An Akon interview with AP, speaking on Lady Gaga's success and how it is leaking into the hip-hop world:
"That's what excited me about it. You got some straight hard hip-hop guys about to move into the dance realm. That's shocking when you got someone like Dr. Dre about to do a dance record."
"It actually sounds great. He played it for me, I was shocked. So I was like 'Wow, that's dope!' When the world hears this they might go crazy!"

Does this mean Detox as a whole is a dance record? Does it mean the first single is a dance record? Or is Akon just referring to a song Dre did with Lady Gaga unrelated to Detox?
-
At this point, whatever.
-
At this point, whatever.
hahaha yeah youre right, it couldnt be said any better than that
-
Hhaha
I feel Dre. He saying stay off my nuts to Dubcnn haters.
-
well... the beat will knock.
-
Sometimes "record" refers to just one song, not an entire album.
I don't see why people are so surprised, like they forgot Dre did California Love, or even a few Gwen Stefani joints that are as far from hardcore hip-hop as you could imagine.
-
"DAVID GUETTA!" he yells again a few minutes later, telling the assembled throng of staff that "Elvis just walked in the room!" And to me, "You don't know what you've hit on here. No one will ever have these two guys together again." Indeed. However, putting the dance DJ and Dre together does elicit more insight from Dre. He apparently "had a ball" at Guetta's Fuck Me, I'm Famous night that he runs with his wife in Ibiza.
"I have to go out to clubs now," he says, referring to preparations for Detox's release. "You need to understand what people are listening to."
-
It's true though. It'd be silly for Dre to drop an album that's out of touch with the times.
-
maybe detox won't even be a hiphop album
-
as TRG mentioned, the beat will bang like california love, Fire (50/PCD joint, that beat go hard)
and yeah, when akon refered to ''record'' he most definitely meant song and not a whole album .
-
Before you guys freak out..."California Love" is a dance record. "Still D.R.E." is a dance record. Pop = popular music.
-

Exactly, look at Mary J's "Family Affair", 50's "In Da Club"...dance records. As long as the beat bangs, it should be fine.

Yeah those are some great examples too. "Family Affair" was / is amazing.

Pop isn't necessarily "Dance" music. As you said "Pop" is "Popular Music", but "Dance" is a genre as well.
I'm thinking by Dance, he's referring to electro sounding music at around 120 BPM... at least that's my interpretation.
-
Still d.r.e. is a dance record?

Yeah that is my thoughts on dance as well. More along the lines of house or techno

Detox - Dr Dance :P

I have seen people go buckwild when they heard Still D.R.E., but it's not a dance song. Dr. Dre did a song with David Guetta and you expect them to have done a hip hop record together? That song he did with Black Eyed Peas must be a hip hop record too then. In fact, here's another nice dance song:
http://www.youtube.com/v/sMU6MtBqJy0
But before you all freak out, let's give this song a chance before we hear it.

lol@ that. You're spot on Effex. Whatever Dre comes up with, I'm sure it will be a hit. But damn, what's with hiphop/house crossovers?

?? Aye. Those tracks considered pop because they got mad airplay? California Love is just horns, nothing pop about it, that and Whats my name sampled old school funk.

Yeah, exactly
Cali Love and Still DRE were straight Hip-Hop records that became popular...
You could dance to them, but they definitely weren't "dance' records as far as genres go
You can probably dance to the Rolling Stones and shit too, but dudes weren't making dance records
-
fuck a dance record :puke: i blame Timbaland's influence for this.
the news is strange though: out of all the people, Akon got the chance to hear this record? :eh:
-
Yeah back in '96! I doubt that he will be able to be better than 2 Unlimited ;)
-
sounds like hes torn as to what he should put out. He should look to BP3 if he wants to keep it hip hop and still have success.
-
lol at some of y'all thinking dance=popular music. It's a genre of music just like hip-hop or rock.
-

Come on man, just because "California Love" was a huge hit doesn't make it a dance record. That shit was hardcore, but it was just so damn dope that it blew up mainstream. Yeah sure, you can dance to it, but I could also dance to "Nuthing But A G Thang" or "Wit A Dre Day" but that doesn't make them dance records.
...Anyway, let's wait till we hear this dance joint before we criticize it.
-

looool
-
damn like all the time if this song get released all of u will be on dre´s dick again

Else back in the 90's I used to bump this song all the time and I still listen to it on regular bases : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dyx4v1QFzhQ

Did still dre just get called a dance record? LOL
-
Did still dre just get called a dance record? LOL
It obviously influenced by 90s house. ::)
-
a dre dance record could be incredibly dope, i wouldn't judge until you've heard it. but its gotta be groovy, that 'fire' track was kind of pants. and the average dance track has way more switch-ups than the average dre beat...
-
David guetta does GARBAGE music. if dre takes guetta as a reference this is really fucked up! dre YOU are supposed to create the new trend , not follow it..
-

true, but i already know that i don't like dance music.
i'm sure Dre will add his own twist to it, since he usually doesn't copy other people.
and fuck switch ups if the sound is corny: i like Dre's simple stuff

Honestly, how was California Love NOT a dance record? Just because Dre and Pac are the artists and not Jodeci or something doesn't mean that it's a hardcore song that happens to be danceable. Let's see:
West Coast Poplock sample? Check. "In the state where you never find the DANCE FLOOR empty." "Shake it, shake it, baby." "Bumping and grinding like a slow jam." Don't be foolish, it's a dance song.
And mentioning those Dr. Dre songs doesn't matter, you could dance to damn near any hip-hop song if you wanted to, but Cali Love was a West Coast anthem to be danced to... which is why whenever I go to any clubs in So Cal or even when I hit up Vegas, I will still hear the song played among whatever current mainstream songs they play.

I think it's like people said, it's a song that you CAN dance to, but does that make it a "dance" record.
I think he really meant stuff along the lines of Black Eye Peas and Lady Gaga. That's being fair too, I'm not even really counting Trance and Techno music.
Let's face it, this is the new Dre record...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A68j28KQaik
-
Why do I think that this is going to be a huge club anthem if it happens? And from what I understand Akon means a real dance record, like real dance music, not Cali Love or anything like that.
This is an example of what it may sound

I get what you're saying, but I don't get why people can't comprehend that California Love is a dance song. Just because there are guys rapping doesn't mean that it cannot be a hip-hop dance/club song. It sure isn't gangsta rap, so you can call it what you want.
Shit, you can dance to country music if you wanted to. But the intentions of Cali Love were very clear.
-
Well I highly doubt Dre is going to drop a collabo with Scooter anytime soon.

Cali Love is a hip hop song you can dance to. When Akon talks about a dance song he doesn't mean a hip hop song you can dance to. The closest to a hip hop song he could mean would be something from Will.I.Am.
-
some of you probably consider that song from Akon & David Guetta R&B as well, lol
-
well the she thang finally just coming out of the closet

That's a dope song but I'd rather classify this as "house" rather than "dance"
-
Does it even matter? "Detox" ain't never comin' out.
We'll get atleast 8 detox albums after dre dies.
-
It sounds like Dr.Dre is going back to his roots. I bet he can make better dance beats then Rap.
-
Guess he misses the days of the World Class Wreckin' Cru
-
What if he just produced a dance record for Lady Gaga? Since Lady Gaga is signed to Akon's label. That would explain why Akon has heard this track.
-

Yeah, i don't really get the difference between dance, house, electro and all this shit though. I'm a gangsta lol 8) :P
well the she thang finally just coming out of the closet
love your responses, you must be a funny person
Oh and something else, Dre probably knows more about dance music (in general, I don't want to mess with genres) than most dance DJ's and fans out there. He was doing this shit back in '85.
-
Tbh when americans say dance they mean everything from garage to electro to house. Obviously I'd prefer he went the Trip-hop route rather than David Guetta style.
Check this trip hop song and the mood its able to create:
http://www.youtube.com/v/rZv9R-KWcJM
Hopefully Dre isn't too over-protective of his legacy so when he dies we will be able to hear some of the unreleased music. As people have said there must be at least 5 different Detox albums due to changes in direction. From the stuff we heard on Dretox to more Gunit influenced stuff he was gonna put out in 05 to the orchestral music with very clear instrument sounds to this.
-
you guys are seriously posting techno songs in here. THAT KIND OF MUSIC IS GARBAGE UNLESS YOURE OUT OF YOUR MIND ON DRUGS
-
i saw this same video and said WHAT.THE.FUCK.
FAIL!!!!!!!!!
-
well the she thang finally just coming out of the closet
exactly , doing a dance song (maybe with David Guetta) would be the last step of his coming out :camp:
-

Thats kind of what I was thinking lol

good point.
i better cover my ears then :-X

LOL at some people starting to show interests and saying dance can be an overall good music in case of Dre would drop this kind of song ... still funny how some artists music (read Snoop, Dre , DPG , Quik) will always be defended here regardless how wack it is /can be
-

From what I understand most of us do not say that Dr Dre is going to be a great producer for Dance, we just say that some tracks are dope and it's a good kind of music.
The track with David Guetta is putting me in the mood to go out to clubs for example.

WRong lol
-
Trip-Hop is hell of dope. Don't know what the fuck y'all fucking with. UNKLE is my shit.
-
Dance music is nothing new to Dre. Even after his World Class Wrecking Cru stint he made "Panic Zone" and "Something 2 Dance To" with N.W.A.
-
Thinking about Dre producing a dance/trip-hop/dub-step type of record made me realize how far behind america is in our music
-

+1. If Dre decided to wear skirts and high heels you would see theese spitlickers defending it to death. Pathetic.

After reading that post I busted out loud laughing, mafuckaz was looking at me like I was stupid. But its real shit
