forgetting about the subject matter of the songs etc this is musically and production wise on another level to anything we've heard this year. by a long way. quik remains a genius at work.
-
Slaughterhouse if that counts (since Crooked is west coast)
my fav westcoast release is THE ULTIMATE DEATH ROW COLLECTION box set lol - but Re Lit was tight too
-
im pretty much only talking about the production. the SH album wasn't great in terms of the beats at all.
and re-releases/relits don't count. just new music :P
-
is there an instrumental?
-
i wouldn't say the vocals really get in the way too much. it mostly fits with the fun kind of vibe. only instrumental is for hey playa.
-
Yeah Kurupt didn't really have it lyrically but the production was great, banging from beginning to end

SH had some great beats on it
the one, cuckoo, sound off, salute me, cut you loose etc.
-
I dig Blaqkout, but more for the mixing and mastering. There was really no beats for me that just had me awestruck but as a whole it was a very cohesively produced album.
-
man are you serious with this thread ? blaqout had the first 3 songs were cool then the rest sucked
-
i would agree, but seriously; what else has dropped as competition?
-
Agreed! This album is musically the best record I've heard in years...
DJ Quik tried a new direction wit Fixxers and it wasnt all that but this time he makes something incredible!
-
LOL laughable..rhyming was subpar..and some production was good..but nothing amazing..broaden your horizons...just cause 2 west coast vets make an album together dont mean its gonna be good..
-
i agree but i think this album could've been damn near classic if they took their time with it. it was rushed and you can tell....i remember kurupt saying it didn't take them long to make it.....imagine if they did.
still, "blaqkout", "tha appeal" & "cream n ya panties" were excellent. too bad the whole album didn't sound like those 3 songs.

I'm with this guy. Kinda let down with the album as a whole.

Oh! has an amazing beat :o Can't stop bumping that song
I really dig Fuck Y'all too

-

-
8 out of 13 traks were good and yes it was the best westcoast album so far. its a shame kurupts lyrics werent in their along with quiks dope production

Nah it didnt. Production let it down big time

Bang!! 9 times outta 10 !!!

good point, but i'd like to see anyone who disagrees making a case for presumably another album that sounds better. the sound quality on blaqkout far surpasses anything else this year.
the lack or complete absence of alternatives in this thread pretty much proves the point.

There was some nice production on Blaqkout, but there was also weak production. The Madlib album was far better sounding.
-
yeah an album mixed and produced by Dj Quik is always good
-
i've always been more of a "banger" guy than a "smooth" guy & even though it had a few bangers; Relapse had some great production.
but for pure sound, it might be Blaqout.
-
i'm still noticing new sounds every time i listen to this cd. it definitely comes down to musical preference, but if you wanna hear something crisp, clean and funky sounding then there isn't any competition.
relapse might be a good comparison because it is pretty much produced entirely by a WC producer, but i don't think dre really pushed the envelope on there. it didn't have the warmth/life/bounce to it that the best stuff on blaqkout did 8)
-
like I said before, Madlib's tribute to dilla is way better than Blaqkout.

gonna check it out. probably not gonna be up my street as much as quik's sounds but the other madlib stuff i got is straight. and dilla 8)
-
i'll take fashawn's 'boy meets world' album over blaqout in terms of production, taking nuthing away from quik tho', i just enjoyed exiles production much more
-
Well. It's the west coast release I enjoyed more than the others.
I wanted to buy the CD first, but I instead listened to a leak of it and quickly put it on my iPod  then I bought myself a copy (I also embedded that into my iPod as well since it's quality was higher than the leak ;D)
I had that shit on repeat all day. After a few weeks it lost it's replay value. But I enjoyed it. 8)
-
random but it makes great background music for playing mario kart 8)

100% with this post, it's like you just took all of my thoughts lol
I still bump some of the album though from time to time, might even bang some of it later after I roll up... great album when blazed, especially with headphones on and you hear every aspect of the mixing/mastering 8)
-
there's a lot to appreciate. i'm gonna spark something and do a lil' review and give some insights 8)

Very good album. Only flaws in it were whatcha wan do original & remix songs & the unnecessary interlude at 12.
