AZ Alkmaar goalkeeper Sergio Romero breaks hand
updated 4:42 a.m. AKT, Fri., March. 6, 2009
AMSTERDAM - Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero broke his hand punching a wall in frustration Thursday night after AZ Alkmaar's 2-1 Dutch Cup quarterfinal defeat by NAC Breda, the club announced.
Romero, who won a gold medal with Argentina at the Beijing Olympics, was furious at himself for allowing a shot to slip through his hands for NAC's equalizer.
"He took his frustrations out on a changing room wall," the club said Friday on its Web site. It was not immediately clear how long Romero will be out of action.
AZ leads the Dutch Eredivisie league by nine points from FC Twente and appears on course for only its second league title. It was crowned Dutch champion in 1981.
Romero has been a key player for AZ this season, keeping 21 clean sheets in the league and cup.
