WIDEawake/Death Row Entertainment LLC announces a hot offer to all rap, urban and hip-hop music lovers. The company has issued a free Death Row “Record Store Day” CD sampler to be given away exclusively at over 750 participating retailers in the U.S. on Record Store Day, April 18, 2009. This special free CD offer is redeemable exclusively on Record Store Day 2009 and at participating Record Store Day retailers only. All three songs are never before heard Death Row music from the Death Row Vault. Fans can then log on to TRYSOMETHINGNEW.TV to download a free ringtone of another unreleased, new song.
The Death Row sampler celebrates the return of one of the most influential music catalogs at retail and features tracks by classic Death Row artists Petey Pablo “Pay for the Pu**y,” Crooked I “Hoodstar” and Danny Boy “Do What You Do.” The CD artwork will include a special link for fans to download an additional free exclusive bonus ringtone and sign up for more info on the new and highly artist and fan friendly Death Row Records.
WIDEawake Entertainment Group acquired the Death Row catalog in early 2009. Only 10% of the music, videos, and artwork of this extraordinary catalog has ever come to market. The company is now free to open these vaults and plans to release the best of the best in North America via its exclusive distribution deal with E1 Entertainment Distribution throughout North America. Forthcoming titles will be officially announced by the label in the near future.

I think this a bad move that will draw no interest for a Death Row comeback. I mean why would they release artist that's not known for the Death Row legacy? Crooked doesn't even count. He's known as just was signed to the Row, but never released a project.
Danny is cool but not relevant anymore, far as a Death Row artist.
Why didn't they release some classic Dre stuff, Snoop or Dogg Pound? Even 2Pac will not work much cause we get a new Pac song every year so that woould NOT move anyone. Fans can just wait on Pac's mom to drop an album including Lil Wayne (lol), except if there's a Pac with some DPG or something.
Bad move. I'll holla at them when they release something from the original inmates.
-
I don't even think this counts as a move. There's going to be so few of these things in circulation, I don't think very many people will even know about it. Probably the best thing they can hope for is that when it gets ripped onto the internet (as it inevitably will), people might talk a little about there being a couple new Death Row songs out. Other than that, I personally don't think this will do much to help them or hurt them. In my opinion what is ultimately going to hurt them a lot more is if they continue to try to run Death Row without a website. I think that would be poor judgement.

Great! I found a legitimate excuse to download and not pay for any of this :monkey_dance2:

At least they are doing something....3 songs are better than nothing. It's a start. At least we know they are serious about putting out Crooked I, Danny Boy and Petey. I'm not too thrilled about Petey, but i'll pick up the other two Death Row releases when that happens. Won't be too long before SHTTBG is out there. Those bootleggers better try to get their money while they still can.

How many X's do we have to buy "Nuthin' But A "G" Thang"...lol
I mean shit, I know I've been bumpin' it since 92 or whatever...
but The Death Row Classics need a rest for a while, Got G thang on my iPod like 100x with all the comp's DR put out..lol

Yeah. And I think part of the reason we're getting these 3 artists on this sampler is because these are artists that they have had a chance to sit down with and work out deals. Laura Lavi has stated that she's already spoken with Crooked I and Petey Pablo. And I've heard rumors that they've also spoken with Danny Boy. So there is some logic in them putting out material from these three artists. They didn't choose their names out of a hat, I wouldn't imagine.

Had a Petey DR album been released late 2004/early 2005 with a decent distribution deal and promotion and a song like Way Out There as a single, it could have actually been a succes.
And Petey was never signed.
-
looking forward to this getting ripped as no other way i will be able to get a copy.

Technically, no.
But there is "Death Row Entertainment LLC"
-
I thought hoodstar was a potential single for crooked I back when shttbg was going to be released I'm looking forward to hearing that song
and for free is a good move it generates interest without giving away too much but still enough for people to go cop it.
-
My guess is the selection is based on what they can release free and clear on the fly. Artists like Petey Pablo, Crooked and Danny Boy seemed to all have straightforward artist contracts and they're probably the least disgruntled of all ex artists. Just my guess... how else could you explain the retartedness of this sampler when they have like 8 albums worth of Dre/DPG 92-95 era songs and over 40 2pac records just collecting dust.
If they wanted to get people excited about hearing unreleased Deathrow music from its prime you'd think the best way to do that is to put THAT on a sampler... not some shitty Petey Pablo song that no one cares about. Oh well.
-
Just as a heads up, I contacted every local store that is on the list for recordstore day and not one of them has the sampler nor will they be getting it in.
