So with this song from Nikki Grier we heard another R&B song produced by Dr. Dre. I took a look in The Vault and made a list of R&B songs that Dre did:
Bilal
Fast Lane
Sally
feat. Jadakiss & Dr.Dre - Fast Lane remix
Brooklyn
Rich Girl
D'Angelo
Chicken Grease (Dr.Dre remix) (Unreleased)
Gwen Stefani
feat. Eve - Rich Girl
Jewell (See Also Dr.Dre, Snoop Dogg)
Harvest For The World
feat. Lady of Rage - Love Or lust
Mary J. Blige (See Also Busta Rhymes, Dr.Dre)
Family Affair
Not Today feat. Eve
feat. Dr.Dre, Fabolous & Jadakiss - Family Affair remix
Michel'le
Album: Michel'le - Michel'le
(http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/120/125581.jpg)
1 No More Lies
2 Nicety feat. Dr.Dre
3 If?
4 Keep Watchin'
5 Something In My Heart
6 100% Woman
7 Silly Love Songs
8 Never Been In Love
9 Close To Me
10 Special Thanks
11 If? (reprise)
Nicety remix
Nate Dogg (See Also Dr.Dre, Eminem, Hittman, Knoc, Melloe Won, Obie Trice, Snoop Dogg, Warren G)
Leave It Alone
feat. Dr.Dre - Your Wife
Nikki Grier
Any Day Now
Truth Hurts (See Also Dr.Dre, D-12, Eve, Jay-Z, Xzibit)
Jimmy
feat. Dr.Dre - Push Play
feat. Kittie a.k.a. Cita - Queen Of The Ghetto
feat. Rakim - Addictive Remix
Michel'le's album is nice, but not outstanding. I also like Bilal's "Fast Lane" joint a lot as well as that "Addictive" joint from Truth Hurts, but the rest is is either not good or it's not anything above average. To me he's never been the top producer as he is (or used to be actually) in hip hop. To me he's good at best in R&B.
What is everyone's opinion on Dr. Dre as an R&B producer?
-
great post, gonna start to look for those:)
-
Agreed. It's not really his thing.
-
thats why kanye is a better producer
-
anyone got the D'Angelo remix???
i'd say dre does some interesting tracks but whether they are true r&b is another thing. there's certainly a lot more tracks he's done with a r&b vibe that you haven't got on that list though. i'd say dre's 'r&b' tracks range pretty much fall into 3 categories - dramatic/sombre, smooth/jazzy and pop/club r&b.
he's done the pop/club r&b pretty damn well, i think 'family affair' is a real mix of genres and one of the all time best club tracks with a r&b edge. i don't think there's any doubt that quik can do pure r&b better because of his smooth sound but dre's stuff that crosses over into this area are really interesting experiments.
his crisp, hard sound is normally a juxtaposition to singers that works really well to bring out the melody. i just think of all those classic dre beats that nate dogg is singing on. i can dig most of the tracks on that list ;]

I don't think it ever came out...

That song got old after 5 spins, lol

That says more about Nate Dogg than about Dre.
-
Pretty well i think. he's already a musical producer so his fits for r&b.
some folks may expect him to be like ryan leslie on it but Dre is Dre. Just like Timberland r&b is not that different from his rap stuff. However Dre does ballads. he works with musicians so it's easy for him.
Don't forget Nikki Grier "Incredible". That track is SICK. "Something in my Heart is classic stuff.
Nontheless, haters will say he sucks. woo woo woo. Wait for em to assert it shortly in this thread. ::)
-
Dre can do R&B; Aftermath compilation beats and the ones off the 'Exclusive' bootleg were tight.
He's not as groundbreaking in R&B as he is in hip hop and that counts against him.
-
The beats he did for Truth Hurts (at least 2 of them) & Mary J. was top notch, but the rest feels like he's handing out the leftovers..
Don't think he really wanted to enter the r'n'b-market with full strength, Truth Hurts smells like Jimmy's idea, and Dre just gave her some beats & hooked up some producers..
Dre isn't about soft/slow love-songs about making sweet love under the apple-tree, he's about thumping bangers with hard bass-lines.. and preferably Nate on a gangsta-hook.
-
Didn't Dre have a girl R&B group back in the late 80's early 90's? I thought he had a hit with JJ Fad or a group like that. Dre seems to do better on the uptempo R&B tracks.
-
well we know that marsha has recorded a whole album with him (probably dozens of tracks) so if we ever get to hear some of that stuff it will be interesting.
-
He did a lot for R&B in the late 80's. He was one of the first to put R&B on hard hip hop beats with Michel'le.
-
I think Dre did a good bit of helping with the R & B work on his Aftermath compilation which Mel-Man, Glove, and others did with him. The stuff he helped make was pretty good on the album which was R & B. It had that dark feel to it. The other R & B stuff that he's done.....I didn't really like the tracks that much.

plus jewell cuts.
-
You think Family Affair is average? Thats one of my fav Dre beats
-
You think Family Affair is average?
Yes, sir.

yeah i think the stuff he makes that's not too "typical" R&B is cool ;)
-
I think Dre is alright!!
I've enjoyed a few of his records in the R&B genre..I know that if he were to concentrate on that, he will probably master it!!
I see Dre doing more Acoustical soulful R&B, more so than the progressive R&B/Techno blend that seems to be prevalent in todays' Music world

Yeah, I mean the R&B as it used to be known (in the 90s anyway); smooth soulful music, to get jiggy to. I'm thinkin Jodeci and that era.
Rihanna, Justin, Usher, that's not RnB, that's pop for the 'urban' market.
-
there are quite a few producers who are much better than dre when it comes to rnb...they got the sound/vibe to their beats that fit the genre better.
Dre makes some good old school laid back soul sorta rnb where its more vocals but dre is more suited for hiphop. Don't get me wrong though, dude made some heat too, it is dre after all.
pz
-
Rich Girl was a pretty massive hit, and "Satisfaction" by Eve had an RNB feel to it, that beat went hard. Family Affair is sick too. Anyone got a copy of the other track he made for Mary J?...
-
Not his forté (sp?). He has some dope R&B beats (the ones mentioned, Family Affair, Fastlane etc). But most are nice, but nothing outstanding.
-
The beat that he did for Bilal is one of my favorite beats from dre. Some of the other r&b beats he did were tight too
Would like to hear some tracks that were produced for jewell or michel'le from the death row days

D'Angelo
Chicken Grease (Dr.Dre remix) (Unreleased)
Anybody have this?
-
Sally
feat. Jadakiss & Dr.Dre - Fast Lane remix
can some one post it up?
-
I suppose it depends on if the singer's style fits with loud snares and rolling bass lines.

well homie this all depends on how that r&b artist flips the track....i know dj primier is not a r&b producers, but damn!!he made christiana do wonders on her new album(back to basics).....oh and dre did not do ADDICTIVE...(dj quick) did....correct the facts homie.
-
once again dre did not do addictiv..its a dj quick production....damn!yall give dre credit even if he did not do shit. :-\

Yeah I used to have this song, shit goes hard I reckon, Dre and Mary have amazing chemistry, she sounds so at home over gangster beats like that
-
Dre's pretty good as an R&B producer, I think. Not his greatest works, but good. The stuff he's done with Mary J. is probably the best he's done in the field. Dre's definately better at producing raps though.
-
His production is great on Black Diamond.
