DALLAS (AP)—A person with knowledge of the deal says the Dallas Mavericks will acquire forward Shawn Marion(notes) from Toronto.
The trade is not official, but the person told The Associated Press on Wednesday it should be completed. The person was granted anonymity because the deal was still being worked on.
The Raptors couldn’t afford to re-sign Marion because they need to clear salary cap space for Hedo Turkoglu(notes). They are close to an agreement with the Orlando Magic free agent.
The deal was first reported by The Dallas Morning News.
Marion is a versatile player who can be used at either forward position. He spent just half a season in Toronto after being traded from Miami.
The trade is expected to include at least one other team to make the salaries work. Oklahoma City and Memphis are likely candidates because they are far enough under the salary cap to facilitate a deal.
The Mavericks have been busy during the offseason, agreeing to give point guard Jason Kidd(notes) a three-year contract for more than $25 million to remain in Dallas. They also are trying to reach a deal with Marcin Gortat(notes), Orlando’s backup center.
Marion was a four-time All-Star in Phoenix but is facing a major pay cut from the $17.8 million he earned last season. He scored 12.9 points per game, well below his career average of 17.8.
Marion will join Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki(notes) and Josh Howard(notes), giving the Mavericks four former All-Stars.

Report: Raps agree to trade Marion to Mavs
The Toronto Raptors have agreed in principle with the Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies on a trade that would see forwards Shawn Marion and Kris Humphries leave Toronto in exchange for Devean George and Antoine Wright, according to ESPN.com sources.
Marion will sign a five-year, $39 million contract with the Mavericks, according to the report.
The details are supposed to be finalized on Thursday.
Who gets what, according to the report:
Toronto: George and Wright
Dallas: Marion and Humphries
Memphis: Jerry Stackhouse, Quincy Douby and cash

There go ANY hopes for a big 2010 agent. 8+ mil a year for the next 5 years for a 31 old nigga? Just after giving grandpa Kidd a big 3 year extension? Marion, Dirk, Terry, Dampier, Kidd, Howard have an average age of about 33. Mavs have no future. Maybe they can make noise this upcoming season, but Dirk needs to absolutely get the fuck out of there after that.

Technically, Turkoglu re-signed with the Magic and was traded to Toronto as part of an eight-player, four-team deal. The Raptors also sent Shawn Marion(notes), forward Kris Humphries(notes) and center Nathan Jawai(notes) to Dallas, and they received swingmen Antoine Wright(notes) and Devean George(notes). In addition, Toronto gave Memphis a second-round pick and cash, plus the Raptors gave cash to Orlando.
Turkoglu, a nine-year NBA veteran from Turkey, helped the Magic reach the NBA finals last season.

since marion has left phoenix he hasnt quite been the same. his biggest thing is his own self confidence and his whole wanting to be wanted, which was his demise in phoenix where the limelight was firmly on nash and stoudamire. i think marion will have a very good year i really do. say what you want about marion but his one of the most versatile defenders in the league and is one of the nba's best in finishing transistion opportunities. plus his a 10+ rebound guy night in night out, but he does have weaknesses like any other nba player does.

Marion is a garbage-man....he seems like he'd fit in with Dallas, but he's always been overrated. that said, Dallas is beginning to look somewhat legit again (if only for the next couple years)..

Sucks to not get Odom, but I rather have Gooden for 1 year than Gortat for 5 years. Rebounding is nuts now. Kidd, Howard and Marion all being outstanding rebounders at their position, throw in Gooden and you'll get the glass cleaned
