Dubcnn connects with WIDEawake/Death Row Records for another exclusive interview, this time with Senior VP John Payne. Chad Kiser & Jonathan Hay recently caught up with John in the wake of the latest releases from Death Row Records, The Chornic Re-Lit and Snoop Doggy Dogg – The Death Row Lost Sessions Vol. I.

In this in-depth interview, we find out the probability of seeing the release of solo material of Sam Sneed, Lady of Rage, and CPO (to name a few), we solve the mystery of the “Death Row .pdf file”, and we even discuss his relationship to the original Death Row label, when it was started as Future Shock.

In true Dubcnn style, we ask the questions no one else does, and we get John to respond to the inquiries about the “mixing” of the current releases the label has put out, he goes a little more in-depth about why we haven’t and may not hear Dr. Dre vocals, and his reasons for why the Death Row catalog doesn’t get the same media attention as other historical, legendary and classical catalogs.

You definitely don’t want to miss out on this exclusive interview!

He really didn't seem to address the problem of the mixing...he sort of just said a whole bunch of stuff but never really answered the question.  Hopefully it gets better on future releases.  You can tell that he doesn't like Daz...no mention of Daz or tha dogg pound.

you can get ADAT machines on eBay or in pawn shops for a hundred bucks.  shit i have one they can borrow.

seems like lots of excuses in this interview.  he never admitted that the snoop cd had problems that could have been avoided had they actually listened to their product before shipping it out for manufacture.  aty least he had the presence to understand the foonay/dave theme and include them together.  realistically they should have put those freebie songs on the box set since only a small percentage of their market are internet savvy.

thanks for the interview ;)

Quote
Dubcnn: Speaking of the whole mixing from the half inch tape thing, that leads into my next inquiry. As you know, this interview is for DubCNN: The West Coast News Network and on our forums, people can start up little topics and leave comments and things of that nature. You’ve been taking a beating on our forums for the first couple of releases because of the mixing.

But you know what, it’s cool and I’ll explain. When we were putting out The Re-Lit project, my intent was to take it straight from the vault un-altered, the way the last person that worked on it left it. I don’t want to come in and remix something. Some of the mixes are not going to be perfect, but it’s still what that era was about. Again, if you read any of the other interviews that I did, I said, ‘I take full responsibility’. But the cut was taken straight from the vault un-mixed, only mastered.

You know there are a lot of people who don’t know what goes into this kind of process and there are some people that didn’t even listen, they were just following a trend. Personally, you know that is their opinion, but I did state we were coming straight from the vault. As things go on, there is probably going to be some mixing involved with some of the original people, but right now, we haven’t even had it a year and there is a time for certain things and we don’t want to step on any toes, and put stipulations where you can’t do certain things. We can put it out in it’s original form, so before we jump out and step on toes and start doing stuff that is going to cause big problems, the people can continue writing forums hating me, because I really don’t care. I was just trying to do the right thing by getting it out and not hurt the legacy. But when the time comes, we will address the people that were involved in the making; there are people that have said they had worked on certain things that may have not, but then again we will go through the right process to make sure the right people come in when it is time. Many people do not understand that for the amount of money that was spent, we still have to walk cautiously, but we do have to get things out so that we do start to return some money back that we spent on this. And everyone is entitled to their opinion and they can think what they want, but I do not really understand how you can hurt something if you didn’t touch it. You know, there are a lot of people, nobody was in there, nobody saw this, and there are some people who have opinions that are just basically out of hate for various reasons. Again they were not in the room, they didn’t go through lots of tapes to find what we could and we were legally able to use, that in itself limited the parameters’ to what we could do.
i don't believe that they did the best they could: even the old death row put out previously unreleased songs in better quality.

Reall good interview with a lot of insights behind the WIDEawake walls. Even though the struggled on some questions, John did a good job taking his time to explain several questions and issues.

Chad picked some pretty questions as well. Nothing to add there.  8)

great interview. Lets hope one day that shit with dre gets sorted out.....or someone mysteriously leaks it out on the net

I just wanna hear it

John sounds like a good dude and i get some of his points. I like the idea that he wants to get people who were originally on board, like Chris The Glove Taylor, on board to help remix some of the work. I really hope the Snoop Lost Sessions volume 1 was really a first in continuation of releasing Snoop songs from back in the day. Poor Young Dave, Dogg Collar, Doggystyle were dopeness that im glad we got to hear in good quality

Good job on the interview, I still think payne is part bullshit. The Foo Nay Mic/Poor Young Dave (wasn't it originally nigga named dave???) thing was a smart collaboration given the subject matter. Only thing I'm hoping is 1. He doesn't mix it, cause the excuses here sound like bullshit and the 2. They stop using MP3s for Albums like the lost sessions.

I got some other complaints, but I guess it should wait until more information surfaces. Only thing this interview could of used, was a question of his view Hayland.

I wish they spent more time improving the product and the brand's image instead of blaming the fans and making excuses for their fuck ups. They basically said from day 1 that this whole thing was for the fans so they shouldn't be making excuses and burying their heads in the sand when the fans raise important issues with them like sound quality.

He gave a wack answer as to why the sound quality wasn't mastered properly.  And he came off as big headed for someone who is involved in a shaky investment.  He should be a lot more professional and fan friendly -- nobody has to buy these albums and from the numbers the first two releases put up, the company better plan on releasing another 80 releases to try and break even.  At the end of the day, the fans aren't going to buy this anyway except for a few people on the forums.  Another good question to ask him is why they keep releasing the same songs over and over again (i.e. "Gin & Juice, Cali Love, Dre Day"), etc. that every single west coast fan already has in their collection.  Another good question would be is if they are going to release the diss tracks the artists have done.  Also, I would like to know if Tha Realest is going to have any of his albums/tracks released or are they avoiding releasing his stuff.

Realest aint gonna get a release, if Snoop only moved 4400 how many would tha realset move? Maybe 200 at best. His best hope is a digitial release.

He'll get released. It's about "opening the vaults" at this point. Lol. I think WIDEawake gave up on the sales aspect after they got their #'s back.

Agree 100 about the sales! They might as well put it all up at once for digital download and advertise it on tv.  Wideawake is taking a huge multi-million dollar hit in the pockets and John Payne is talking shit and defending their wackness to not pay someone credible to professionally mix "The Lost Sessions."  And the artists are staying far away.

Yeah thats what i mean, i think the lesser know artists will get digital releases since only the hardcore fans will buy them.
