Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon recently spoke on Dr. Dre and the revolving door at Aftermath records that has failed to retain some artists, including Rakim, Eve and Busta Rhymes.
Defending the Doc, Rae said Dre's work ethic has tended to outweigh his artists' needs.
"I think it's the fact that he probably got a lot of things on his plate at the time [these projects were coming together]," Rae explained in an interview. "When you dealing with certain dudes, you gotta understand that you know, everybody want the time that they can get from [the] man, and if they can't get it it's kinda like it ain't fair. My thing was, if you're not gonna be on top of this project the way I'ma be on top of it, then what good is trying to be a [business] partner to you? If anything I'd rather come in and just get a heatrock from you and keep it moving. I think that's probably the problem [others had]. It ain't nothing to sh*t on Dre about, but a lot of dudes have said that he's been very difficult to catch because he got so much work. And when you think of a 300-400 million dollar n*gga, you gotta respect that that's how it be sometimes. It's all good. Maybe the time [wasn't] right for that. It may happen in the future." (Hip Hop DX)
Former Aftermath rapper Eve previously spoke about her unreleased debut on the label.
"The decision was to have Dre start off the album, but Dre is kinda busy," she said in a 2007 interview. "Swizz [Beatz] is my brother. He knows how to work with me. What was supposed to happen...We decided he might as well be one of the executive producers...Dre likes when projects are done when you come to him. He'd rather it that way, so it's cool." (MTV)
Busta, who released The Big Bang via Dre's label, recently parted ways but detailed his positive relationship with the producer since his depature.
"Me and Dre are still good," Busta told DJ Envy on his "The People's Choice" radio show. "So even though I'm not in business with Aftermath or Interscope, I'm still with Aftermath. Me and Dre are always gonna be good...Big up to Interscope for, you know, giving me the leaked joints and the set-ups." (Hot 97)
Aside from producing, Dre has been trying to release his long-awaited Detox project.
"We only tried to put [Eminem] out this year to replace Dr. Dre, but we got into a quagmire," Interscope head Jimmy Iovine said in an interview last November. "Eminem was always coming next year. But what happened was, I lost Dr. Dre to Eminem. Dre had to stop making his album to finish Eminem's album. Eminem hit a streak, and when a guy like Eminem gets on fire, you stop everything. That's how we lost Dre. Dre's going back in in January. He'll be finished with Eminem by then, and he'll finish his album." (Billboard)

dre is a 300 or 400 million dollar nigga ?
Can't see why not. Dude said in an interview once (around the time 50's first record was coming out, I think) that he still hasn't spent his N.W.A. money. Add to that everything he's made after N.W.A...

In 2001, Dr. Dre earned a total of about $52 million from selling part of his share of Aftermath Entertainment to Interscope Records and his production of such hit songs that year as "Family Affair" by Mary J. Blige. Rolling Stone magazine thus named him the second highest-paid artist of the year. Dr. Dre was ranked 44th in 2004 from earnings of just $11.4 million, primarily from production royalties from such projects as albums from G-Unit and D12 and the single "Rich Girl" by singer Gwen Stefani and rapper Eve. He was ranked 9th in 2008 from earnings of $15 million.

yeah, dre really has a lot on his plate between working on music that's never gonna come out and going to the gym....
raekwon might not be so friendly when they can barely afford 1 of the 3 dre joints for his lp...
-
Dre has a lot on his plate? I don't buy that for a second. He's a ghost...

LMAO exactly, its lazyness. dre has become suge knight and hardly puts out shit no more
-
^ It's not even that, Suge Knight is blackballed. That's the reason none of that Deathrow shit saw the light of day. Nobody wants to work with him. The only people that reached out to him (Murder Inc.) had the feds trial goin on right around the same time.
Dre's just lazy. Somebody like Jay-Z has a lot on their plate. Dre's camp has put out a couple of CD's over the last few years. Raekwon acting like Dre is Master P in '98 (that is A LOT on your plate)
-
nice read man, this is the shit i want to see on DUBCNN, not the bashing and hating.....that Em album hits hard and clear, cant wait to grab the actual CD for the best clearity !
-
Dre isn't lazy, but he's paranoid
-
even what jimmy iovine said has been deviated from...dre isn't working on detox he's working with 50 now...
so jimmy, how does detox 2010 when the american economy is on its deathbed sound

See, you're only looking at what comes to light in terms of releases.
First off, whether or not Suge was blackballed had nothing to do with releasing shit. He had distribution on Koch that would have allowed him to put out whatever records he wanted to. He chose to wait because he didn't want to throw out projects that didn't sell to his reputation hence why he was hesitant to put out Crook's project after the Dysfunktional Family soundtrack did disappointing numbers. Whenever something doesn't happen at Death Row, it always goes back to blackballing. If anything it had more to do with outside situations like Suge's legal troubles than any industry blacklist. In the time that Crook was there, they had late night TV interviews, magazine covers, and a good deal of national coverage. Most of that attention was spent on artists that were not involved with the label anymore.
The assumption that Dre doesn't have a lot on his plate because he's not dropping projects like P did in 1998 seems naive to me. The fact is outside of Eminem and 50 Cent, nearly every project that comes out of Aftermath is dependent on Dre production to sell the album. It's not like other labels where a Snoop or Jay can throw a couple 16's and it's a wrap. In very many ways, it is sort of like Death Row in that there are expectations and a reputation to live up to. It's easy for a fan to go, "It's them being lazy" but record companies are a business and nobody wants to under-perform when it comes to this. To someone who is thinking no further than how bad they want a Crooked I or Hittman album, it seems as easy as just throwing out the album and watching it sell.
I wouldn't be surprised at all about Dre having 300 million dollars. In terms of name value, Dre is the biggest producer in hip-hop music. Interscope is going to keep him as happy as possible because his name is worth millions to any project they get off the ground.
-
^^ good point. Never really thought about it like that. I still think Dre's lazy, but the Suge/DR thing seems a lil clearer now.

But what are you basing that on? Obviously, none of us have the inside source here but I've never heard any artist, current or former, say "I went in to record for Detox and Dre was sitting on a couch in his sweatpants, eating Cheeto's, and watching soap operas while everyone else worked". I think "lazy" is a term the frustrated fans who are tired of waiting for the album are using but it doesn't fit. How many of the people saying this understand the difference between a lazy person and a perfectionist? It seems like Dre's mind state is he wants the album done right and that's hard to set a time table to. I want "Detox" as much as anybody else but it seems pointless to rush it at this point.
-
dre is a 300 or 400 million dollar nigga ?
I thought he had more. Bishop has said a few times that Dres "In Malibu counting his $900 million dollars", and that sounds about right.
-
You over-analyzing as always. He wasn't really talking about the exact millions Dre has, c'mon now people.
-
could care less how much money he has. i'm more bothered about the lack of music that we get to hear compared to the crazy amount he supposedly cooks up in the studio..
-
I'm looking forward to those 3 tracks on OBCL2 produced by Dre. Raekwon sounded sick on "Goldmine" with Busta 8)
-
LMAO @ people calling Dre lazy when it's been stated so many times that Dre makes TONS of shit, he just releases very little of it. That does not equate to laziness, it equates to perfection.
-
not when some of the stuff he releases isn't exactly 'perfection'. there's more to it than that with the whole interscope label situation.
and remember, OBCL2 is confirmed to have a MAX of 2 dre beats now, not 3 (although 3 tracks are done). so maybe 2, but maybe even 1 or 0 on the final cut, depends how negotiations go...
-
Dre's to busy goin to Laker games.
-

yh, think its co produced by dr.dre
-
Damn. some of you guys are funny as fuck. Calling Dre lazy because you don't hear that much music from him?
And what do you people think? Making music is a fun when you're doing it in your home studio, recording a love song for your girl (or boy... depends if you're gay or not)
But Dre works in music industry - I. N. D. U. S. T. R. Y.
some of you realy have to grow up and think about what this world looks like outside your room.
you're a bunch of lazy idiots who spend hours on internet forums...
-
Funny how when Dre's peers in the music business speak about him, all you get is praise. But when mofo's on the internet - who have never met the man - speak on him, you get a lot of hate.
-
Dre got a bill......I think people here miss the whole point in the numbers...if em has more than fif.dealing with this music shit...what yall think dre got,and he gets paid from both of them cats.....Jimmy got waaaaay more than all them together.think about it..just on a yearly salary alone dre get between 15mill. do the math.

-
Ummm I'm not sure if your aware but plenty of dres peers have spoken ill of him.Of course someone that's hoping to get a beat on his album is going to talk bad about him
