Actually pay for digital downloads? like you'll buy MP3s from Itunes, Napster, Amazon, etc? even whole albums from those retailers..Just curious to see if the paid digital download age has had any help at all with sales..
especially west coast..
-
I started to lately. I for the most part like hard copies with inserts and booklets, etc. But I purchased Crooked, Squeak Ru and Roscoe digitally so it's all good.

I feel that..someone who supports the digital downloads..that's wassup!
anyone else?
-
I Dont i just ilegally download shit when i do buy i like hard copys
-
I been coppin' digitally for a while now. I just got sick of searching for stuff online for free and gave in and started coppin'. Feels better too when you support the artist, especially the dudes that aren't on major labels. To be honest I cop real CDs so rarely now, that it doesn't even phase me anymore not having the cover work and stuff. What am I supposed to do with it anyway? LOL.
-
i get down on itunes every blue moon, i'm opening a digital download site 1st quarter 09, its gonna be real big
-
Nope. Here's how I maneuver...
I download everything I'm interested in off sites like rapgodfathers.com and shit like that. If I really like the album and its from an artist I like and respect (ie: Game, Cube, etc) then I'll buy the cd. If its decent or theres just a few songs I like then I'll keep those songs and put them on my ipod or a mix cd for the car.
I don't pay for mp3s. Never have, never will. Its ridiculous.
-

-
Don't use Itunes... not opposed to buying digitally but really haven't yet.
Last CD I ordered off the net was K-Aktive's Funk Season.
If Bishop, Taje, Indef etc.. all put out their most recent mixtape/street albums in hard copy form with the covers and all.. I'd buy all of them.
-
I have bought some mp3's over the last few years, but I usually follow G.Boogy's example.
-
emusic.com for hard to find HQ songs...also download from Ares, Bittorrent...I'll buy hard copies of my fav artists though no matter what.(unless :-\ I'm broke)
-
I only pay for it if:
1. it's exclusively a digital release;
2. I want to support the artist;
3. I can't find it for free download elsewhere
Number two and three weigh the highest.
-

I ain't fucking with that garbage Itunes, and I especially avoid anything related to DRM or any other copy protection system.
I also avoid sites that have some DRM-protected files and some regular mp3-files, and WMA or AAC is out of the question.
I wanted to buy some stuff from Amazon MP3, but they didn't want my money because I'm not American.
What I'd like to see:
A mp3 shop with millions of albums and single tracks available - mp3 format - properly tagged - choose your own bitrate, from 192 to 320.
Easy to use, fast to download, decent prices, easy to sort by genre/year/alphabetically, etc. if you buy the single, you can complete the album later at discount price.
Allofmp3 was such a site, but it's Russian owners set the price so low that RIAA nearly demanded U.S. gov to threaten Russia with war if they didn't take it down. :D
As long as the "illegal" market is 100 times better than the half-assed overpriced legal market, I'll continue downloading, and buy the occasional album that deserves it. :sshh:
-
What I want to know is if those CD's on Amazon and other sites are legit and if the sales go back to the artist or not? Cause I rather purchase a CD directly from Bishop or Taje or Indef to make sure they get their money.
-
I've been using emusic.com for about a year now. It's awesome. There's so much quality underground, independent hip-hop on that site it's unreal. Not having the cover doesn't really bother me, and the credits are normally easy enough to find (*cough* The Vault *cough*)
I'm totally against downloading albums illegally. Maybe it's because I'm older than some of the heads here, so I didn't grow up with the concept that you get music free. The idea of just sitting on a PC and essentially stealing every album I want from the artists really offends me. The only time I'll do that is if an album is out of print and I can't find a used copy, or if it's one of those out of print albums where the used price is ridiculous.
Rant over, LOL.

-
rarely
-
I don't buy music online. I always want hard copies. The little music I download are 99 % leaks, singles and promos from sites like DubCNN, Nah Right or what have you. Sometimes if I'm looking for a certain song I really want to get I'll download it where ever I can find it, but they're always some shit that's out of print or isn't available otherwise.
-
i much prefer having hard copies, i sorta like to collect them
-
I'll buy singles. But mainly right now I just collect as many pepsi & coke bottle caps to get points & use them 2 get songs right now. So I can create special cd's.
-
To put this in a true perspective.
Our digital sales are up over 60% for the year.
Our physical CD sales are down a lil over 10%.
by late 2010, PYO Entertainment International Inc plans to significantly decrease (if not completely remove)
physical discs from our inventory of manufactured goods.
Simply put, CDs are almost as over as Minidisc are now..

its a shame, its still cool to go back to old cd's and look at the inserts and stuff, i was doing it with some old spice 1 and ray luv cd's iv not looked at in years
but then again artists have to make money
-
Physical CDs will become gems soon..
and most of you will slap yourself for your mistreatment of them when they (were) here!!
LMAO.

Although, I hope you're wrong about all sales going digital in the future. I just won't be satisfied with the sound quality MP3's are sold today.

i have like 600 goin on maybe 700, all pretty perfect condition, i think imma keep it that way :)
-
I have never bought digital downloads and I probably never will. I like to buy physical copies because I'm a record collector. It just pleasing to watch your own music collection. CDs are more durable than mp3's are. A CD, which is properly taken care of, can last over hundred years where as hard drivers are expected to live about five years.

I USED to, but messed up so many classics when I was younger and didn't realize what I was doing, LOL. It's gotten to the point where some albums are just easier for me to replace digitally.
BTW: To the poster that asked if Amazon digital sales are official, they most certainly are and so are iTunes.
-
Furthermore.. Amazon is the #1 Digital Distributor in the World.. even above iTunes!
-
What I want to know is if those CD's on Amazon and other sites are legit and if the sales go back to the artist or not? Cause I rather purchase a CD directly from Bishop or Taje or Indef to make sure they get their money.
to my knowledge, yes the artists make a good amount of money via digital sales..

well if u have a digital distribution deal (as Crooked I does), then u make a good % of paper from your sales..

that all depends on the contract they sign
an independent artist probably does. usher for example doesn't make shit from record/digital sales.

fuck digital, i still buy cds
That's the word mayne!
Fuck all those digital downloads, I've never paid for an mp3. But I paid hella money for hard copies, CDs or LPs, never mind. Digital downloads are killing the whole music industry. Wake your ass up and go out for the hard copies, it's way better. Your PC will fuck up and all those digital downloads won't be yours no more.
It's a bit overstated, but ain't that true?

I purchased Khayree´s (http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=156331.0) shit because it's only available digitally.... :-\ :-[ (and no free links to be found)
.If Bishop, Taje, Indef etc.. all put out their most recent mixtape/street albums in hard copy form with the covers and all.. I'd buy all of them.
you can find hardcopies of Bishop on amazon (I got 3 of them, only missing Pope Mobile).

Legit? Yes and no.
As far I can tell Caltroit is legit,Nigger Noize and The Confessional is not. But I like hard copies with booklet so.... :P
I also bought cd´s from Young Maylay,Crazy Toones and Hittman on Amazon, they all look legit.

But my question is how do you truely know if that money is going to go back to the artists? Some of those CD's on Amazon look like some bootleg shit that isn't put on there by the artist. I don't want to buy that shit and have the money goto some dude that is not associated with the artist.
-
^well even Butch Cassidy was praising Itunes and digital sales to me yesterday; he said he makes $7-8$ off digital sales while only about 50 cents on hard copies..
-
Interesting. I recall hearing a Mr. Shadow interview conducted by Chrymes. He said he made $35,000+ off the trunk of his car. No label, no distribution, nothing. It was all self-made. And this was before the digital revolution made headlines all across the globe.
CD pressing is becoming very expensive now, due to the shift in presentation. There's the casing, the album booklet, the transfer from computer to compact disc, all of which may cease to exist come the next few years. Just like how cathode-ray tubes are being phased out and replaced by LCDs for television (and analog getting switched over to digital for the U.S. might I add). With digital distribution, there's no shipping and stocking. Artists don't need to worry about being shelved anymore because the digital format breaks these barriers without even breaking into the vault.
If there's one thing I'm going to miss, it's the album booklet. Producers, mixers, masters, recorders and all those guys - they're the ones biting the dust in means of being credited.
You know what? I just came up with a new topic.

What's fucked up about it is Apple want's to sell DRM free music, it was the labels that insisted on it. IMO, iTunes has helped the record biz. At least they gave people a choice on whether to download legit or not. The labels then wanted to charge more for certain songs, and apple refused. That's when they gave competitors green light to sell DRM free music. I think that is bitchery at the highest scale!
BTW, Apple does sell DRM free music with their iTunes plus service.
-
On topic, I do buy music occasionally on iTunes. I bought Crook's single....
-
http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/11/amazons-artist.html
Amazon + Amazon Digital = Worldwide Dominance
But the issue is not who is the top digital retailer, that is all a matter of preference..
The point of this post is that digital sales are rapidly replacing physical cd sales and it will be more than apparent in just another year or so..
-
I wanna tap into Japan and Germany for digital distribution...
do you know anything about that Shade?? Tech and I are dropping a digital download early next year and I wanna get it available to as far in each direction as I can...
-
naw I am not going to pay for a download when I could get it for free...I mean, where the hell is the sense in that?
-
The last time i was in l.a. i've spent HOURS inside one of the most beautiful records store that i've ever seen:

The Krasnoe Dinamo: Yeah that looks very nice, I have to visit that store too. By the way I checked their website:

Amoeba is the "last" great music store..
I never thought I would see the day that the Tower Records on Sunset Blvd would close,
and I hope with all faith that this monumental piece of real estate doesn't fall victim to what the industry has become!
