Title: Dr. Dre Death Row Material
Post by: _That_Cracka_J on March 25, 2009, 04:35:05 PM
So I remember a few years ago when Suge was releasing all the old Death Row shit he was trying to release Dre's unreleased shit, but Dre sued him and Suge was then only able to release already available material.  Did that only apply to Suge releasing them....does that mean that this new owner of the recordings can release Dre's shit or does that injunction still apply?

It probably depends on what the paperwork says and how it's interpreted.

I always thought that since Dr. Dre left Death Row like he did that he didn't own the copyrights anymore.

I think they were allowed to release Dre's unreleased stuff, but they couldn't alter it in any way. They changed all those songs for Chronic 2000 by adding the new artists on the tracks so that is why it was pulled.

I think Dre only enforced it to prevent Suge from making money off his shit, I think as long as WIDEawake stays straight forward in their business dealings he wont have a problem with it. Lets face it if you start a label witta nigga, and the nigga starts taking over more and more to the point you leave and leave all your shit behind, you wouldnt be cool with the nigga making money off of you either.

If that was really the case then I guess those songs would have been released a long time ago.

The story was always told like he "left Death Row with nothing". I assumed that meant he surrendered his masters, his publishing, and any profits made off either. Apparently, not the case. From all the bankruptcy news stories, I gather that he was actually still making money off his Death Row material and still had publishing rights to it. He seemed like he was good with Death Row until about early 2000 when they started going heavy with the gay rumors and making videos with directions to his house.

it all depends on whether they're going to negotiate.

They made a deal - Dre left all his shares in Death Row to Suge but he got away with his publishing rights. That's what I've heard...
