Title: Great NBA battles of the season (that's a serious basketball topic, please!)
Post by: Antonio on November 22, 2008, 04:42:58 PM
I've chosed to review some of the most interesting NBA battles of the regular season so far. One player against another. I'll review only their one-on-one situations. The winner can be the guy with the worst global stats out of the two, but with the best stats when the two players faced each others. I won't review the minutes where one of the two is not playing. And i'll judge every single. I've chosen not to use the +1 or -1 voting system, but i'll make comments after each quarters and i'll use stats to compare their performances. It's just my opinion, so don't get mad.

BYNUM vs Shaq (LAL@PHO, 11/20/2008): Andrew Bynum wins (but it's a close one as Shaq also plays well)
GASOL vs Amare (LAL@PHO, 11/20/2008): Pau Gasol wins
GASOL vs Nowitski (DAL@LAL, 11/28/2008): Pau Gasol wins
BYNUM vs Bosh (TOR@LAL, 11/30/2008): Andrew Bynum wins
GASOL vs E.Brand (LAL@PHI, 12/03/2008): Pau Gasol wins

SHAQ VS BYNUM SITUATIONS ONLY (LAL@PHO, 11/20/2008)

1st Quarter
-11:44 - Shaq goes one on one against Bynum from the post. Great body defence by Bynum who also extends his arm to force Shaq missing the baby-hook. BYNUM +1, SHAQ -1
-11:18 - Shaq again in the post against Bynum. This time he choses to pass the ball out, but it's a TO. Radmanovic steals it and Kobe is fouled (2/2 from the line). SHAQ -1
-10:49 - Kobe passes the ball inside to Bynum. Bynum is doubled, and he loses the ball. Kobe's fault, if you ask me. Bynum was clearly doubled.
-10:32 - Amare takes a jumpshot. Bynum grabs the defensive rebound over Shaq using his body against him. Power rebound. BYNUM +1
-10:10 - Shaq in the post against Bynum. Wonderful spin-around movement and dunk by Shaq. Bynum taken to school here. SHAQ +1, BYNUM -1
-8:30 - Shaq one on one against Bynum. He takes an easy shot but he misses it. Shaq's fault more than Bynum's defence. SHAQ -1
-8:20 - Kobe passes inside to Bynum with a lob. The ball is too high to dunk it, so Bynum grabs it, he takes position with the body, he tries to go on on one, he almost loses the ball but he recovers it and he makes a good jumpshort on Shaq. BYNUM +1
-8:06 - Great defence by Bynum against O'Neal. 3 seconds called on Shaq. BYNUM +1
-4:55 - Defensive violation called on Shaq. Kobe misses from the line. SHAQ -1

2nd Quarter

-6:37 - Ariza takes a forced 3 point shot. Bynum grabs the offensive rebound over Shaq. BYNUM +1, SHAQ -1
-6:17 - Shaq inside against Bynum. Foul by Bynum (no FT).
-6:13 - Shaq in the post against Bynum. Bad defence by Bynum. Foul by Bynum. 2 FT for Shaq (0/2 from the line). BYNUM -1

3rd Quarter
-11:35 - Lob by Nash to Shaq. Bynum loses him. Radmanovic's great help stops Shaq from a dunk. BYNUM -1
-11:31 - Bynum defends against Nash who's penetrating. He loses Shaq and Shaq dunks. Not Bynum's fault. Bad rotation on Lakers defence, SHAQ +1
-11:18 - Very lazy defence by Shaq who loses Bynum letting him have a nice dunk. SHAQ -1, BYNUM +1
-10:14 - Offensive rebound by Shaq and dunk. Bynum is out of position. BYNUM -1, SHAQ +1
-9:51 - Wonderful pick-n-roll between Kobe and Bynum. Shaq loses Bynum who dunks. SHAQ -1, BYNUM +1
-9:41 - Shaq in the post against Bynum. Great assist to Barnes. SHAQ +1
-9:05 - Shaq goes inside against Bynum. He misses the layup. Then Bynum takes a foul on him. 2 FT (Shaq goes 1/2). BYNUM -1, SHAQ +1

The stats against each other's:

Bynum: 6 PTS (3/3 FG), 2 REB, 1 TO, 3 PF
Shaq: 7 PTS (3/5 FG), (1/3 FT), 1 REB, 1 ASS, 3 TO

My personal points:

Bynum: +2 points
Shaq: -2 points

The winner: Andrew Bynum at the points (stats are very similiar).

Dirk is the main dude on the team whereas Gasol is just another nigga on the Lakers. The Mavericks defense ain't as concerned about him.

Nowitzki should be a second option, at best. Dude is no team leader. Gasol was putting up big numbers on Nowitzki when he was the leader of Memphis, too. 8)

At best? Gobble a dick. What tremendous success Memphis had with Gasol as their great leader  ::) Nowitzki would tear it up completely when playing alongside a killer instinct clutch player who gets double teamed

LMAO@dissing Gasol's success with Memphis...he single-handedly led a team with a buncha no-names to the playoffs for 3 consecutive years in the western conference. Don't forget, Memphis was once a 50-win team with Gasol as a leader and James Posey as his sidekick. LOL. Don't hate.

Durant is unquestionably gunna be an elite player in this league for years to come...we can't say the same about Oden just yet.

yeah but they had no clue he was gonna get hurt in a freak injury

i think when you got b-roy, a big man is the best choice

i bet Oden can maybe be a 12-10 guy or somethin like that

no Howard or Okafor though....

Roy is a PG/SG...Durant would be great at small forward for the Blazers. Oden might be great, too, but there's a MIGHT in that.

and what do you mean by "no Okafor"? Okafor has disappointed ever since he came into the league...LOL

Okafor is comparable to Dalambert...I'd still say Dalambert is the better defender. Oden is probably gunna end up in the same classification as them.

Sorry for the delay.

GASOL vs Nowitski (DAL@LAL, 11/28/2008)

1st Quarter

- 10:02 - Gasol in the post against Dirk. Fadeway jumpshot missed.
- 9:56 - Dirk 3 pointer made on a fast transition.
- 8:55 - Dirk fadeway jumpshot missed.
- 8:27 - Pau gets the ball on the fastbreak and assists Bynum for the slam.
- 6:54 - Pau grabs an offensive rebounds and makes the tap-in for 2 points.
- 6:31 - Defensive rebound by Pau.
- 4:40 - Defensive rebound by Dirk.
- 4:20 - Defensive reboound by Dirk.
- 4:10 - Jumpshot made by Dirk.
- 2:39 - Forced jumpshot missed by Dirk. Good Pau defence.
- 2:20 - Pau assist to Kobe.
- 1:56 - Dirk assist to Kidd.
- 1:37 - Pau in the post against Dirk. Baby-hook made.
- 1:30 - Pau defensive foul.
- 0:36 - Excellent pick-n-roll play between Pau and Vujacic. Pau misses the jumpshot.
- 0:13 - Defensive rebound by Dirk.
- 0:01 - Gasol assisted on the fastbreak for the layup.

Both the players had a pretty similiar first quarter (even stats wise, Pau was 6/2 with 2 assists while Dirk was 5/3 with 1 assist), but if you ask me Pau wins
at the points, cause Dirk never went in the post against Pau. He just made jumpshots, like usual. Pau was the key player in the triangle offense,
constantly getting the ball in his hands and creating shots for himself and his teammates.

2nd Quarter

- 1:32 - 3 pointer missed by Dirk

They faced each others just a few minutes, with nothing relevant happened.

3rd Quarter

- 11:27 - Gasol blocks Barea
- 11:23 - Dirk forced jumpshot missed
- 10:56 - Fastbreak layup scored by Dirk
- 8:17 - Offensive rebound by Pau
- 8:05 - Steal by Dirk
- 7:49 - Fastbreak layup scored by Dirk. 3 point play as he converts the additional ft too.
- 7:25 - Pau in the post against Dirk. Jumpshot missed.
- 6:59 - Block by Pau
- 6:36 - Dirk turnover
- 6:19 - Wonderful assist by Pau to Bynum for the easy layup
- 6:00 - Dirk drives inside and he's fouled by Fisher (2/2 FT)
- 5:36 - Dirk 3pointer made
- 3:23 - Pau jumper converted.
- 3:03 - Disgusting forced jumpshot missed by Dirk
- 2:19 - Another forced jumpshot missed by Dirk
- 1:12 - Pau slams home an alley-hoop assist by Odom
- 0:37 - Pau grabs an offensive rebounds, then tries the tap-in, then tries it again finally scoring 2 points.
- 0:05 - Dirk defensive rebound

Once again Pau wins the battle here. He gets a pair of crucial offensive rebounds, he has some nice assists, a block, and he makes 6 points too. Dirk,
on the other hand, only shot from long distance, forcing too many shots, and letting Pau grab too many offensive rebounds.

4th Quarter

- 7:11 - Pau blocks Brass
- 5:24 - Dirk misses a 3pointer
- 5:23 - Pau grabs the defensive rebound
- 4:20 - Dirk defensive rebound
- 3.51 - TO by Dirk that leads to 2 points for the Lakers
- 3:25 - Dirk goes inside and scores
- 2:26 - Dirk defensive rebound
- 1:46 - Jumpshot scored by Pau

I liked Pau in this last quarter too. Dirk only made 2 points, which is ridiculous for the franchise player of a team who's loosing. Pau, on the other hand,
defended very well against him and even if he didn't do great things in this quarter, i still blame Dirk for not leading his team. I can't let him win this matchup.

Gasol: 14 points (7/11 2FG), 3 Assists, 5 Rebounds (3 Offensive), 3 Blocks, 1 Foul
Dirk: 16 points (4/9 2FG) (3/3 FT) (2/4 3FG), 1 Assist, 6 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 2 TO

The Winner: Pau Gasol

Granger and Kobe play 2 different positions, geniuses.

It's gunna be Marquis Daniels vs. Kobe Bryant and Danny Granger vs. Trevor Ariza.

LOL I know that NIK.  Granger will be guarding Kobe during some of the game though, I am sure about it, who knows if Kobe will be able to guard Granger at all though.

Kobe would be able to guard Granger better than Granger could guard him, no question.

BYNUM vs Bosh (TOR@LAL, 1130/2008)

1st Quarter

- 11:30 - Bynum in the post against Bosh. Scores.
- 10:15 - Bosh attacks Bynum with a penetration and he's fouled (Bosh 1/2 FT)
- 9:45 - Bosh makes a midrange jumper.
- 7:51 - Bynum blocks Bosh's jumpshot.
- 7:20 - Bynum in the post against Bosh. He misses the shot.

Nothin really serious happened.

2nd Quarter

- 11:41 - Bynum in the post against Bosh. He misses the shot.
- 11:28 - Bosh in the post against Bosh. Wonderful shut-down defence by Bynum. Bosh misses the off balanced fadeway.
- 10:50 - Bynum assists Sasha Vujacic.

I was worried about those rumors of Bynum having knee problems, but after i've seen him defending this way against Bosh i took a smile.
I mean Bynum shutted Bosh down hard. Wonderful movements with the legs on defence, great use of the body, great intimidating presence.
Bosh suffered him so much that Mitchell had to put Andrea Bargnani on him in defence. Bynum wins this round thanks to his impressing
defence (he continues to shut him down in defence, but i can't make the battle since Bosh defends on Odom and Mitchell puts Bargnani,
Humpries or Kapono on Bynum..)

3rd Quarter
- 11:08 - Bynum's wonderfun pick-n-roll executed with Kobe. 2 points.
- 10:06 - Bosh's TO.
- 10:25 - Bynum shut Bosh's drive to the hoop down with his long arms. Impressive defence. Bosh exposed.
- 9:30 - Bynum misses a jumpshot.
- 9:17 - Bosh 3pointer made.
- 6:46 - Bosh in the post against Bynum. Block by Bynum. Bosh once again exposed.
- 6:31 - Bynum in the post against Bosh. 2 wonderful points made turning around Bosh's body.
- 5:44 - Bynum grabs the ball inside. He's blocked (it was a foul tho'), but he gets the ball again and scores.
- 5.25 - Long jumpshot missed by Bosh.
- 4:42 - Bynum in the post against Bosh. Exposed once again. 2 points.

I don't even need to continue this. Bynum wins. No, let me say it better: Bynum dominates.

(partials till 4:42 in the 3rd quarter)
Bynum = 10 points (5/9 2FG), 2 PF, 2 Blocks, 1 Assist, 1 Rebound (1 Offensive)
Bosh = 6 points (1/5 2FG) (1/1 3PTS) (1/2 FT), 1 TO

Yeah, but Kobe didn't defend on Granger so it's not a real one on one battle.. I can only review one side of the game, the offensive one. But the goal of this topic is to show you can win a battle even on the defensive end (see Bynum vs CB4)

I've just downloaded it. Being a Laker fan i usually see the Lakers over other games, but i've downloaded this one too cause the battle is gonna be interesting.

Garnett vs Howard
Gasol vs Brand
Granger vs Pierce

coming up next.

Hey guys you can do this "game" by yourself too, if you want. You don't need to put play-by-play reviews, just the stats of the two (only when they face each others) and your comments. This way we will improve our archive.
