Title: There is no doubt that Lincecum is the best pitcher in the majors..
Post by: S P I C E on January 20, 2010, 01:12:59 AM
33-12 record with a 2.55 ERA the past two seasons, leading the league in strikeouts both years.
526 strikeouts during the last 2 years, 10.5 k's per 9 innings

Leads the majors in ERA, batting average against (.214), winning percentage (.733) and strikeouts over the past two years.

Can't really be debated.

Doc has been consistent for a long time in the toughest division in baseball.

Doc has been consistent for a long time in the toughest division in baseball.

Over the last two years he has not been as good as Lincy is

Doc has to face the Yankees, Redsox & Rays.

Lincy has to the Padres, D-Backs & Rockies.

it's not comparable.

but if i was a GM, i would get Lincy; younger, hasn't hit his prime yet (scary thought) & clearly almost as dominate.

he's either the best or second best in Baseball.

LOVE HIM! 8)

Don’t forget to factor in the Giants offense that Lincecum has to rely on. In the last two seasons there is no doubt that the Giants have had an extremely poor offense, as bad as any offense in the majors.  This certainly affects Linecum’s numbers and success as much as pitching in the top divisions, against the top talent can affect other pitchers.  There is a lot of pressure when you know you are likely to receive a guaranteed loss if you surrender 3 or more runs.  Yes Doc faces the Yankees and Red Sox often which is an obvious disadvantage but don’t forget to consider how much it affects Lincecum to have a terrible offense behind him.

Lincecum’s stats are also nearly even as they relate to home and away games, along with every division and every team pitches against.  Lincecum has the same career numbers pitching against the Cardinals for example that he has against the Nationals.  As far as the last two seasons are concerned, there has been no better pitcher in the league than Timmy.

Stats wise yes but I don't think I could consider him the best until I see him go up against AL powerhouses like the Yankees, Red Sox, etc. I can't say I agree that he's the undisputed best pitcher, but he's certainly up there. Incredible talent, no doubt.

It's tight, over the last two years Lincy was worth 15.7 wins and Doc was worth 14.7.  Only 1 win separate them and the difference in competition likely evens things up.  And since Doc has been this good for longer I'll break the tie with that.
