hey whatsup everybody. before i forget, since i won't post again til sometime next year, I want to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season - wherever you may be. I also want to mention Jam Master Jay real quick. a lot of you are younger cats so you probably don't understand the magnitude of his loss. it was devastating. dre and ra and a lot of us older cats are still deeply sad and shocked at his violent death. Ra took it harder than anyone. him and jay weren't real close but they toured together and came up at the same time. I'll talk more about the musical effect on Ra later. dre made a contribution to jays trust fund and everyone else pitched in some too. jays death is just another step back in rap. soon we'll be past the point of no return. it makes you wonder if all this shit is worth it. run dmc retiring for good makes this all the more disheartening. oh well what can u do? the only thing we can do is to do something to change where hip hop is. that gets us back in the studio everday. we have something worthwhile to fight for. this music we love is in trouble and unless a lot of things change , the things Run DMC and JMJ, rakim, dre and other pioneers have fought and even died for will be lost.
The last couple of weeks rap has had some great albums come out. no I ain't talking about snoop, jay z or ja fool. I'm talking about Talib Kweli's QUALITY and The Roots PHRENOLOGY. those are two incredible records and they actually have something positive and meaningful to contribute to hip hop. no beefs, no bling bling, no bitches and litlle violence, just dope and powerful music. go support these artists. help change the tide of the types of records people are buying. you guys have the power, go do something about it.
People have been asking me about Ice Cube. When I tell them I have no comment I mean it. No actually deal has been agreed upon, so until cube and dre agree on a contract, and cube gives his John Hancock, nothing is official. but have no fear, a big squabble would have to occur for the deal not to get done. a authentic deal is thisclose.
the next topic I want to discuss is the steady and rising criticism of Dre's production, as well as the accusation Dre is turning his back on the westcoast. As far as accusing Dre of turning his back on the westcoast, that is the ultimate disrespect. without Dre there is NO westcoast, this forum would not be in existance and a lot of doors would remain closed. the fact is dre doesn't look at location he looks at talent, work ethic, originality, etc. dre doesn't owe the westcoast anything. dre laid down the blueprint, blazed the trail and gave opportunities to a large amount of talented artists here on the westcoast. Dre won't be around forever, its not his responsibilty or in the best interests of the westcoast to run a monopoly over artists. its time for others like snoop, the original inmates and many other westcoast artists to pick up the slack and create opportunites. a lot of these artists learned so much knowledge and musical techniques from dre, its time for them to grow up, be their own man and get shit done. if dre finds an artist who happens to live on the westcoast whom he wants to guide and help become successful he will. dre don't care about location, creed, color or religion - he cares about music and any type of person who has something positive to contribute.
This month is the 3rd anniversary of "2001". Dre's production on "2001" has had a monsterous impact on rap and music. every other song on the radio has a "2001" influence. dre brought 2 things to the forefront on "2001". One, was the futuristic sound Dre established. the outer space sound affects that zip back on forth started on "2001". now that sound effect is on a thousand tracks. Two, Dre brought the minimalistic live instrument sound to music. the beats weren't incredibly complex, but they were start from scrath, made outta thin air tracks (2001 used only 2 samples). Dre emphasized booming drum tracks and kicks (with Mel man's input), strings, bass, a lot of keyboards and piano, a little guitar, and a few other brass and other instruments. Dre set another trend and almost everyone followed (except for groups like outkast and the neptunes, a producers like alchemist, kanye west etc). Dre's productions since 2001 have stayed on the same type of vibe for the most part. he did change things up with tracks like Break Ya Neck, X, Fight music, etc. I strongly disagree with anyone who says Dre hasn't made a lot of dope dope tracks since 2001. I can go on for 20 songs that are as good as anyone's. y'all just spolied. sure some tracks didn't turn out great and yeah the sound has gone stale a bit. but most of the reasons Dre's "2001" sound has gone stale isn't dres fault. a ton of producers and artists copied the sound and eventually caught up and surpassed Dre. However, these lazy copycats weren't going to dictate what Dre was doing. CONTINUED

Did we tell him to stoP?

(2001 used only 2 samples).
Not tryin to hate at all. but yeah technically there were only 2 "samples" on that album, but other songs were remade, like the "Let's get high" bassline is from Fatbacks "backstrokin" or the melody from "Forgot about dre" is from No Doubts "The Climb". Again, not tryin to hate, just sharin some knowledge.
oh and "Xxplosive" is from Isaac Hayes' "bumpy's lament"

^Now that's a dedicated fan^

People expect Dre to come up with a new sound that will change the game every year. thats impossible. when everyone started copying the "2001" sound Dre could have panicked and tried to rush out a new sound. but that would have allowed everyone else to dictate how dre does things. Dre realizes that his 2001 sound has been saturated and that he is repeating himself quite a bit. there is only so many ways to do the simplistic approach of 2001. and believe me there is a method to Dre's madness. there is a reason for everything dre does. Dre's theory is that when he gets to the point where all of his songs sound too repetitive and people are starting to complain, the time is about perfect for dre to release the new sound. In fact a lot of dre's recently released tracks are really simplistic. however, they are still dope enough to help the artists and keep Dre on the shortlist of top producers. Some people wonder if Dre has lost the hunger, the edge, the drive to make music better than ever before. the answer is that yes he has lost a little of those things. thats human nature. dre has a net worth in the 9 digits, he has the "legend" and "genius" monikers, he has a grammy for producer of the year, he has worldwide respect, he has accomplished everythng there is to accomplish, he gave opportunity to many artists, he is close to having the records he produced on of hitting the 100 million mark. dre has left an incredible legacy and a path for future artists and producers to follow. there is no reason to keep making music. If y'all want, Dre can stop making music for good and disappear into the sunset never to be seen again. Its tough a lot of days for Dre to come to the studio. he spends time with his family, travelling to his many homes in exotic spots. but when he does get to the studio its business time and Dre will spend days at a time to get things done. dre will tell you he lost a little focus for a while. He changed the direction he wanted to go with Detox once a week. it is tough to come up with the motivaction to keep working when you already have everything you'll never need. I know a lot of you are complaning about dre. dre is in a no win situation with some of you. when he uses the same style you complain that he isn't doing anything different. then when he switches things up, those same people will cpmplain that hes not doing the old sound. I know that a lot of people disrespecting dre or bitching and moaning about dre will be back on his jock when Oh My God and DEtox are released. The final thing I have to say on this is this - a lot of people are hating on and doubting Dre, fans, artists and critics alike. a lot of people think Dre has lost it for good and will never get the magic back. a lot of people are waiting to drive a stake through Dre's heart. The last few months Dre has gotten a little more angry. he feels like he's being backed to the end of the ledge and everyones trying to push him off the cliff into the abyss. I can see the focus and determination in Dre's eye again. The last 10 months he's made some great music but right now its angrier, more aggresive. more ominous. he's trying a kinds of different things. hes being extremely inventive on some tracks, on others hes going back to his roots. JMJ's death has also given Dre a cause to fight for. Dre feels his musical life is at a life or death stage. and hes fighting back harder than ever before. even with all he's accomplished he now has two things he needs to thrive - something to prove and the will to keep making music. for now, Instead of complaining be thankful that Dre is still around and be greatful for what he has done. and be patient for what he is about to unleash. I know some of you want to know about Oh My God, so I'll address it on this next reply.

just to quickly address my man suga foots comments I have to disagree with you on some of your remake comments. Forgot about Dre DID NOT lift anything from the No Doubt song. yeah it does sound the same somewhat, however camara was very insistent and careful of not sampling anything. Dre and Camara came up with that track from scratch and the bassline was added. any similarity is coincidental. XXplosive was a track that was done way back when Colin Wolfe was still working with Dre. that was a sample, and we just made some additions to the original track dre and colin came up with. camara added keyboards so that is why he got credit.he wasn't one of the original songwriters though. anything dre and camara worked on when creating an original compisition was 100% original (i.e. Whats the diff, forgot about, some la, etc.) We used a sample on next episode, a sample on lets get high, a third sample was using the THX sample at the beginning. but suga foot thanks for bringing those things up to people. you sound like an intelligent and knowledgable person. I think everything else on 2001 was totally original. its been 3 and a half to four years since most of those tracks were done so I may have forgotten. just to let ya know I'll post something on Oh MY GOD and DETOX on a new thread. peace.

suga foot thanks for bringing those things up to people. you sound like an intelligent and knowledgable person.
Respect 8)
Oh, there is one more sample but it's so obvious that we both forgot it, "Murder Ink" sampled the Halloween Theme.
-
damn, suga - you are on top of shit. i'm beginning to wonder if you were in the studio with us. all kidding aside - i ran through all the tracks in my head and the final sample count was 3 songs and the thx sample. it seems like we worked on those tracks 2 decades ago. those tracks seem light years away from what we're doing now. anyway, my point was that MOST of 2001 was original compisitions using live instruments to create a minimalistic sound that has been copied over and over and over again.

Exactly, thats the reason why everyone says Dre's recent production is boring.

Thanks Once Again For The Post - Just The Info In Those Puts Peoples Minds At Rest :)
I Hope, Like You Say, Dre Takes This Anger & Frustration Of Being Pushed Back On This "Ledge" And Uses It To Make Amazing Music!
Mellow I Dont Think You'll Be Reading This But On The Off Chance You Are : What Is Happening With Dre & Quik? They Working Together At All, I Ask Mainly Because Some Of Quiks Lyrics On His Latest Track "Streetz Iz Callin" Got Me Wondering If The Recent "Addictive" Court Case Had Caused Friction Between The Two?
Once Again Thanks For The Post & Have A Good Christmas & New Year!

though i have been getting tired of dre's recent beats this post has restored by faith that dre is cooking up some classics, my faith had fallen of a little with production on man vs. machine. but now im anticipating the fuck out of his new shit, i hope this pushing towards the ledge let's dre pull out his best production to date to fight back.
good read mellowman and peace.

Are people really speakin negative about Dre's recent production ? I dont know how anyone can doubt the man's work.
He is the Michael Jordan of hiphop. Sometimes Jordan has a bad game (especially since he came back from retirement lol) , but you dont ever doubt the legend. I can already say that DETOX will be the greatest rap album EVER. That should be common knowledge.
-
Amen, i'm speechless :o
Thanks for dropping in Mellowman, have a good christmas, looking forward to hearing from you in the new yr. Let Dre know that his real fans are 100% behind him every step of the way.
-
It makes sense for Dre to go back sort of to his "roots," since he is recording his last sol0 album. It only makes sense to come back full circle. Thanks.
-
Cool post BUT i completly DISAGREE about there being no westcoast without DRE.
There are so many tight westcoast artists doing there thing and releasing AMAZING material. Sure ppl like Ras/Alkoholiks/Defari/DJ Quik etc may not be selling at all but they are releasing good quality music.
So as far as im concerned there doing there thing for the west and keeping it alive.
-
That was a nice read. Thanks for the info Mel.

It's great to see Mel Man come here and let us kno wwhat's happening. Personally I never doubted Dre in anyway although I know a lot of cats have a real short term memory. Dre is a true legend and I LIKE all the new beats he's done lately. Peace to Mel Man, Dre and Aftermath Records and everyone that's down with them.
peace

he's not aftermath's mel man.. just a mellow man.... hehe...
-
He's not Mel-Man. Stop debating on who he is.

I wouldn't say I "Doubt" dre or anything, my deal is I just wonder why he does anything if it isn't up to his standards. Some of the recent stuff really didn't move me very much, and yes, you're right, i've always said it's still better than the other stuff on the westcoast.
Also, why are you complimenting Talib and the Roots for making positive music? I compliment them too! I totally agree with that, but it sounds a little hypocritical coming out of Dre's camp, when he's the one that turned hiphop negative, and I'd even say he single handedly did it. If you're gonna point the finger at one person for making hiphop about violence and bitches, it's Dr. Dre. I realize you don't speak for Dre though it's just your opinions, and I agree with you.
Peace, thanks for the info~

He doesn't do that anymore. Back in his Row days he did, but now he is rapping about staying on top of the game, proving haters wrong, producing hits...not shooting anyone and shit like he use to.
