Dubcnn sat down with possibly the hottest producer in the game right now, DJ Khalil for an in-depth 2-part interview. In this first part, we discuss DJ Khalil's upbringing, being the son of a NBA player and how he first got introduced to music. Khalil tells us about his inspirations and his first steps as a musician and how he ended up meeting his partner-n-rhyme Chace Infinite to form Self Scientific.
We then get into his relationship with Dr. Dre and Aftermath, on which we tried to get Khalil to talk as much as possible.
As you know, it's hard to find out what's really going on in the Aftermath studios, but Khalil opens up about the recent Detox leaks and Dre's reaction to them, what he thinks of fans criticizing Dre's perfectionism and why he admires his mentor as much as he does.
Check out Part 1 of the interview:
Exclusive Interview With DJ Khalil (Part 1) (July '09) (http://www.dubcnn.com/interviews/djkhalil09-part1)
Look out for Part 2 dropping on Monday, where Khalil describes a typical studio session with Dre, talks about Bishop Lamont, and his current projects. We talk about the Slaughterhouse album, producing the Clipse & Kanye track "Kinda Like A Big Deal", Khalil's group the New Royales, and what else we can expect from DJ Khalil in the times to come.

Dubcnn: What I don't get is, why do these people who write for him, all write the same sh-t?! Isn't he tired of hearing that he's the greatest, he brought you the Chronic, I'm in my 6-4? Nobody can come up with something creative for Dre?
Very good question!!
dope interview

major props
-
good read . DJ KHALIL hottest out 8)

Edit: Ah I see, in the second post you bold the rappers he's worked with. I guess either the Edit button didn't work or it accidentally posted it twice... :P

Appreciate the feedback, keep it coming!

Finally :D

Dubcnn: Why do these people who write for him, all write the same sh-t? Nobody can come up with something creative for Dre?
Khalil: When you start creating for him that way, that's a first sign that he's not even gonna listen to it.
Haha, good to hear this.
-
Finally :D
Haha yeah I know you've been waiting for a minute! Hope it was worth it. I thought the interview came out nice, Khalil is such a humble and down to earth person.

Yeah man I had to ask that, it baffles me when I hear what they write for him.
-
Haha yeah I know you've been waiting for a minute!
Yeah. I remember, i've asked him about that interview, it was in february. The man is just busy as hell.
Next up, Dr Dre.

Yeah we were missing each other for a minute. We actually ended up reconnecting cause I hooked up a B-Real & Psycho Realm show in Hamburg, Germany in August (I won't be there myself as I'm in the Bay all summer) and Tone asked me about the interview again. With the new Slaugherhouse single, the Fabolous single etc this seemed like a good time for the interview.

Yeah. Khalil is growing fast. Maybe the dude will produce some pop artists in the future. The Khalil's time has just begun.
-
man that was a great interview, khalil is 1 of my fave producers now i got to say, the only prob i have with him is just working with other artists, hopfully soon we'l see traks with kurupt,snoop,cube,spice1 etc.
Dubcnn: What's funny is that you see Dre getting criticized by the public a lot for taking so long to put something out. But all the artists and producers who work with him never have anything negative to say about him. What do you think that makes him so special to people working with him?
Honestly, he has nothing else to prove to anybody, as far as I'm concerned, after breaking superstar artists and creating several different movements and hit records. What else does he really have to prove? It kinda sucks that people even wanna doubt him like that, but that's Hip-Hop. That's the record business, it's all about what you've done lately
god i hate when people say this, if this is the case then why is he still producing traks then? he might as well retire. no excuse

Dope interview
Very good job. Good questions
I really learnt interesting things.
-
Cool read
Dre got his team trained to keep mouth shut when asked about Detox haha. They must be tight. Nobody from the tight team really gives anything away.
-
Thanks keep it coming!
-
Dope interview can't wait for part 2
-
Good shit props on that!
-
lol good interview 8) I was going to suggest, but I want to wait for Part 2 to drop so I can make a better post.
-
Nice interview. Cant say much about the leaks
Looking forward to part 2 an hopefully some more info on the new Self Scientific interview!
-
Thanks keep it coming!

Haha I thought the SAME thing when I was typing it out. Like if I was to type every "you know" he said the interview would be twice as long LOL. Especially when I was asking about the Detox leaks and shit.
Thanks for the props! Look for more interviews from me dropping, including MC Ren, The Jacka and a feature on Yukmouths in-store signing for his new album with appearances by Keak Da Sneak, Dru Down, Mistah FAB and more.

O and when he said that when he was coming up he just made beats everyday just for the fuck of it and him just loving it, really tells you something. Him not knowing about how to make money off it and just loving the craft is something that not a lot of people in hip-hop have. That's what you need inside of you for this music shit, you can't let your ego or money and things of that nature take over, you gotta just love and be happy with what you do. Khalil sounds like a really humble and normal dude, not just your average, media whore, tough guy, all about gettin money and just a overall hip-hop robot is what I like to call em. He's a good dude and I always look forward to his new music!!!
-
Haha yah Nima probably need a Part 3 lol. Lookin forward to the new features, should be dope!!!
-
good interview, thanx

I think he's right. A lot of cats are mad @ dre. But, what did they accomplish? Instead of being a bunch of internet kids? Well, almost nothing. I call that disrespect.

But why do 9 out of 10 Dre beats suck balls these days?

I don't think so. Think about Relapse. Maybe I haven't heard the same thing as you, but still.

i dont think its disrespecting him. look at focus, that guy left because the shit he was doing wasnt coming out, whjy work with someone when most likely you album aint coming out? whso fault is that? dre's or the artist?

I understand both of em. Dre & Focus. Focus because when you're an artist, you NEED to put something out. When you're working on something, they're is always a part of you that says "You need to drop this bomb". On the other hand, I understand Dre too. Because if you're looking for perfection, it takes time to reach that level. If you wanna be a leader, you need to work harder than the 99% of followers out there. As I said, I completely understand both of em.

But Khalil's still releasing beats on alot of projects out there. I think Focus needs to blame himself some what for not shopping his beats more, and for not getting on projects that aren't affiliated with Aftermath...

Dre is still that dude. I don't think it's fair for anyone to even question if he's fallen off. He's still the same dude that brought us all that timeless music and he's still doing his thing. It's more to do with whether people are feeling his musical direction as of late.
Relapse for example. I really didn't enjoy that album musically. To me it was pretty flat, cold, not exciting in the least. Probably a minority position, but at the same time, the level of mixing skill on there was obviously light years ahead of most producers. It all sounded correct, I just didn't like the sounds much in the first place.
I'm optimistic Detox will be exciting if Dre brings back that funk/soul influence and there's plenty of warmth to go along with the super crisp mixing and drum sounds 8)

thanks Nima ;)

for what Nima was pointing out, it's a great question.
Khalil made some valid points too.
however, there's definitely some constructive cricicism from the public about Dre & Detox. i don't feel like quoting it time after time, but you can check my signature.

no doubt, Dre is the king 8)
he's still evolving after all these years
