Title: new HD TV problems
Post by: Rick McCrank on December 02, 2008, 05:00:00 PM
my brother got a Sony Bravia 46 inch LCD

the picture looks like shit compared to in the store, what's the deal?

it's just grainy and overall looks nothing like HD

I have regular channels and some HD channels and they look crap on both, even worse on non-HD

I have FiOS as far as channels are concerned so that can't be the problem

anyone known anybody who's had these problems?  this is the first TV we've had so we're pissed off

You need a HDMI cable, if you're using an old ass cable, you won't get true HD.
Instead, it will look shitty because the big ass TV will try to upscale the pictures, because the cable doesn't cut it.

They look like this: (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/be/High_Definition_Multimedia_Interface_Plug.jpg/150px-High_Definition_Multimedia_Interface_Plug.jpg)(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e2/HDMI_Logo.svg/151px-HDMI_Logo.svg.png)

And older programs will often look shitty, because they're made in low-res and not meant for widescreen, newer large quality TV's will brutally reveal that.

Btw: You can pick up HDMI cables pretty cheap, buying an expensive one is just a waste of money, because the signal is digital = it's the same picture either way..
Better have 1 HMDI cable for the sat dish or whatever you got, and 1 for the Playstation.. the difference is amazing.

older and lower quality stuff will always look bad because its a high-res lcd. plasma > lcd in every way, except electricity costs 8)

not sure why HD stuff would be poor unless you are using a composite/s-video cable or something...

yeah anything over 42 inch your better getting a plasma rather than a LCD, but i belive they are problems with plasma TV's for computer games? is that right? i heard the picture can burn on the screen when its paused or something. Have you tried a computer game on it?

the screen burn-in thing is a bit overhyped, even if your playing games and stuff. it'd be pretty much a non-issue on a quality up to date plasma and anything that burns-in generally comes out with a bit of normal viewing. if anyone thinks lcds can produce pictures as good as on a plasma they need their eyes checked. i actually have a lcd but always get into this argument with people.

plasmas have a far superior contrast ratio and black level, making the picture infinitely richer. motion handling is also a non-issue whereas lcds struggle and inevitably have some level of blur and fuzzyness, no matter how well it's disguised with processing. they also normally run at a lower native resolution than your average lcd and so standard definition comes out even nicer. i'd go as far as saying good SD material looks better on a plasma than HD does on a good LCD. there's that much difference imo...

yeah man you definitely need a HDMI in your life.

as far as LCD's are concerned, Sony is one of the best. It's not like you're fuckin' with a Westinghouse or something.

well he got the HDMI cable and the picture looks great on the HD channels

however the certain channels we need HD subscriptions for look awful, but I guess that's the way it is

also you have to remember HD doesn't always mean 1080p (progressive scan)  channels such as NBC  broadcast in 1080i format (interlaced) while others like CBS braodcast in 720p  different types of pictures, but both considered HD, but not FULL HD. also a lot of it has to do with how a show was originally recorded and meant to be broadcast.

my suggestion if you want to experience full HD is to get a bluray player in your life.
