Maybe not your average hip hop fan..but the hardcore ones that download MP3's and stuff.
People like to talk about how music sucks nowadays and theres no good rap, but quite frankly-I think people have unfair expectations. Now I believe some disappointments are genuine, but I strongly believe others are unfounded. This past few month this board has shitted on the latest efforts from artists like Jay Z, Bone Thugs, Snoop Dogg, and Xzibit. I think the better question is what album has this board supported.
Im not saying that the aforementioned albums are classics, but I enjoy each and every one of them. I remember that its about music..nothing more, nothing less. I hear people calling this last Snoop Dogg his worst, the new Jay Z album the worst album ever, Xzibit being shit since he hooked with Dre, and Bone Thugs new album being nothing short of awful--non stop negativity..but if you check magazine reviews or regular reviewing places such as amazon.com these albums are generally praised or at the very least considered good albums. The bottom line is, internet geeks are spoiled and obnoxious when it comes to music. I'll tell you this much, if God's Son gets completely dissed on these boards I will be officially convinced that this board are comprised of negative people that will never be happy.

Check the thread about The Watcher 2. It touchs on alot of the same points.

I still like a lot of what is coming out, i just don' think anyone makes complete albums anymore and the reasons are:
1) everyone has to rush their albums to keep their name out
2)noone digs deep, they just rip off a Pac or BIg song or get the Neptunes
3)artists are spreading themselves too thin with incredible guest appearances on other peoples album and not saving the shit for their own
4)albums are not cohesive(too many guests and producers)
5)artists are afraid to be creative because only certain types of songs right now(Neptunes, remakes, rap/love songs) are popular.
I have high expectations, but i happen to think people like NAs, Snoop, Jay-z, and Xzibit are great artists with a lot of talent. When they don't put out some thing next level and just copy everyone else, it brings the game down. Just like when my favourite basketball team has a subpar season, if a rapper i like puts out something below what he is capable of i feel i have the right to say so. peace ya'll

Great post.
Lately I been disappointed with Xzibit, Snoop, W.C., Onyx, Erick Sermon, Busta Rhymes, and even more. I think this has been a poor year, and ppl water their shit out like Teecee said.
The only ones remotely impressive was Jay-Z's latest and Scarface's latest, and even those were only good, not great. (Blueprint & Last of a dying was both better than these 2)
I dunno, maybe this is just a period with little creativity, and people need a monster-album to get back to making dope albums.
Hopefully this album will be Rakim, or maybe 50 Cent.

No offense, but dont go around stating your opinion as fact. Dont refer to all this music as watered down and uncreative because a lot of people like it and this may be a lot for you to stomach-but not EVERYBODY agrees. Somebody else on this board made a similar comment, but maybe the problem isnt with the music the artist's music but your ear. My friend who doesnt generally like a lot of rap has been running wild for the new Snoop CD and listens to it constantly. So again, your opinion isnt the music communitys opinion so quit acting like it--all of yall.

The only album I had really high expectations for was Man VS. Machine. I actually thought this would be the West Coast classic we have been waiting for but I was hugely disappointed.
Nelly is the G.O.A.T. he sells records ::)!

Good topic here...
I totally feel that people have got their expectations too high. It's like everybody's got to make a classic album for people to like it nowadays. Sometimes I don't even understand how much people can put down an album. When Man vs. Machine came out it was like 5 people liked it. Somehow everybody was expectin' this huge bomb-ass album that'll blow your mind away 'n set standards. Agreed, it didn't do that, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good album does it? I also can't understand all the negativity Jigga's been getting for his new album. I copped that shit today and I'm totally feelin' it.
Maybe it's just people believin' the hype too much. WC did a whole lot of promotion for his new album. He was like on every radio show talkin' 'bout the album & spittin' freestyles. He had an interview on a whole bunch of hip-hop websites. He got everybody hyped up, y'all saw it yourselves. What's got me surprised is that I ain't seen posts all over the forum dissin' his record. Jome's comment was the first negative one I heard on WC. (And you've got every right in the world to have that opinion.)
Nowadays a lot of artists' albums don't really get that much promotion. When that happens, I've noticed people creatin' hype themselves. They create these big expectations out of the blue and then their world comes crashin' down when the album isn't so massively dopalicious they expected it to be.
What to do? Just don't believe the hype. Let the music speak for itself.

The only album the last few years that blew me away the first time I listened too was 2001...Most of the time an album has to grow on me like Man Vs. Machine which I thought was trash the first few times i heard it but it's a really dope album equal to that of Restless...I know I might be in the minority here but even Blueprint 2 has grown on me, it's no where near Blueprint but i think its pretty decent...The problem might be artists are rushing out albums once a year these days and its hard to make a classic album like that...
