Title: Mausberg - Non Fiction (retail product)
Post by: Matty on February 24, 2010, 08:12:25 AM
just got this album today. didn't realise this was such a badly produced product - from the album case/inlay to the cd itself. looks like some home copy or something.

"Mausberg’s album, Non Fiction, was released posthumously in 2000 on Sheppard Lane Records. Were you happy with the final product?
Oh, no, not at all! I wasn’t satisfied with the mastering. I spent a lot of money personally; maybe 40 grand in the studio [to] produce it right. When I finally mixed the record, I gave it to Stan Sheppard. He took them to this hole in the wall mastering plant. It made the whole album sound like an MP3 as opposed to the big, lush, analog albums we are known to make. So of course I was unhappy. We can’t even find Stan Sheppard to get the original master tapes."

its testament to quik's mixing that it still sounds so good, even with the cheap mastering. i wasn't really aware of the issues surrounding this release before. i wonder how it would of sounded with brian big bass doing the mastering like with the rest of quik's releases. a shame because this is an incredible record.

You probably got the reissue

what's the difference?

The sound transfer off a little bit

I notice there is a little more static and seems to have some sound or continuation gaps between tracks on the reissue , also the artwork is darker and less vibrant on the reissue, I have both version

wow thanks for the info. i'm guessing the original is quite a bit more $$. i got two copies of rhythamalism that are different. the reissue is more cheaply produced in terms of the casing/inlay/cd, not sure about the sound quality though....

Didn't know there was a reissue. It seems that mine is the original.

What I found weird in the booklet is that it's only the credits in their strict forms, not a word mentioning that Mausberg was shot to death or some words from his close collaborators. A cheap posthume release format wise, but still dope music.

great info.  not sure what version i have.  i bought mine off of amazon from a seller for $25 recently.  great buy.  i could tell there was something a little off with the mastering, but like other folks said, it still sounds pretty damn good.  any chance you could post the whole interview that that excert was taken from?

i think you can tell which version it is by the colour of the yellow on the front print. i have the OG pressing on my comp and i couldn't really notice any difference in the transfer on a first listen. but dude above said there is, prolly need to listen real closely.
