Free agent forward Lamar Odom will return to the Los Angeles Lakers, an NBA source said Thursday.

Odom will sign a four-year contract, with the fourth year at the team option, the source said. One source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com the four-year deal is worth $33 million if the Lakers exercise the final year of the contract.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak declined comment and Odom's agent, Jeff Schwartz, did not immediately return a voice mail.

Odom's signing was the most significant free agent move left to play out this summer, as it restores a pivotal piece to the Lakers' championship team. The versatile, 6-foot-9 Odom averaged 11.3 points and 8.2 rebounds during the regular season and 12.3 points and 9.1 rebounds during the playoffs, despite injuring his back in a fall during the Western Conference semifinals against Houston.

Odom's destination for the 2009-10 season had remained in doubt after the Lakers pulled an initial offer of a reported $27 million guaranteed over three years off the table. As the other franchises with significant salary cap space spent their money elsewhere, the Miami Heat emerged as a serious contender for Odom's services. On Tuesday, the Portland Trail Blazers also got into the mix, offering a five-year, $40 million deal, according to a source close to Odom.

With Dwyane Wade publicly lobbying for Odom to rejoin him in South Beach, the Heat offered a deal worth up to $34 million over five years. The fact that Odom didn't jump at it despite the cooled tone of negotiations with the Lakers indicated his desire to return to Los Angeles, and the longer the saga dragged out the greater the chances seemed that he would be back.

With Odom back in the fold the Lakers would have their top five scorers and top four rebounders from the 2009 championship on the roster to begin the title defense. The only significant loss is forward Trevor Ariza, who left to sign a contract with the Houston Rockets after the Lakers signed former Rocket Ron Artest.

This was huge for the Lakers.  I think picking up Artest would have been irrelevant if they didnt resign Odom.

of course, i mean think about it if we lost odom, that means we lost odom AND ariza for artest. that would of been horrible.

actually, you gotta wonder with this might do for Wades future with the Heat. He wants to be a serious contender, and Odom might have helped make them a little more legitimate in the East. They still wouldnt compete for a title. But I wonder if not getting Odom will really cement the idea of Wade leaving Miami.

Well that was a set up trade, Chris Wallace must have got whores, cocaine and what not for that one.

There is virtually no other explanation. Why in the hell would you dump Gasol for jackshit and then turn around and get Zach MOTHERFUCKING Randolph?

I had every right to get mad.

As for Odom, I think he's a BITCH for literally USING other teams just to get more money from the Lakers. What the fuck? Wade flew over to LA just to persuade Odom. Yet he never ever truly considered joining the Heat for the MLE. What a bitch. I'd be mad as hell if I was Wade or Riley. Or a Heat-Fan for that matter.

If he actually perfered 34$/5y from the Heat over 30$/3y from the Lakers, then YES, it must have been because of his teammates.

But I agree, he probably doesn't hate Kobe, he just used the Heat to get more money. But if he had been serious about leaving (which I'm sure he was not), then yes, hating Kobe was a logical explanation. Why else would you leave the best city, the biggest market and the best team for less money?

"Riding off Kobe's coattail ain't bad," Odom said, laughing. "He's got something special going around. I've got to be around. I've got to be one of the apostles. There was no way I was going to pass up playing with Kobe, Pau, Andrew and Ron-Ron."

he woulda made more money with the Heat, genius...LOL....what dont u get about that? and another explanation would be that there's a lot less pressure on him in Miama, as opposed to playing for another ring with LA......but regardless, his heart was with the Lakers, and all free agents use other teams as leverage, so quit acting like this is something new....PeACe

the deal he initially rejected was 27, with 3 mil of a 4th year guaranteed. look it up nigga. the state tax can't be THAT significant. and he sure as hell would have gotten more than nothing elsewhere after 3 years, wouldnt he?

more money with the heat my ass
Title: Re: Lamar Odom has agreed to sign with...

we signed him to a 4 year deal worth $33 million....the 4th year is a team option, so only $27 million is guaranteed (and that's before tax is removed)

the heat offered him 5 years at $34 million, guaranteed

$33 million with tax removed is much less than $33 million (state tax IS significant)

do u see how the Heat offer was for more money yet? lmao

FYI, Wade never actually got to meet Odom in the offseason. Neither did Pat. As far as using Miami, that can't be denied, but that's what free agency is about. Leverage.

EDIT: My mistake Pat Riley did meet Odom, but Wade didn't.

Listen nigga cause Ima only be saying it one more fucking time.

The initial Laker offer was 27/3 with 3 of the 4th year guarented. Which makes it 30/3 or 36/4. Which is an offer far superior to the 34/5 from the Heat, state tax considered. Stop acting like he would retire after 3 years with the Lakers. He'd definitly get another deal worth about 10 over 3 years.

The current Laker offer is whacker, and he still took it cause he never really intended to play with the Heat.

lol if odom had his on team built around him, he would be a hall of famer no doubt.  6 ft 10, can dribble, pass, shoot, has good post up game, can get 20 points per game can play all the spots on the court except center.

put him on a shitty team instead of a superstar studded roster like the lakers and he'll be puttin up superstar numbers. imo

listen, germany, cause im gunna say this one more time

our initial offer was pulled off the table and replaced with a lesser one. our offer=4 years/33 million with 3 years of that being guaranteed and tax removed. heat offer=5 years/34 million with all 5 years being guaranteed and no tax removed. even if we picked up the option on the 4th year, he'd still get a max of 33 million (with tax removed), which is still far less than 34 million (without tax removed).............read that over and over until you understand which offer is for more money.

Wait what did the you say?? hall of fame? LOL!!

the basketball hall of fame is not only for superstars...there are players who've played integral roles in dynasties who have made it just because they were such a big part of that dynasty...if this laker team becomes a dynasty, lamar odom will be like our james worthy...PeACe

I don't know much about the nba hall of fame but I do know that for football and baseball it's more about the player, and not the team. I just can't picture odom in the hall of fame

lol if odom had his on team built around him, he would be a hall of famer no doubt.  6 ft 10, can dribble, pass, shoot, has good post up game, can get 20 points per game can play all the spots on the court except center.

put him on a shitty team instead of a superstar studded roster like the lakers and he'll be puttin up superstar numbers. imo

every star caliber player who is part of a dynasty has potential to make the hall of fame..no doubt, odom could be averaging 20-10-5 as a first option on another team, but he'd have even less of a chance to make the hall of fame with that role than he does being a key part of a dynasty.

The current Laker offer is whacker, and he still took it cause he never really intended to play with the Heat.

listen, germany, cause im gunna say this one more time

our initial offer was pulled off the table and replaced with a lesser one. our offer=4 years/33 million with 3 years of that being guaranteed and tax removed. heat offer=5 years/34 million with all 5 years being guaranteed and no tax removed. even if we picked up the option on the 4th year, he'd still get a max of 33 million (with tax removed), which is still far less than 34 million (without tax removed).............read that over and over until you understand which offer is for more money.

why are you pretending that he would retire after the laker contract is up? i'd must rather get paid 27 million for 3 years than 34 for 5. unless i think of myself as a complete bum in 3 years, im confident to make more money in the long run if i take the shorter offer for significantly more scrilla per year.

7even i have to disagree. Lamar will be 33 in 3 years, and he still has back problems and pain. I doubt he could have signed a contract better than 7 millions per 2 years (being 33 years old, i mean). Plus he'll compete for the Championship in L.A. in those 5 years, he has kids going to school in L.A., he spent 9 years of his life/career in L.A., L.A. is a place as good as Miami.. i mean.. c'mon.. it's a good deal for him.

The only one who got a "cheap" contract is Artest, imho. But he just wanted to play with Kobe and to win a title, so it's all good.

^LOL, foreal.....If Iverson can't get more than the vets min at age 33, what makes you think Odom can? and who's to say he doesn't suffer a career ending injury within those 3 years? point is, he was offered more guaranteed money with the Heat, and that's what the argument was about, so quit tryna twist it up.....PeACe

^Iverson is anything but an intangible guy - he's virtually worthless once he loses his solo dominance. Odom is a totally different story: with his versatility and soft personality he can do all the little things once he lost his athleticism.

the initial argument was which contract was for more money......and you argued that for some time before you realized you were wrong. now that you know you're wrong, you're tryna twist up what were discussing LOL. regardless, i cant say what will happen after the first three years (in which he'll actually only earn $24.6 mill [minus taxes], not the $27 mill I originally thought)....but i can say that he was guaranteed A LOT more money with the Heat offer, and that's a fact............PeACe
