Title: Is Universal Trying To Put The Smackdown On Wayne's 'Rebirth"?
Post by: Elano on February 27, 2009, 06:39:39 AM
Could Wayne's new album "The Rebirth" be in trouble? That's the new word I'm hearing from various sources.

It seems as though Weazy's record label isn't happy with the project, which has been pushed back from April 7th to May 9th.

Word is the top executives at Universal think that this rock album is going to be a HUGE failure and would make the rap world look at Wayne even more sideways than most of us already do. Apparently top execs at Universal have tried to talk to Wayne several times to explain to him that this album is not a reality, but of course those convos are to no avail.

Word is that they let his manager, Cortez Bryant, know that if Wayne doesn't see the bigger picture, they will have to turn into  the evil record company and just tell him it's never going to be released.

No disrespect to Wayne, but I think Universal has a point. Who's gonna buy this ish?

(sohh)

I wanna see it put out there.

i don't c how they're possibly worried about sales.  just bcuz he sold 3 milli on tha last junt doesn't mean he'll do it again (even if Dr. Dre & Quincy Jones produced the album top to bottom).  i know i would want to hear wat it sounds like.  it's either gonna get play or no play, it's not like tha album is gonna hurt his image- if anything it'll expand his image.  "flop" or not, Lil' Wayne is too big for a "flop".

This album would sell regardless of its quality.

Relatedly, 'Tha Carter III' is much, much better than most people give it credit for. Fact.

3,000,000 + people gave it credit, it's just dubcc.com & allhiphop.com who hate on it

Carter 3 was ok but I liked Carter 2 much better.that being said I'm surprised they would do this considering kanye took such a big a chance and commercially it was successful

i think it would sell, but a rap album would sell even better.

but Wayne is at that point where what he says goes & if he really wants this out, it will be put out.

i have to agree with the label. That prom queen song is beyond bad.  Just let him release the album digitaly, like radiohead did with their last album.

yeah it is bad to a hip hop fan & probably rock fans lol, but if Lil' Wayne fans like it, nobody else cares.

lets be real, didnt you think that Tha Carter III was beyond bad? so rap, rock, autotune or just singing, most arent going to like it lol.

if by some miracle Universal somehow gets Wayne to put a hold off on this album, if i were Wayne i would try to get a mixed album of rap & "rock".

I wish he would just stick all the rock and auto tune on one album and come back with a strictly hip hop album.I still hope kanye comes back but who knows.auto tune is the new crack.mother fuckers try it once and they think they can't live without it

Exactly, it doesn't mean he'll ever sell 3 million again, that is why the record company wants to make sure they are putting out a solid product.   It's not about hurting his image, it's about selling records.  Everyday Lil Wayne records music, it's being payed for by the record company.  If the company knows they aren't going to make their money back in the stores with the current product, why wouldn't they tell the artist to make something more appealling?

Is Lil Wayne expanding his horizons and expressing true artistic from?  Yes.  Is he making something he wants to make, and not conforming to "the norm"?  Yes.  Is this project a record label's wetdream?  No.

honestly, i dont know what to think about that...

because, clearly they arent going to be putting out rap & they know it.

they have plenty of potential to put out good music, esspecially if they have some Kanye beats! :o

might actually be looking somewhat forward to this.

It's hard to tell will Wayne's Rebirth fail. The single Prom Queer is objectively said horrid shit, but that's what I thought of Kanye's Love Lockdown and I didn't believe that 808's & Heartbreak would sell shit but to my surprise it was both commercial and a critical success. Perhaps this will be a success too but only because it's trendy to have Little Wayne in your iPod. No doubt there'll be a bunch of sheep who'll buy Rebirth just to stay hip.

This move by wayne makes as much sense as MJ leaving Basketball and going to Baseball... My prediction? the album will sell juuuust enough to make universal break-even. Wayne will realize that he's not that good @ rock, go back to hiphop, meet secretly with t-pain and have his voicebox surgically replaced with autotune..... :o

While no official word has come out yet detailing a confirmation, MTV has reported that Lil Wayne’s Rock-inspired album, Rebirth, will not be coming out on May 19th. A label spokesperson, who spoke with MTV News, said that the album’s release date is now “TBD.”

Industry rumors swirled that Rebirth’s first single “Prom Queen” was not receiving the predicted buzz to push enough sales come release day. With over a month in radio rotation, “Prom Queen” has peaked at #15 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Likewise, Rolling Stone reportedly got a sneak peek of a handful of tracks from Rebirth. While the magazines words were more or less positive, Wayne’s manager Cortez Bryant was quoted as saying, “He’s still trying to give me tracks,” implying that the album is still not set in stone.

This has not been the first time Lil Wayne’s Rebirth got pushed back. The album was originally supposed to drop April 7th, but on February 19th, Wayne explained to MTV that his Rock-manifested album would come out May 19th. Currently, only the “Prom Queen” single and music video have been released to promote Rebirth
