Title: Dubcnn Exclusive: Stat Quo on Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, Bishop Lamont!!!
Post by: jonathandubcnn on June 06, 2009, 01:39:23 PM
(http://www.dubcnn.com/interviews/statquo-09/statquo-profile.jpg)

So many hip-hop fans are familiar with Stat Quo’s Shady/Aftermath history, and the controversy surrounding his overly-delayed project. To a label surrounded by the elite giants—the three-headed monster known as Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent—Stat came, he saw, and he seemingly failed to conquer. He sat frustrated for years waiting for his music to be brought to the world, to no avail.

Now, speaking from the heart about Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and everything far and in between, a humble (but true and transparent) Stat Quo opens up to share his side of the story with Jonathan Hay and Chad Kiser for this Dubcnn exclusive.

Without sacrificing his respect for those involved, Stat speaks candidly about his journey seeking the emancipation of his art, in what turned out to be an undoubtedly controversial conversation. And seeing how this interview took place in California, we thought it only appropriate to include his song “In California” produced by Focus. Don’t miss this. Also, make sure you pick up his newly released street album Smokin’ Mirrors.

Exclusive Stat Quo Interview (http://www.dubcnn.com/interviews/statquo-09/)

Be sure to hit me up on MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/jonathanhay) with your ideas, thoughts and suggestions and, as always, leave your feedback in our forums.

Stat Quo is ill.  When he was talking about Bishop he was referring to Grow Up, right?

I hope Stat and Bishop hook up again to do a track.

Yeah, he was talking about Grow Up. I wish the label had gotten behind that one because I think that was an excellent record.

Great interview, its nice to actually hear an honest breakdown of the bullshit that goes on at aftermath and its a shame to hear that Dres the main one whos flopping all these album releases for the most part and jimmy to a lesser extent, i guess Dre has a right to be like that when you look at what hes accomplished but still think about how much dope shit we're never gonna hear :(

It's pretty messed up..Trying to maintain and ensure continuity of a certain art may be a huge burden at times... :-\

It's good to hear Stat break it down because generally speaking, Jimmy tends to be the fall guy whenever people get mad at that Interscope situation. It is a bit of a tough situation because Dre is the one label head who is the most removed from being an "artist" in terms of creating new talent. With Snoop and 50, there is a lot more of a necessity for them to have a prominent featured role in the spotlight when they introduce an artist where Dre kind of knows how to establish his fingerprints on the project without making it all about him. He tends to know how to sell a new artist to Dre fans while at the same time, making them able to create an entire fanbase of their own. This is a valuable tool for creating new stars but it's more or less to the point where Dre has done so much that just putting out another album isn't enough. It has to be some "Oh my God! Most incredible shit I've ever heard" stuff or else, it turns into "He has fallen the fuck off!". Stat brought up a great example with that Busta Rhymes album. People really sleep on that fucking album.

That record just wasn't for him. I still feel that Bishop should've given Dre that record. "Grow Up" would've been that perfect first single for Dre to slap the world with.

Not really? Great record, but not a club single you know what I mean? No rapper can blow up off a song like that in today's market, even if it was pushed by the label. Even 50 had in da club.

Grow Up is one of the dopest tracks from the west in a minute and it wasn't even mastered properly.

It's unfortunate the record got black balled.

Can't agree with grow up being the dopest track. It was just mediocre.

Should've asked Stat if he was offered contract from Southern labels like cash money.

Damn...That was an interesting interview..I know I've usually blamed Jimmy I. but I guess Dre is more the reason for the lack of music from The Math....Kind of dissapointing  cause if anybody should know the frustration of trying to be an artist and getting heard it is Dre...Even if you forget about World Class Wrecking Crew and NWA, Dre could not have even gotten The Chronic out without Suge and we know how dope that was. Labels were turning him and Suge down left and right so Dre should no better than to fuck up people's money and careers like he has in some instances.. Stat, Hittman, King T and others will never recoup the money they lost fucking with Aftermath but we kind of focus on the successful shit.....Damn Dre.

Money they lost? Pretty sure they got an advance from the label for albums they never even released. Aftermath paid for the studio time. Sure, they may have lost out on a chance to have the world hear their albums but these things happen with business. To the outside world, all Dre has to do is endorse an album and it's a hit record but business don't work that way. Like I said, look at that Busta Rhymes album. Dre really brought some exciting shit out of Busta and because it didn't go 11x platinum, people act like it's a fucking MC Hammer record.

another great interview by Jonathan & Chad 8) thanks.

lol at Dre for not liking Grow Up  :P :nawty: it's a lot better than the majority of the songs he produced on Relapse, to me.

so Dre was really pissed that Bishop acted on his own; maybe that explains why Bishop has no clue of what Dre is doing with Detox.
i'm glad that Bishop did release the song though! if it was up to Dre, we would have never heard it :-X

might as well leak The Reformation

If Nas had I Can as a single then I think Bishop could have Grow Up as a single.  It's like Stat said you have to have the entire label behind you in order to do a proper job.  In my opinion the majority of marketing teams on major labels are really shitty.  The teams limit themselves before they even give a product a push.

First of all, I am not a supporter of Suge at all and I respect Dre tremendously...The fact is that Dre could not get The Chronic released on his own and as much as I hate to admit it, Suge got things poppin. Go back and research and maybe you will understand my point.  Any idiot can see that without Dre DR would not have been successful but unfortunately, sometimes you need a Suge.
