Wow. In short it is the replacement for DVDs. Just like DVDs were the replacement for VHS.
It's basically a DVD with a lot more storage capacity. Which also leads to better video quality.

Ah okay. What's the size of these movies (like for DVD rip is around 700-800mb) ?

a blu-ray rip is typically between 4-8gb in size compressed, normally at 720p (1280x720 resolution) as opposed to full 1080p (1920x1080) as on a blu-ray disc. they said realistically hd movies wouldn't be piratable because they are so large in size. yeah right. i have a big collection of them downloaded -  they have digital 5.1 sound, everything. there are loads of groups who release blu-ray movies and hdtv rips. they are are great quality too using x264 video codec.

the x264 rip of the bluray 1080p movie is 16gb, that includes all the imax scenes etc also.

Seriously. For a second I thought you were being ironic. I don't expect everyone to know about the latest technology, but they've been promoting Blu-Ray for more than a year now I think.

My grandmom gave my family & I a present for Christmas: a Sony Bravia (full HD) plus a Sony Blu-Ray player. FUCK YEAH!
I went to store on Saturday and bought

- No Country For Old Men
- Gone Baby Gone
- Iron Man
- I Am Legend
- Transformers

I'm saving up to buy the Rambo quadrology 8) The last Rambo movie gets extremely good reviews on highdefdigest.com, in terms of picture quality on the blu-ray disc.
