Apparently his team didn't reach the Europa League, which is the the 2nd tier of European cups.

Well, I don't know much about the Europa League, it's a new concept starting next season which replaces the old UEFA Cup. Champions League is where the cream of the crop is. The major league can get all top 4 team in that tournament. There are 32 teams in the group stage and from there it's a cup game.
