but a shit year for mainstream music.
real talk yo :coffee:
-
depends on the meaning of underground.
you mean like people who aren't played on the radio or people who really aren't known?
because i don't consider guys like Budden & Rae & Royce "underground" rappers.
but a young group like Inverse, dropping a dope ass CD; that shit was ill.
regardless of what you actually mean, either way it's true. 8)

the undergound will always have a leg up on the pop shit. always. the only thing that mainstream has on the indies is some of the beats, other than that.......
-
hip-hop is always doing good whether it be commercially by the masses or the few
One can say mainstream hip-hop is doing good when you see a nas album or a jay-z or a ludachris album . There's been a lot of club dominate hip-hop this past year. Drake, Wale, Kid Cudi, Eminem, Jay-Z are few to hold it down on a mainstream level with lyrics and a message (even eminem).

hard distinction to make. but i think my point is more about the obvious commercial music being really terrible (whereas in the past it has been pretty decent) and there being a higher percentage of less well known acts bringing out dope albums than say '08.

50
clipse
wale
kid cudi
jay-z
eminem
I know you don't like the 50, Eminem, or jay-z album. What about the other 3?

thought all of that was dope; Jay & 50 exceeding expectations & the rest meeting them, but they were somewhat high.

Skyzoo put out a dope underground album
-
Souls of Mischief might just sneak into album of the year considerations too;)

none of this stuff really. clipse are cool and while i can't really say yet, i don't think their new cd is as good as 'hell hath no fury'. kid cudi i did listen to a few times, not really my kind of vibe. got other music i'd rather listen to if i want something on the spacey chillout.
there has been some great stuff in '09:
chali 2na
dj honda H4
red and meth
slaughterhouse
blaqkout
M.O.P.
Cormega
De La Soul (nike promo LP)
new Souls of Mischief is sounding pretty fucking good too 8)
-
I haven't heard the rest but Blackout 2, Blaqkout and Slaughterhouse were all one big disappointment.
-
^^ Slaughterhouse? For a debut album that was recorded in like one month I cant imagine why would you call it a disappointment, Im not lookin at this as a fan of Slaughterhouse or Crooked I,just as a fan of music, production was tight, MC-ing part was great, some serious songs like Rain Dropz, great summer single The One,(Not Tonight couldve been a cool single too) they showed great chemistry as a group. Its true that album doesnt have a concept and that some songs are without it as well. But disappointment? Hell nah.

yeah the raekwon was definitely one of the better releases in '09 too. not really much mainstream about it if we were to categorize.
