I know it's dumb to make a statement like that and act as if its fact, but I truly feel it is fact. Every other single rapper who is brought up in this discussion has a blemish on their discography. Scarface has not 1. If not all classic albums, all near classics at the very least. And that's his solo discography. Shall we bring up the Geto Boyz? Nobody has been apart of as much classic Hip-Hop as Scarface has, without a single blemish. Don't forget The Product album a few years ago, another classic or near classic.
Due to his extensive discography without a single less than quality release, Scarface truly is the greatest rapper to ever live - the collection proves that imo.
y'all always talkin' about me and T.I. lol, when truly, Face is my favorite.

It depends what you're basing it on. His discography may have no major fail in it but there are average albums within it (Emeritus was good but not anything above average). The thing with him is that he never went for huge mainstream success so he doesn't really have the corny albums that may tarnish someone like LL or Nas' discographies but the lack of imagination or formulaic approach to some of his albums doesn't make the anything special.
Dude is a legend but if I had to choose between him and Cube i'd take Cube all day everyday.

Emeritus?!? that was great way to close his career. 9/10 album imo. The only tracks I didn't like were High Note and We Need You. Everything else is pure fire. Well it's artists like LL and Nas' fault they went for the mainstream success and tarnished their own discographies. They brought that upon themselves. That's an excuse imo, the consequences they decided to roll with. Thankfully, Face sold his good amount of records without having to do that crap.
Face > Cube imo and I LOVE Cube. Face doesn't have a single album as weak as both the War & Peace releases.

He doesn't have a a really weak album (although i dont think neither war and peaces are weak) but i'd say hes formulaic and hence sometimes a bit average for him. In contrast Cube pushed the boundary and switched it up every album from Straight Outta Compton all the way up to Lethal Injection. He has the classics that Scarface doesn't have imo Everybody has their own opnion and although The Diary is a classic i wouldn't say its top 5 and on the whole i've seen it in very few top 5s. Death Certificate or Amerikkkas Most wanted are real defining moments and on the whole put Cube above Scarface imo. Although sayin that i havent listened to every geto boy album or every scaraface track.

Yeah. Face did a ton of co production on Untouchable. That album is probably his most slept on other than his first 2.

Yea, Face be a dope producer, lots of ppl don't realize. He did 3 joints on that UGK double disc self titled album. "Untouchable" is my personal favorite Face album. His 2nd is actually my worse imo, or maybe The Fix.

Love his 2nd album, the dope thing about Face is for the most part lyrically there is a steady progression in his music album to album. If I was put on the spot to pick my favorite it would have to be Last Of A Dying Breed probably.
-
Face is actually my 2nd fav. rapper of all time (behind Pac, of course). Pac could just touch a man's soul with his lyrics like no one else could. Face can do this too, but not like Pac. Love Face and his timeless music (one of the hardest to ever touch the mic). Like Pac, Andre 3000, Nas, Slick Rick, GZA, Ghostface, Raekwon, Biggie/ Face is also great at the Art Of Storytelling.

Last of a Dying Breed is definitely a slept on album of his. I love this guy's disco lol. It does get better and better, lyrical progression always. Face is the truth.

Face is also great at the Art Of Storytelling.
Face's art of storytelling is slept on. The best story teller from the south ever imo.
Man all this Face talk is making me badly wanna do a new interview with his group, The Product.

Face dreams he was the greatest rapper.
Just because YOU believe he has all classic albums doesn't make it so. And even if he did have a perfect discography, it still doesn't mean shit because there are better rappers. Face is good, but his rhymes aren't very complex and there are far better lyricists out there.
-
IMO his last albums aren't that great :-\
But he's definitely one of the best and has dropped a lot of classics with the Geto Boys and solo...

You didn't like Emeritus?

iīm glad iīm not the only one on here thatīs a Face head. the thing about Face thatīs unique is the technically heīs not really a great rapper but his subject matter, beat selection, voice and song writing abilities are on another level. when it comes to to pure lyrical skills heīs not even the best in Houston IMO coz thatīs Ro but the big difference is that Face albums are always jamming and Ro stay dropping average shit.
-
2 things to mention about scarface (recent stuff anyway) for instance I had never heard a full scarface album until I heard the Fix. For me scarface is obviously a good lyricist, is obviously able to express himself and drawn in the listener with his introspective lyrics but his voice gets irritating and furthermore he can't really flow. It is the production and his lyrics which carry the album and it is a very listenable album but in my opinion really tails off after track 8. The reason why I listened to this album is obviously I have heard him before on various collabos but as this album was mentioned as a modern day rap classic, I had to listen to it myself. I think what I am likely to find is that scarface is consistent but the beats need to fit around him, he can't fit around the beats. However for that very reason, I don't think he can be described as great. In addition to which, he isn't going to dazzle anyone with wit, with punch lines, with metaphors, so I genuinely don't think he can be described as a classic.

..i know if if was a 5th we'd all be fucked...
but if k had the handouts that face had comin up... face wouldnt even be a factor
everybody face done been with had connection from j to troy he aint have to go thru the struggles k-rino has..
i heard a long time ago.. big mello when he was on rap-a-lot.. was the only nigga to not have ft's from anyone.. kuz they aint wanna let him put k-rino on bone hard or wegonefunk.. forgot which one it was..
hell thinkin bout it.. the 2 cats affiliated with spc.. and rap-a-lot..k-rino wasnt on anyone of their albums...
kinda crazy...
k-rino a lil bit too deep for some tho... that nigga makes u go back n google shit..

k-rino is defintly slept on,dude is tight as fuck. but,let me ask you; you're saying, that if rino got beats from mike dean,n.o joe and john bido he would be recongnized as one of the best?
-
Rino is dope but he is missing somethin for me that doesn't put him in the same league as face. Face has a certain presence on the mic, similar to 2Pac. When he raps, something just makes you listen and take it all in. Rino doesn't have that IMO.

beats dont really matter.. if he had dean, bido nem or not.. it wouldnt matter.. if he had the money put behind him
like face has..or had.. he would get recognized as the best
face never had2 come outta pockets to get pressed up
or picnics or make sacrifices
he has always been spoiled.. if it wasnt lil j bread.. it was troy licks he was hittin n the bird money he was flippin
man if big mello was still around.. u would be upset over the struggles him n k went thru he'd tell ya..rino dont talk about it...mello will tell u straight up

Nah I disagree. First, I could never call someone the GOAT. You can break shit down w/ different eras, and maybe come up w/ a top 10 for each era, but I think it's impossible to pick a greatest. Kinda like comparing great athletes of today w/ athletes 40 years ago - apples and oranges.
Like how up on game are you on Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Caz, Kurtis Blow, etc? What about BDK, KRS, Juice Crew, Ultramagnetic, Rakim, Slick Rick?
That's no diss at all, I just know you are a younger cat and likely haven't gotten that far diggin in the crates. Again, not talkin down because I'm still discovering lots of old shit (and you def are up on the new shit much more than me). Point being, unless you are well versed in everything since the dawn of Hip Hop, it's really impossible to emphatically say who the GOAT was / is.
-
huh? you said the fix is his worst album? you mean the album that got 5 Mic rating from The Source Magazine?
it's a tight ass album....kanye west production... it's def better than made and his latest album.. you got a weird taste hommie

Big L not on his level?? I don't get it...L's the best ever imo

L is definatly in Face's league.

Lol at Kurupt is mentioned in the same breath as Face.
They can't be compared. Kurupt is a MC,Face is a "storyteller rapper". So I can see where Hack is going. But Face can spit MC shit too,but he hardly does. (Check his verse on Devin's The Dude album).
So clearly Hack prefer MC's over storytellers, nothing to get mad about.

+1 i LOVE scarface's music for sure....it's just that when you throw him on a song with lyricists 2pac (Smile) or Crooked I (Gangsta Rap from Too Gangsta 4 Radio) he sounds average at times.... it's like when you take him away from his element (borderline horrorcore songs with Geto Boys over grimey or funky beats) he can't keep up with certain elite rappers
Scarface has spit some great shit over the years and I'm fully aware...but his ceiling isn't the highest compared to atleast 10 guys i listed

Crooked I is a great MC but has never put out a single project - no way he can be considered better than someone with a disco as deep as Face (15 albums?)
Eminem's last few albums have been a total joke
Kurupt has a pretty weak discography
I guess my thing is I don't just consider TALENT but what you do with your talent, and how that transforms into the making of actual good music - And no rapper has made as good music with so much music being consistent as Face.
Is some of that list better MC's than Face? Easily. Have any single one of them transferred that into a resume as decorated as Face? not even close at all.
-
it's about who was better at their best, NOT WHO PUT OUT MORE CD'S AFTER THEIR PRIME ENDED
Big Punisher is a top 5 emcee ever....how some people don't know this is beyond me.
-
Lol at Kurupt is mentioned in the same breath as Face.
Scarface has spit some great shit over the years and I'm fully aware...but his ceiling isn't the highest compared to atleast 10 guys i listed
you got my point, but in the end there's no point in comparing MC's to storytellers. What I believe Luna is saying,is that Face as a strong catalog of ALBUMS,maybe even the best. Few of the cats on your list can match the quality Face has put down on SO MANY albums...
-
thats a steep claim. i did like the fix though.
-
maybe you could say, "Scarface is the greatest artist of all time"; with the disco. & all.
but lyric for lyric, he is not the best in many peoples books.
"most accomplished artist"? :P
when i think of "greatest rapper" it doesn't necessarily mean their success, but how well they could kill it on the mic.

I co-sign that.

That is the craziest thing about music. Some of the most celebrated artists of all time are not the best or even the most prolific. I will say this, Face has a very consistent catalog, really no weak album in the bunch. Few MCs can say or do that.

exactly..the best catalog therefore making him the best rapper imo..

Kurupt was really good rapper in the 90's. I can say that without even be a fan of him nor the Dogg Pound, but these last years he's been throwing too many "big" words out making them rhyme, thinking it's smart as hell.

i disagree, Kurupt used way more advanced words early in his career and what he said actually made sense back then.

yeah, dont think you can really say opinions are facts
never eally got into Scarface to be honest so couldnt make a fair judgment on his albums
Cubes the greatest imo, 4 classic solos, 2 classic group albums and wrote some of the greatest and most influencial hip hop records of all time
