Title: Which franchise rules your city?
Post by: eS El Duque on September 10, 2008, 04:11:48 PM
If your town could save one sports team—college or pro—and the others had to relocate to Vladivostok, Russia, which one would stay?

In Denver, for instance, the fans would keep the Broncos and happily drive all other teams to the airport. Proof: If you added your name to the season-ticket waiting list now, it'd be nearly 190 years before you got a call.

ST. LOUIS? A CARDS TOWN. THE SKINS OWN DC.

Some cities are easy that way. St. Louis is a Cards town. The Skins own DC, lock, stock and pork barrel. Dallas belongs to the Cowboys, and if you don't believe it you better be wearing steel-toed boots. The rest of America? Glad you asked:

ATLANTA Georgia football. Every SEC grad gets a job in Atlanta. The Braves can't even sell out playoff games. Everybody thinks the Hawks moved to Calgary years ago.

BALTIMORE Ravens, in a squeaker over Michael Phelps.

BOSTON Red Sox. Once, Boston was a hockey town, and Orr's Bruins ruled. It's never been a Celtics town—despite Russell and Bird—partly because of the finally fading racism. Patriots? Pssshhht. They're not even in Boston. The Red Sox, though, sell out a cramped, rusted ballpark as though there were Hope Diamonds under every seat. Says longtime Boston sports yakker Eddie Andelman: "Who can have a decent conversation about anything else?"

CHARLOTTE NASCAR. Bobcats players could give fans halftime mani-pedis and still not draw.

CHICAGO Bears. The Cubbies are the Windy City's cute Labradoodle pets, but the Bears are in the blood. "Everybody in Chicago loves the Bears," admits Cubs shortstop Ryan Theriot. Pro football is to Chicago what airplanes are to Dayton. In third, the Bulls. Fourth, Notre Dame football.

CLEVELAND Browns. Name one other city that lost a team and had the league give it back! Name, uniforms, everything! If the Cavaliers left, two janitors might look up.

DETROIT Red Wings. It's called Hockeytown, not Basketballtown.

HOUSTON Yesterday. Everything in Houston was better in the old days—Luv Ya Blue, Hakeem the Dream, the Ryan Express. Now everything is an Applebee's opening.

INDIANAPOLIS Colts, which is funny. Four years ago, they couldn't even sell out the RCA Dome, smallest venue in the league. Now they've got brand-new digs.

LOS ANGELES Lakers. The real folks in town—bus drivers, gardeners, school-teachers—own Lakers jerseys. Dodgertown is in Florida. "There's a radio guy here with 'I Slept with Shaq' tattooed on his forehead," marvels Laker Derek Fisher. Think anyone's got "I Slept with Chris Kaman" tattooed on his forehead?

MIAMI Dolphins. Second: U. of Miami football. Third: Miami spring football. Last: Marlins, once again the C-SPAN of MLB attendance.

MINNEAPOLIS Vikings. The Twins get no love. Once, they were playing a Saturday afternoon game in the HumpDome, and it went extra innings. The game was stopped so the stadium crew could get the field ready for a football game that night. Ouch.

NEW YORK You see more Yankees hats in NYC than all other teams combined. Win 26 titles, that happens. Then there's this: MoviesUnlimited.com lists 21 flicks about the Yanks, four on the Giants and Mets each, two on the Knicks and one on the Rangers.

PHILADELPHIA Used to be Eagles, now it's Phillies. This is partly because of the Phils' young stars and partly because the Iggles owner has handed it to them. Jeffrey Lurie is a Boston guy who's made $800 million so far on his Eagles purchase but not many friends. You always get the feeling that his jet bound for his beloved Beantown is double-parked.

PHOENIX The Suns are hanging on, with Arizona State closing fast. Suns owner Robert "Foam Finger" Sarver has turned off so many fans while the ASU AD, Lisa Love, has turned so many on. Cardinals? Worst ownership in the history of owning things.

SAN FRANCISCO Says San Francisco Chronicle columnist Scott Ostler: "A second-string 49er having his chakras aligned is bigger news than any other team's top player winning the MVP, a Nobel Prize and dying, all on the same day."

SEATTLE Seahawks, but that's new. "When I first got here," says Matt Hasselbeck, "we'd play at Husky Stadium. They'd get 72,000 on Saturdays. We'd get 25,000 the next day, and 10,000 would be there for the Raiders."

TAMPA Bucs. "How can the Rays be ahead of two of the top franchises in baseball history and still get only 14,000 some nights?" asks Bucs corner Ronde Barber.

So there you have it. Meanwhile, I'm getting a time-share in Vladivostok. It's going to have some sick teams.

Fresno State Bulldogs - Football team. Even though the baseball team won the national championship this year they don't match up to the popularity of the football team. More attendance, more merchandise sales, more media coverage, especially this year because of some of our opponents, UCLA, Wisconsin, & Rutgers(W).

i honestly think it would be a tie.. you dont draw 3,000,000+ (22 seasons of 3M+) almost every year if no one likes ya.  dodgers draw an average of 2,946,443 since 78..and an avg. of 2.79 million since the stadium opened.  the dodgers have all types of attendance records.

los angeles is as much a dodger town, as it is a laker town.  everyone else ranks a far second.

Dodger history is great and everything, but they currently have nothing on the Lakers in terms of popularity. This was recently a topic of discussion on AM570 KLAC and nobody argued that this was a Dodger town...not even the hardcore fans. The 1 caller who tried to say it was almost even got laughed at. LOL.

the fact that they still bring in many many people into the stadium, have an insane hardcore fan base, and arn't even THAT good and havn't been since the late 80's  says alot

the writer of the article pointed out that everyone owns a laker jersey......but i'm pretty sure more people own dodger hats, lol.

also i want to bring up the what if question..........what if the dodgers were to start rolling in the playoffs now? don't you think that given what i stated earlier they'd be up there with the Red Sox as far as city fan support??

IF is the key word...most people who own the LA "Dodger" hats don't even care for baseball. IF the Dodgers started doing big things on a consistent basis, THEN we could compare them to the Lakers. As of now, they have a lot of work to put in...PeACe

just because they're not hanging banners doesn't take away the fact that they're still very much LA's team along with the lakers. in no way shape or form do i believe or have ever seen a dramatic between the love the city has for both.

Boston has been more Patriots than Red Sox as of the last 15 years. Maine doesn't count they are not in the epicenter of it. I live within 5 miles of Gillette, I see it. Patriot Place is the best sports/ entertainment/shopping/ area in the country.

Actually... you are wrong... if you got 1 hour east into this valley called the Inland Empire, you'll find that there are as many Angel fans as Dodger fans. Everyone under the age of 30 is majority Angel fans (won a World Series more resent, has a Mexican owner, seen as just better baseball overall) BUT everyone is a Laker fan. So say you have... what... there is 3million in this valley, and half are Angel fans, and the other half is Dodger fans, but EVERYONE is a Laker fan, save the 2% of idiots who root for the one team no one likes, then the Lakers CRUSH the Dodgers in greater LA. If you go in LA city limits, then you might have an argument, though the Lakers still take the title. After all, 3 million fans, but there is 56,000 in that stadium compared to 19,000 for the Lakers, on top of that there are 81 home games in baseball, compared to 41 home games in basketball. So, if you say that the Dodgers do draw 3million people, that's only an average of 37,000, which is not selling out every game. Now tell me the last time the Lakers DIDN'T have a sell out. To be honest, I don't remember, but I still think Nick Van Exel was shadow boxing well Vlade Divac blew kisses to the crowd.

check what i said...i was in no way comparing the lakers attendance with the dodgers..of course the dodgers draw more cause of the longer schedule and bigger stadium...

what i did say is that "you dont draw 3M+ if no one likes ya".  if LA wasnt a dodger city, we would only draw about 15,000 fans a game.

I was responding to Jake.

Of course you don't draw 3mil if no one likes you. The Angels are drawing 3mil as well, Vlad Guerrero and Manny Ramirez are so popular right now they could be mayors of their city and Arte Moreno I think could be governor of California if one of his positions is more lower beer prices. Both are liked quiet well.

Still... the Lakers are the kings. If the Lakers could have an area large enough to max their attendance, I think you'd see a 40,000+ stadium complete with cheap sets that you know everyone in East Los, South LA and the poorer areas would populate. Because from my experience, even when the Lakers have an off year, they have a HUGE following in the hood, and they'd all love to go to a game, but can't afford it.

if the lakers werent in the hunt for 20 years (like the dodgers), would anyone even care about the lakers?

actually... yes. They are on TV everyday, and they have that history of winning. The Dodgers don't draw flies to shit when they don't hit .500. And in the 90's they had years when they could draw. Resently they've had some decent years, and LA fans don't really care if they are going to the World Series, or Finals, or anything else. The LA Rams drew sell outs and NEVER won a Super Bowl, the Lakers sold out when they sucked, or were playoff underdogs, and the Dodgers still draw for the most part when they were mediocre. LA loves it's teams, and the experience of live sports.

This is why they NFL is retarded. If they knew what's best for them, they get a team in LA right now. LA is a market of loyal fans. Not the loudest, but they arrive for games.

Funny think, I'm not arguing anyone from MN... lol.

For the record, yes MN is all about the Vikings, BUT, if the Wild ever win something, I think this will go back to a hockey state in no time. They pride themselves on hockey, notice the Mighty Ducks was all in MN, and that's because MN is just waiting for a hockey team to give them that first Stanley Cup. Until then though, it's all about the Vikings and football.

that whole angel thing is a recent phenomena. i have cousins in Alta Loma that i stayed the summer with and we went to a couple of quake /lake elsinor storm/ angel games (back when they had chillie davis, tim salmon, jim edmonds, jt snow [went to the game where that bitch got cracked with a bat])  and it was pretty empty and you saw a lot of dodger apparel out there  as well. when the angels started winning and got that world series win, it was like clipper fans coming out when they made the playoffs.

if i had to choose i would go with the Dodgers...

only because....

there is nothing like going to Dodger game on a nice summer night having some beers and dodger dogs and hanging out with your homies and taking in a good game.

much better than most Laker games i been too.... and also going to a Dodger Game is much cheaper than going to a Laker game....

so me personally id rather do that.

now dont get me wrong... i like going to Laker games and all but i cant do it as often because its more expensive... but they are fun and love going as well...

but i guess there is just something about being at Dodger Stadium...

For me LA is just as much a Dodger town as it is a Laker town.

I agree... in the 90's when I went to an Angels game, they said there were 16,000, and honestly I think they added a couple thousand more. But the whole Angel thing proves that now the Dodgers are not untouchable, and in fact replaceable, and that the Lakers own LA. I've been to Dodger Stadium in a summer day, and let me say this, there is nothing like Baseball in a nice summer day. Live outdoor baseball in general might be the best experience in sports. The Twins in a dome sucks ass, Football is too big (though I'm going off my Raider memories which are now like 15 years old... lol) and basketball is cool except it's all indoors. So yes, baseball in general is a great live sport. With that said, the Lakers still beat the Dodgers in LA, and in greater LA, and on top of that, basketball is much better to watch on tv than baseball. Basketball has better action, baseball is puts people to sleep.

If LA had to chose, I now at least the IE would go with the Lakers... case close

Laker fans have always been loyal...even in the Sedale Threatt days, we always sold out. Dodgers are big, don't get me wrong, but LA is clearly a Laker town. your opinion coming from Bakersfield doesn't really hold much weight on this issue.

i consider myself more of a laker fan than a dodger fan, but i'd still say that it's just as much of a dodger town

plus LA is one of the sketchiest , EN VOUGE towns in the world. so the statement that dodgers make with their fans and NOT BEING THAT GOODn says a lot. of corse the lakers have a lot of fans....they're always winning, but take away that luster and it's hard to say that they'd still have the same loyalty

Laker fans have always been loyal...even in the Sedale Threatt days, we always sold out. Dodgers are big, don't get me wrong, but LA is clearly a Laker town. your opinion coming from Bakersfield doesn't really hold much weight on this issue.

as I said, my opinion comes from San Bernardino/Riverside were I see as many Dodger hats as Angels hats. But everyone is a Laker's fan.

actually it does seeing how i was born and raised in santa monica, plus bakersfield's sports taste is identical to those of Los Angeles.

BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!

I'm from San Bernardino and never would I say our taste is like LA's. We have way less loyalty to LA and are willing to go with Orange County teams if need be. Orange County is closer to LA than Bakersfield and you know they have less Dodger fans. Bakersfield gave everyone the Baka Boyz, then has never done shit for Cali. San Bernardino is closer to LA than Bakersfield, and we have different taste in sports than LA. Face facts dogg, you don't rep LA.

1. i like how i'm the only one who knows and has lived in all three places.

2. i never said San Berdoo was identical to LA,i said BAKERSFIELD Was,  however mr. minnesota, LA sports are still more popular over there than the homegrown sports. that's a fact that i can't believe you'd even try to debate, the angels could win it all this year and the dodgers would still be more popular than the quake/lake elsinor storm/angels combined. the only thing that's more popular out there than the LA team is the Ducks and you can thank Disney for that one, lol.

3. bakersfield's sports preferences is the EXACT same as los angeles'  . in most part because most of the growth in bakersfield is all the influx of LA people moving here. baseketball= lakers with no real 2nd ever baseball=dodgers with only the old school bakersfield dodgers 2nd football college has been USC before carson palmer ever threw his first pass and the only split here is Raiders......then a far second niners

4. bakersfield and kern county has given much more than you realize, for one we've given birth to probably the greatest mexican american ever....Caesar Chavez. One of the former cheif justices Earl warren and Former Gov. of california as well,  2 of the top 5 country music artists of all time have been from bakersfield. the most influencial metal band of the 90's , Korn is all from here, Gold's Gym......thank you bakersfield native Ric Drasin, home to the MEARS family and the Harvick family of NASCAR and other professional motorsport leagues, Many of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are from the BAkersfield Blaze, BC is the #1 junior college in California, Frank Gifford hall of fame NFL player, Brock Marion superbowl Champion, Joey Porter superbowl champ and Probowler, Gold Medalist Stephen Neal who also plays for the NE patriots, David Carr was the #1 pick in the NFL draft and the first Texan player ever pretty much, The FIRST AFrican American boxer Jack Johnson, Larsen Jenson olympic medalist in 2004 and 2008, BHS  and EBHS are considered the two of the top high school programs in california. Plus many many many many many many many many many many many MANY flims are filmed here as well.

so i wouldn't really say that the whack ass Baka boys is all we've given california

98 miles north of Los Angeles>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Michigan.
