Although refs have been getting on Bron for travels a lot more often nowadays, it is extremely rare for them to call him out during last minute action. It was slightly justifying that it was against the Wizards, since his two most infamous traveling no-calls occurred twice against Washington during the 2006 play-offs.
Here's the re-cap of the game to see the play (it starts at 1:58).

Last minute of the game from a camera in the stands.

"Bad call," said James, who compiled 30 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. "We all make mistakes, and I think I got the wrong end of the bargain. I watched it 10 times after the game, and it was clearly a good play."
Without raising his voice or getting particularly animated, James dissected the game's key sequence in extensive detail -- even pointing out that he felt he was fouled as he released the shot, which went in.
His biggest beef, though, was with what he considered a misunderstanding of the way he moved to the basket.
"You have your trademark play, and that's one of my plays. It kind of looks like a travel because it's slow, and it's kind of a high-step, but it's a one-two just as fluent as any other one-two in this league. I got the wrong end of it, but I think they need to look at it -- and they need to understand that's not a travel," James said. "It's a perfectly legal play, something I've always done."

NBA players travel all the time without getting called on it. Especially superstars. Many historic bigs even had travels in their signature moves that were never, ever called. Then there is also this unwritten rule that the refs don't call smaller things on last plays because they want the players to decide the game, that's why you can basically foul someone on the last play without him getting free-throws, so it is kind of natural that a tiny travel by a superstar is not to be called. A travel as blatant as this one can be called, don't get me wrong, I just dislike how Kobe-Fans act like LeBron is unique in that regard.

wtf is a travel play ?

I agree with what you said, up til the last sentence. LeBron isn't the only person who gets away with traveling, but out of any current superstar, he is the one person who typically gets pointed out for it the most by fans and analysts alike, as he was involved in the most infamous instance of a no-call for a travel, which is why I gave the thread this title. And what's this about Kobe fans? As far as I know, LeBron has never traveled against the Lakers on a last second play. Lakers haven't been fucked over in that regard... and I'm pretty sure Kobe fans are in the minority when you compare them to the fans of the teams who HAVE been fucked over. You're kidding yourself if you think it's some personal vendetta against LeBron that started in LA.
And yes, I realize NiK disses LeBron a lot. He's not the sole representative of Kobe fans.

wtf is a travel play ?
in this case, a last minute drive to the basket, a play in which lebron has traveled on numerous times. not exactly hard to figure out.
-
shits different here in europe lol, you get called everytime when you make a traveling violation

He got away with that exact same "trademark play" a few years ago in the playoffs vs Washington. Stop cryin Bron, you got away with it when it mattered the most.

just wait in 10 years lol :P
and the rules are kinda different over here then the NBA. FIBA rules huh.

i think you guys have look at the situation...
10 seconds left down by two & you get that call, its pretty ridiculous.
they do travel, but they have this pro-hop excuse & they can do what they want.
BAD CALL!

How is it ridiculous if he DID travel? LOL.
LeBron needs to stop bitching.. his signature moves are illegal in the rulebook and he has to accept that. D-Wade is the same. Maybe not as bad as LeBron, but these 2 players get away with traveling at least a couple times a game. In fact, LeBron traveled twice in those very highlights vs Washington without getting called. LOL.

well if its not traveling since the day he stepped foot in the league & theres a 80% chance it would not have been traveling in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd quarters & probably the start of the 4th too, lmao; it shouldnt be traveling with 10 seconds left & the game on the line.
i swear refs try to change the outcomes of games.

actually, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters are when they DO call traveling on lebron. they usually let him go in the 4th though.

I do agree. That is an European type of call, where they use to call everything they see on the court. But in the States they don't call this shit, so to do it on the last possession is just ridiculous.

You said it. He traveled twice in the highlights without getting called...... BUT THEY CALLED IT ON THE LAST POSSESSION.
That's just wrong. If he's allowed to make that move he should be allowed for 48 minutes, not for 47 and 50 seconds.
-
I disagree.
He got away with it enough, it was bound to get called eventually. Its his fault for not thinking like that.
-
Its his fault for not thinking like that.
How can a guy who makes the same play for 47 minutes and they don't call it a travel suddenly think it is a travel on the last possession of the game? It just doesn't make sense. If it is travel, it is travel from the very first time to the last. And if they want to "educate" LeBron, they should call it from the first possession to the last one. That way, he has no excuses but to change his style of play and to learn how do dribble properly. But to call only the last possession a travel play is just ridiculous.
-
Since we all watch the NBA, we all know that every player (especially the elite ones) get away with travels on the way to the hoop. I've always hated that about the NBA, and I wished they callled this shit more.
Having said the above, I agree with the guys who said that its BS to not call this shit and then call it on such a crucial play.
-
Well, i'm italian, european, and my father was an Euroleague ref, so nobody more than me can be happy if they start to call travel plays in the NBA. The fact is that they shouldn't call "more" travel plays. "More" means nothing. They should start calling EVERY travel play, in every game, and from the first minute to the last one. Otherwise they'll just remain hypocrities, and the bigs will continue to think the call was something personal, and not tecnical. The rule is clear: 3 steps = travels. Just apply it, or continue to ignore it on the last possession too.
-
lol chamill refs are always on brons side so this was a GOOD CALL for tht baby...sum1 pass him a few tissues
-
A call should be made the same, whether it's the first or last play of the game...just because the refs mess up for 47 minutes doesn't mean they should mess up even more in the last minute. i never got that whole "refs should let it go on the final play" philosophy. if it's a travel, CALL IT. this was a good call. 2 bad calls and 1 good call is better than 3 bad calls.

thank you Antonio for not being biased because of the man this is about.
if Kobe traveled (dont act like hes never or at least carried :-X) and it was called with the game on the line vs. the Celtics (just to spice it up lol), this board would be going nuts saying "THE REFS ARE GAMBLING AGAIN!"
but the number two man does it, who is often compared to Kobe (sometimes regarded as better), its the greatest call the leagues ever seen right? :) ;) ::)

Antonio knows whats up. cuz like NIK said, he travled already before that. so why wasnt it called until it was on the play that mattered? the difference between a win & a loss?
its just wrong, it cant be inconsistant. i expect it to be called everytime he does something like this now...
just cant be on and off. :nawty:

lmao so they should just go around not calling travels anymore?and it was only a key play for the cavs to win the game? what about the wizards. If its a violation and they see it then fucking call it. this is the dumbest argument ive seen on here. and turning it onto nik cause hes biased was the easy move to so maybe ill do it.
So lets say this lebron goes and hits the game winner against ur 76s but he traveled and it gets called back. you gunna go and write the nba a letter about ' o lebron should get away with those, hes the greatest bllah blah'. i mean come on man.
-
dude, a travel is a fuckin travel. when kobe travels, they need to call that shit. when lebron travels, they need to call that shit. nobody is exempt. yes, bron has gotten away with that same travel move for years (in the clutch, at least). yes, the refs are stupid for not calling it back then. doesn't mean they should permanently change the rules just because bron is used to getting away with traveling. any time they miss a call like that, ESPECIALLY a game-deciding one, they're going to look more and more retarded
-

Like i said, the rule is simple: 3 steps = travels. What NBA refs do is just wrong, imho. They intentionally chose when to call them and when to ignore them. If there's a big player going inside, they usually ignore travels and offensive fouls, cause they "protect superstars". Everybody knows that. And, if the game is on the line, they usually ignore everything in the last possession letting the player with the ball decide the game on his own (remember Jordan's offensive foul on Russell?). Imho this is wrong. I'm not talking about LeBron in here, you homies are just taking it personal going all out against him. I'm not. I'm talking about the rule and the way NBA refs apply it.
They should chose if they want to call travels everytime or just ignore them. And you know why? It's simple. Cause American/NBA player who come here in Europe to play, at the beginning they don't know how to dribble without making travels. They call travels against them like in every possession. Then european coaches teachs them how to dribble properly, and they learn it. But to force them to learn the fundamentals, the refs needs to call every possession, from the first one to the last. If they continue with the "superstar treatment" ignoring travels, them superstars will never learn. Cause they simply don't have to. And when they call it a travel on the last possession of the game, they start crying and blaming it on the refs.
Change the mentality. NBA players can learn too. If a white/european/South American dude can learn it, a black american player can learn it too. And i'm not being racist, don't get me wrong.
and it was only a key play for the cavs to win the game? what about the wizards. If its a violation and they see it then fucking call it. this is the dumbest argument ive seen on here. and turning it onto nik cause hes biased was the easy move to so maybe ill do it.

^LOL...the refs supposedly aren't missing these calls on purpose. theyre missing it because theyre incompetent (according to them). theres absolutely NO REASON lebron should get away with this, on ANY possession.
LMAO@cham in this thread.
-
^why, because you guys are just blind to the truth?
if he did the same move in the first quarter, third quarter & the refs didnt call it then, but then in the 4th with 10 seconds left; how does that make sense?
whats going through the refs mind? basically baiting LeBron?
"well LeBron, you can do it when it doesnt mean anything; think its legal, go ahead; we'll get you when it matters! :firedevil:"
"In fact, LeBron traveled twice in those very highlights vs Washington without getting called. LOL." (direct quote from NIK lol).
well why werent they called? how can you let some go & some not?
if they let it pass then, you have to let them all pass, unless its absoluetly ridiculous.
if LeBron did nothing that was close to a travel all game & then they called that one with 10 seconds left, thats acceptable. but once you establish what is legal & dont make the call (twice apperently) you cant just say "we changed our minds" lmao.
if you guys dont understand me then its OBVIOUS i am just getting molested by a bunch of Laker fans who hate LeBron to death.

^LOL...the refs supposedly aren't missing these calls on purpose. theyre missing it because theyre incompetent (according to them).
LMAO. Are you serious? I mean do you really think they are incompetent so much that they don't see those cristalline travel plays? You are not a professional ref, but yet you can see them easly. Immagine a professional ref! C'mon, let's be serious. Do you mean all the refs from all over the world are better than NBA refs? All the 40 refs from Italy are better than the NBA elite refs? Even refs from Lithuania, Spain, France, Greece, Turkey, Israel, ecc.. are better than the NBA refs? Cause they call every travels in the rest of the world. Every single one. C'mon man, use your brain. They are just lying. They simply ignore travels to protect the "show" cause the NBA wants them to ignore travel plays. If LeBron makes a reverse dunk after a travel play, they simply ignore the travel play. Simple as that. If a team makes great zonal defence and stops opponents from penetrations and spectacular plays, they simply make zonal defence illegal. If defenders learn how to take charges under the basket to stop people from penetrating and dunking, they just make it illegal to take charges in the half-circle under the basket. They do everything to make NBA spectacular. And not calling travels, 3 seconds, etc.. is just a part of it.
theres absolutely NO REASON lebron should get away with this, on ANY possession.
That's exactly what i'm saying. It is a travel, plain and simple. But NBA refs should stop being hypocrities and they should call it from the first action to the last.
-

-
Cham and antonio. go watch the globe trotters or something if you dont want travels called.
LMAO. You're acting like the NBA is the place where refs call travels!!! That's fantastic, for real. I'm dying rolling on the floor!! I can see an NBA game and count at least 20-30 travels ignored per quarter. If you want, i can make a topic like the one i opened about the "NBA great battles", analyzing action-by-action a single NBA game, counting all the travels ignored. No joke. Basically 90% of the times an NBA player starts moving with the ball it's travel. Plus 90% of the Centers and Power Forwards don't know how to make simple moves with the feet, and guards don't know how to finish a dribble properly without making travels. Everybody knows that. Ask 7even. Ask wcsoldier. Ask people from Europe. To think the problem is that NBA refs are incompetent is just ridiculous, cause if i can see them, they can see them too. And cause if that's the problem, they just have to replace them with refs from Europe. The truth is - like i said - that:
1) NBA players don't know simple fundamentals no more
2) The NBA doesn't want to stop the game every 10 seconds to call a violation
3) They don't want LeBron to look like a fool, making 10 travels per game
So they ignore them, calling 1 out of 10 travels (just the worst ones). Just look at an European game with a newly acquired NBA player playing there. He makes 8-9 travels (i mean they call him travels 7-6 times) per game till he learn how to move the feet correctly and he stops doing a wrong movement. Put LeBron in Europe and he averages 20 travels called per game, if not more. Cause he doesn't know how to dribble without making travels. He doesn't know fundamentals. That's the problem.
I don't want NBA refs to ignore travels (like you said). I'm saying the opposite. I want NBA refs to call EACH ONE OF THEM. From the first minute to the last. If they ignore 80 situations in a game and they only call the 81st one, they are just hypocrities. Simple as that. It's a good call, but they are hypocrities.
-
damn james one of my favorite but that looks like he is-travelin
-
The problem is, that all the players have been conditioned to travel. Cause if you can travel without a whistle being blown, you have an advantage. Why the hell would you try your hardest not to travel, if you can be a more effective scorer if you do? I would do the exact same shit if I were LeBron, or any player who gets away with it for that matter. So if now all of a sudden the league would decide to call every tiny travel, the consequences would be crazy, cause some players would have to change their style of play drastically, while becoming less spectacular and less effective in the process.
-
^ The problem with that is the fact that players AREN'T conditioned to travel. LeBron might be used to getting away with it, but I highly doubt Mike Brown goes to LeBron during time-outs and says, "Hey LeBron, on this last play, I want you to drive to the basket. Feel free to travel, the refs probably won't call it." Especially considering that after the 2006 play-offs, all the sports programs were pointing out that LeBron got away with traveling. So if anything, I would think Bron would be under advisement to be more careful when it comes to traveling.
Yes, LeBron has gotten away with it several times in his young career, including key moments such as in this particular game. Like several people already stated, that sure as fuck does not mean he should continue doing it. It just means he should praise the Lord that he didn't get caught, and STOP doing it.
Now I do realize that the refs are to blame for LeBron's mentality when it comes to traveling, but can you guys just stop and think about what you're arguing for a second? You're literally justifying that players should get away with illegal moves just because they have in the past. That's like saying the refs should let Bruce Bowen get away with his dirty ass defense, considering that the reason he still does it is because he's gotten away with it in the past.
Bottom line is that the Wizards never traveled on crucial plays against the Cavs, and Cavs should not be given a fuckin advantage in this department.
-
yo antonio, no shit refs miss tons of calls each week. its like the nfl, theres a holding call on every play but it doesnt always get called. its a matter of if u see the foul or violation then you should call it. its u saayin that a ref should see the travel and not do anything is wat makes me question u.
-

The calls have to be consistent, which ever way it is. Either call nothing, or call everything. If I'm the player and my traveling gets never called, I damn sure am going to travel in the last play. It's an advantage. My offense is stronger when I can do more steps with the ball. It's silly to not call travels until the last play and then decide the game by calling it. The problem is the consistency.
Anyways, if any travel was to be called now, you guys would probably complain how the refs are trigger-happy with the whistle and take the flow out of the game.
-
Anyways, if any travel was to be called now, you guys would probably complain how the refs are trigger-happy with the whistle and take the flow out of the game.
Not really. Unlike fouls, a travel is a call that is NOT subjective. Notice how nobody, not even Cavs fans, are actually arguing that it wasn't a travel.
The reason people complain about how much refs blow whistles on fouls is because those actually are subjective, and thus bias/influence can actually be seen in the refs' calls. Plus the fact that the league really is softer nowadays.

No doubt. But from what i've seen here in Europe, after a couple of months american players (coming from the NBA) learn how to dribble properly. If they really want to do it, they'll just have some problems in the first couple of months, but the advantages are that: 1- players will learn fundamentals, 2- U.S. National team will not struggle in International competitions anymore, 3- more NBA players could play in Europe, and viceversa, with less problems of adaptation. I'm not a fan of NBA not adopting FIBA rules. They should just adopt FIBA rules cause basketball should have the same rules all over the world, like soccer, volley and other major global sports.
Hold on, i'm not saying that. I'm saying that it was hypocrite for the refs to call a travel play on LeBron on the last possession of the game when they intentionally ignored at least a dozen of other travel plays done by LeBron before the last one. The call was right, but the ref was hypocrite. What i'm asking is the NBA refs to call travels on EVERY single possession, so when they call it on the last one, they won't look so hypocrite.
yo antonio, no shit refs miss tons of calls each week. its like the nfl, theres a holding call on every play but it doesnt always get called. its a matter of if u see the foul or violation then you should call it. its u saayin that a ref should see the travel and not do anything is wat makes me question u.
Naw, if it's travel it's travel, and you have to call it. What i don't drink is the fact NBA refs are just incompetent. No, they intentionally ignore some situations. And they intentionally didn't ignore the last possession. That's wrong. Cause refs shouldn't decide a game. Refs gotta call travel player EVERY TIME THERE'S ONE, and not just when they feel is ok to call it.
Exactly, again.
Anyways, if any travel was to be called now, you guys would probably complain how the refs are trigger-happy with the whistle and take the flow out of the game.
That's why they don't call it on every possession. But it's wrong. I'm sure an american dude can't watch an European game for more than 10 minutes anyway.

If so, we both should agree that it was wrong to INTENTIONALLY ignore all the travel plays done by LeBron till the one of the last possession. And refs should have called them. Do you?

Of course I agree that it's wrong to intentionally ignore a travel play. Traveling is illegal and you have to call it. From the first possession to the last possession.
But whether or not they're really ignoring travel plays intentionally is debatable. This whole time I thought the refs were just incompetent, but who knows.

This is a travel simple and plain ... the Cavs and Lebron should not said a word .... he get away with travel on TWO GAME WINNERS in the FUCKIN PLAYOFFS against the Wizards in 2006 ..

haha he went at lebron and lebron didnt reply back
but jay-z did

money. refs are retarded. it's not like the concept of them allowing travels is accepted. as far as the rules go, they should be calling every single one.

Naw it's not. Refs knows how to see a travel play (actually an amateur ref here can see them, and i'm not even talking about pro's). And i know what i'm talking about since my father used to be an Euroleague/FIBA ref, and he went to the States too, to refs the Military Games (or something like that), and american (NBA) refs knew the rules. They just intentionally ignore most of them, cause the NBA wants the game to be more spectacular than in Europe. Stern's call. That's the truth. And that's why i'm calling them hypocrities.
Anyway.. it's enought. It was a travel play, it's all good, Cavs didn't steal the game.
