Title: Ice Cube says "YES" to Nas/Scarface collabo album

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Over 20 years into his career, Hip-Hop legend, actor, and director Ice Cube is showing no signs of slowing down artistically.

On pace to have his second consecutive best-selling, independent Hip-Hop album of the year, Cube explained in an exclusive interview with AllHipHop.com that Raw Footage’s stronger political/social content could not have come at a more opportune time.

“I knew with Laugh Now, Cry Later it was more of a reintroduction. I wasn’t sure if all the antennas would be up to listen to what I really had to say,” Cube reflected. “I had to make a record to show I could more or less still rap on that tip. On this one I could give more of that street knowledge. The timing of the presidential election just fell into place.”

The poignant third single and video “Why Me,” which features Musiq Soulchild, displays Cube personifying the emotions of innocent murder victims, and how the problem of gun violence extends to people around the world.

“What I wanted to do [in the video] was use real people, not a whole bunch of actors. I wanted to show people who were really victims of that kind of violence,” Cube detailed. “So once I knew I was gonna do that I knew the video had the ability to be powerful once we tied it together. We had different scenes of the hood, Somalia, and the Middle East to show it wasn’t a hood issue, but a world problem. And with [director] Benny Boom it would be hard to mess that concept up.”

Referencing the intense fallout of the nation’s economic woes and the lack of any type of personal responsibility, Cube argues the problem extends past government corruption to American culture as a whole.

“Take a show like Oprah Winfrey where every victim gets up there and cries about whose fault it is that they’re this way. We just became a culture of ‘I don’t have to take responsibility, let me just pass the buck.’ You can do anything in America once you apologize,” Cube stated. “Just having that attitude eroded the pride in saying ‘this is my balls and my word.’ Men used to say they were going to do something then they’d do it. Now, you don’t know if he’s going do it or not. It’s too much TV and looking at other people’s lives and [people] not worrying about their own.”

Last week, Houston rapper Scarface revealed in a surprise announcement that he was quitting the rap game after his next album Emeritus. However, the Texas legend gave himself an out, illuminating his desire to craft one final album; a dream supergroup project between himself, Nas, and Ice Cube.

Upon hearing the news, Cube was ecstatic about moving the project past talk and into the studio.

“Of course, I wouldn’t even think twice about doing that…hell yeah!” Cube declared. “I think the album would be crazy, lyrics would be sick, and Hip-Hop would love it. It’s just making that business happen, that’s the part that gets funky. I ain’t never turned down these kind of projects, they just don’t happen for whatever reasons. But I’m up for some s**t like this because I know we can make a dope record.”

If I were them, I'd try and release that shit independently. That way there's more clearance from industry politics.

The idea is nice, but this should have happened 5-6 years ago.

"Made" was a solid album with some face-classic tracks (burn, suicide note)
"untitled" showed nas still has it
cube last 2 albums been fine imo; a bit better than his previous 2 (w&p 1-2)

let face and cube pick the beats though haha

I didn't play that Scarface album much, so there ya go. Nas is not my favorite (type of) rapper, so I'm not judging him. Ice Cube proved to me with his last two albums (especially his awful last album) he does not have a good ear for beats.

It would be a dope album but the biggest piece as far as label politics goes is not in yet. Once he signs on, it comes down to Def Jam signing off on him. I'm sure the artists will be willing but the labels gotta agree too. I think that's a dope collabo album as far as East/West/South goes. There might be better rappers from each region ("might") but I can't think of three who would sound as dope together on one album. This could be interesting but as we've learned with other great preposed projects, it ain't worth getting hyped about until it hits the store shelves.

You should go back and check out Made again. One of the best albums to drop last year

The 3 Kings of their region (ok, maybe not now, but when you think of the crowns, these are the 3 that first enter your mind after the 2 legends.). It would be unbelievable. I always just wanted a song from these 3, and add in Common. But an album would be more than I can ask.

Love for this to happen but it seems like there would be far too many people trying to get a piece of the pie.  That's the funky part Cube is talking about.  I think Nas (and his label situation) is the biggest obstacle, no doubt.  Otherwise, I could see this happening.

Well, Face was actually the one who planted the seed in the first place. He mentioned in an interview that he was done doing solo albums but if a special situation existed like a group album with Nas-Cube, he'd do more records. I think Face would be onboard in a heartbeat. Like I said, I think Nas would be open to do the album but then it's Def Jam. It would be some hot shit but music is still business and the more closer it comes to a reality, the more close people's fingers get to fucking with the project. I hope to see it but just because Cube says he'd like to do it, there is still going to be a time when people start asking about money and that is when the album either happens or falls apart. Thing is the people woofing about the cash probably won't even be the guys who actually go in the booth. Who knows though. I think this album would be awesome for hip-hop if it were to be realized but the industry is political as fuck.

Music wise, that would probably be true. The product would more likely reach its true potential.

However, messing with Dre means messing with big business. With major labels getting involved in projects like this the money's spread around too much, the artists don't get what they feel they deserve out of it and the record never gets made. Indie is the only way. But with Nas at Def Jam... don't know. Maybe they'd let him do it, maybe not. They'd surely want a piece of the pie though.

If they did it, undoubtedly should be indie.  Fuck Dr. Dre his dick is way to far up Jimmy Iovine's ass to be associated w/ some shit like this.  It would do nothing but completely fuck it up.  Assemble a production team to do the bulk of the beats.  And everybody MUST be in the studio together producers and rappers- no emailing verses / beats.  Shit will not come off right if they're not in the studio creating together.

And that right there would be the kicker along w/ label politics.  Getting everyone together at the same time.

Sure would be cool if this happened but when was the last time this kind of big collaboration album happened?
There is so many promises that I don't trust nothing anymore.
What about those pete rock/dpg, kurupt/dj quick albums or something like that.
Propably every one of these get shelved.

I'd love this to happen. If it does I hope it isn't rushed and they take time track for track. I'd rather nas not be in the group but he might be exactly what it needs so cube can step up his lyricism.
