now i know theres alotta suge haters here despite wat he did for the westcoast n alotta artists but ,cmon, if he ddnt get sold out by some of his artists, ddnt have legal troubles n ddnt get blackballed by the industry- deathrow would have been the shit!!!
who thinks it should be returned to him? with suge at the helm tha roe n the whole coast would be on the map once again..
-
No it shouldn't be, stop succin suges dicc you lil groupie, shit.
-
suge had death row for a decade after all the greats left and did fuck all with it
wideawake have been in control for a few months and are putting out more of the music that people wanna hear than suge has
look at it this way
wideawake: chronic re-lit (bonus tracks), snoop lost sessions, 4 disc deathrow release (with unreleased material)
suge: petey pablo, re-releases of the same shit from 10 years ago
pretty sure i know which one i prefer
-
I think everything Death Row related should be put inside a rocket along with it's biggest "fans" then blasted into space and detonated.
-
lol

but nah real talk
wideawake are here now....but years ago they werent here so you gotta respect suge for what he once did cuz at one time he had one of the biggest labels
why it went wrong.....many reasons i guess but this new label is jus takin what suge put so many years of work in and workin wit it from there

Seriously?
In the past couple of months, WideAwake has released over 20 unreleased Death Row tracks by Snoop, Dogg Pound, etc.
In the past few years, Suge hasn't put out anything other than repackaged "best of" compilations.
Do the math. I'd rather have new shit mixed to a less-than-perfect finished product than to have nothing at all. I don't want to be 50 years old and waiting for the rest of the stuff to hit the shelves.

But we can't dwell on the man's contributions from over a decade ago as an excuse for why some people want him in control this far into time. So after he got out of prison, what has the label put out?
2001: Snoop Doggy Dogg - Greatest Hits... thankfully distanced from all of the other repackaged greatest hits albums with a few unreleased songs
2003: Dysfunktional Family soundtrack... a few cool songs but mostly a bunch of boring ass songs, reminiscent of 80% of Chronic 2000
2005: Kurupt - Against the Grain... nice to hear Kurupt again, but nothing really stood out
So those three mediocre projects aside, what else did Suge do for the West Coast after his release from prison? Nothing positive. Sure, he recruited a few mediocre rappers, gave them cash advances, but that's it, really. It wasn't anything for the "coast," and he didn't even put out their music.
Blacklisting aside, Suge can never recreate what he was a part of. He can provide the muscle, but never the brains. Even during the golden age, there were other people handling that... Dre cultivating the talent, then later someone like George Price communicating between the label and the media to project the image that they wanted, and then someone like Pac whose energy was so contagious for labelmates and fans alike, etc. All Suge did was strong-arm people and provide a lot of the aura that made them so popular outside of the music. But at the end of the day, it's about the music.
-
Over 50 unreleased songs in 3 months, yeah lets give it back to Suge we dont want to hear unreleased Snoop, Pac and DPG. Who wants to hear Crooked I rapping on a Death Row era Dr.Dre beat.

you raise some good points but bottomline
1.you can only hate on suge so much (to a certain degree)
not sayin without this coast would be dead...but some would consider him the spinal cord of this cord cuz dre, snoop, xzibit or anyone else wasnt
and we got haters in other regions tryna stop the rise of the coast
so he steps up and does what he does
now fast forward years later
1.he slips up and gets into some heat in the streets
2.he hasnt released as much muzik that he once did or once was releasin
but still what he once did people have to respect him cuz he was there from day 1 and set the standards and in some ways gave a chance for dre, snoop, others to shine
some would say snoop, dre, and others are livin off of suge's help as in what he did
he put them out there and now there successful but without his big push would they be the same?
prolly not...at least not as big cuz he did so much
would he be able to do so much right now? prolly not but then again there's so many hatin on him and prayin for his downfall its hard also to make a come back (whether it be good, helpful or not)

I don't hate Suge... to be honest, while he was in prison, I was very much waiting for him to come back so that Death Row could reclaim the industry, and I still bought every shit product that they put on the shelves, which is more than I can say for a lot of people, even on this forum. But he had his chance to do it again, and he completely blew it. He had access to Crooked I (up and coming emcee at the time), Kurupt (established rapper in his own right with classic joints under his belt), Left Eye (well known from TLC), etc., all while sitting on top of several hundred unreleased gems from what was arguably the most fiercely talented and capable record label rosters of all time. Nothing happened. NOTHING. They were on the cover of The Source, XXL, appeared on BET's 106 and Park, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and nothing came of it.
You can say what you want to say about Dre and Snoop having made it to where they are now because of Suge, but that doesn't really matter anymore. Death Row started over 17 years ago, and both artists left over a decade ago and have virtually severed all ties with the man. People are waiting on Detox very patiently for far too long, but they will continue to wait and still buy his album when it comes out, and it's not because of Suge or because Dre was on Death Row. The same applies to Snoop and his endeavors. It's not like Suge taught them or gave them the knowledge that helped them get to where they're at now, it's just that they happened to have soaked up that game while on his label.
-
nah i wasnt sayin you were hatin but many have
but yeah whats happened has happened...but IMO alotta credit has to go to what was done before not entirely but alot of it
at the end of the day...suge at one time was like the boss of this coast ( as far as muzik/record deals etc...) and its sad that he isnt doin what he once did, signin artists and actually puttin them out
but again suge accomplished more as a record boss than snoop, dre and many others have but more importantly dre/snoop
so in a sense IMO....hate should be thrown towards snoop, dre jus as much as is thrown toward suge for not puttin artists out especially dre

1.knoc dont even rep his own city...lol (but yeah he did put knoc on...the rest is his fault)
2.yeah he put xzibit on the map but why not keep him on the map?
3.yeah he put game on but more on the commercial tip
what about more of that restless vibe?
what about rakim...tha way he wanted it?
what about king t?
what about ice cube?
what about nate dogg?
what about mc ren?
now aite mc ren wont make him as much money as a 50 or a game commercial song will....but thats the thing, hes more for the industry

Absolutely should NOT be given back to Suge.
WIDEAwake actually RELEASES music. No matter what we think of the quality, these are songs that were not leaking otherwise. I give them props where props are due.

why the fuck would death row be given back to suge? an even better question is why the fuck do you post in red?

If we're gonna throw out pointless, hypothetical scenerios like this one... I say give all Death Row's music to the artists and producers who made it.

Suge fucked with lots of mainstream non-West Coast people too. It's the music business and whoever either of them could get a record that was hot, they fucked with them. End of story. Some cats blow up, some don't.
-
shit giving death row back to suge would be like sending a abused child back to the parent that abused it. he fucked up deathrow with his greed and just trying to be more in the spotlight then his own artist. I think Wideawake is doing just fine with what they are doing right now and albums are coming out which would have never seen the light of day if suge had his way. so the answer is clear Hell No

Dre helped to keep Ice Cube relevant aswell as MC Ren with "Hello" but Ice Cube doesn't need Dre, he keeps himself relevant, same with Nate Dogg. As for Xzibit and keeping artists "on the map" I don't think it's fair to expect Dre to work with every artist he ever has and keep working with them on every album, he blows them up and gives them the platform, its from there they needa do their own thing. Knoc repped West Coast hard lol dunno how that can be denied??? I probably wouldn't have heard King Tee if it wasn't for Dre either...
And Rakim? He's from the East coast bro lol
Dre didn't make Game commercial, all the Dre/Game tracks were gutter as fuck. I don't think Dre's ever followed any industry/music trend, he does his own lane, and makes good music, period. People needa stop relying on Dre to help every artist on the West blow up, Dre makes universal music

Suge can wash my car. Blood. ::)

I don't consider myself a Suge Knight hater. But I don't think the company should be returned to him. Biggzy, you seem to act as though Wideawake were the ones who took the company from Suge. I'm not trying to start a fight here, but Wideawake just bought the company after Suge had already lost it. Now, I know that they haven't managed the company perfectly either. But I think you have to come to terms with the fact that Suge doesn't have the label anymore.
I hope Wideawake starts managing their company better. But I'm not going to say that Suge should have Death Row back because I don't think it's very likely in the first place. But secondly, even if he could get it back, I'm not sure he would manage it any better. It seems that Wideawake are having some quality control issues they need to work out. And that's one thing I don't recall the old Death Row ever struggling with. But on the other hand, Suge's Death Row had plenty of its own problems. In its final years, he seemed to make the record label into his own forum for voicing personal grievances against former artists. And in doing so, the label really suffered. There was a lot of talent on the label, even when it was "Tha Row." But most of it ended up being wasted.
-
Wideawake are doing there best to bring death row back where as in the final years all suge seemed to do was drag death row down with him.

Fuck off

I think everything Death Row related should be put inside a rocket along with it's biggest "fans" then blasted into space and detonated.
co-sgn lol :D
-
Suge was sitting on the tracks for all these years, so I wouldn't want him owning the tracks.
However,
When Suge did put shit out, he made sure the quality was there. For example, the versions of "Friends" and "Thug Nature" that he released on Too Gangsta 4 Radio was ridiculously better than what Afeni and company did to those tracks for Until the end of Time. Same with "Head Doctor". The version released on Dead Man Walking makes the one on The Lost Sessions look like a joke.
He shouldn't own the catalog, but at the same time, for the sake of improving the quality of releases, Suge should have at least a consulting role in these projects.
-
Suge was a good owner from 1991-2000 -- he got Dre out of NWA and told him to go solo and executive produced all eyez on me, the greatest album of all time; even when he was in jail he put out gang related, daz's first album, and chronic 2000, which all did gold or better. he secured the contract with interscope and mtv and put the west on the main stage.
Post 2000-2008 -- Suge was aweful. Horrible promotion for the company. The lead acts he signed were good: Crook, Top Dogg, Tha Realest, Eastwood, and bringing back Kurupt -- his main downfall was putting artists in purgatory and not releasing anything new. He let the fans down.

+1
Suge has always been a good owner, but what he doesn't do is music. From that period you mentioned where he was good (1991-2000), he had people under him at each stage in time dropping bomb ass music while hand-picking the hot music--first Dre (who recruited D.O.C., Snoop, Warren G, etc.), then Snoop (who recruited others like Tha Dogg Pound, LBC Crew, etc.), then Pac (who recruited the Outlawz and built bridges between Death Row and other artists around the country who didn't necessarily have ties with Death Row before, like Richie Rich, E-40, Scarface, Bone Thugs, Boot Camp, etc.), then Daz (who basically ran the label in Suge's absence for a while, keeping the Death Row spirit alive somewhat).
After 2000, Suge was just putting on random rappers who never really could break through (with Crooked I being the biggest exception), with many of them just being street goons who Suge probably hooked up just because they had street cred but maybe not necessarily the talent to be a gangsta rapper with any amount of success. Why? Because he didn't have a right-hand man who actually knew the music inside and out. Even when he recruited Kurupt again, nothing happened.
If I had been in charge of the Death Row catalogue, rest assured that the company would still be alive and strong, and you guys would all have Death Row music every year. I love what Suge did in the 1990s for the company in terms of getting the music out, but he sat on a goldmine that loses value each year.
-
Hell no he shouldn't get it back. He's the reason why Death Row is the way it is.
-
Who did Suge put out? Dre was already an established artist, and he was responsible for Snoop Dogg blowing up. DPG got big from their association with Snoop. Pac was already a big rapper when he signed with Death Row.
The artists made Death Row, not Suge. The proof is right there, by what happened to the label after they left.

"Too Gangsta For Radio" and "Dead Man Walking" were both released while Suge was in prison and someone else was running the company for him. The song from "Lost Sessions" isn't a different version of "Head Doctor". It's a song released before it came out. If you look at Snoop's Death Row material, he pretty much re-used most of the lyrics off songs that never were released on other projects.
-
Hell Naw! Suge had his chance but his James Avery lookin fat bald ass fucked it up. Deathrow should be given to me and the rest of LAPD finest like Officer Perez, Reggie Jr, Nino Durden and fuckin Frank Lyga..........we'll make dat shit gangsta again 8)
-
LOL, nice red font, I'm sure Suge regards you very highly because of that.

Too bad all of their music sucked in the past decade.
