 13-3 record, lost all of them.

They played hard...
