NEW YORK -- It just got a lot tougher to throw against the New York Jets.
A few hours before the NFL's free agency period began, the Jets improved their secondary in a big way by agreeing in principle with the San Diego Chargers to acquire talented but troubled cornerback Antonio Cromartie on Thursday night.
The Jets confirmed the deal.
League sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter the Jets will give the Chargers a 2011 third-round draft pick that could turn into a second-round pick.
Cromartie has one year left on his contract and there are no plans for his deal to be redone now.
Cromartie was an All-Pro in 2007 and will team with Darrelle Revis in the Jets' secondary, making them possibly the best cornerback tandem in the NFL. Cromartie replaces Lito Sheppard, who was released earlier in the day after one disappointing season.
It could be a welcome change for Cromartie, who has struggled the last two seasons. He has 15 interceptions in four seasons since being the 19th overall pick out of Florida State in 2006, but the Chargers were dissatisfied with Cromartie's performance late last season and in the playoffs. General manager A.J. Smith made it clear he would try to trade him.

One of Cromartie's low moments actually came against his new team in the playoffs in January. Cromartie froze as Jets running back Shonn Greene hit the hole at the start of a 53-yard touchdown run that gave New York a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter of a 17-14 win in the AFC divisional round. Cromartie eventually caught up to Greene and gave him a shove well after he'd crossed the goal line -- but he had already drawn the ire of fans and apparently the Chargers.
The 25-year-old Cromartie also has had his share of legal troubles. He has dealt with at least five paternity suits; he has fathered seven children by several woman. Cromartie also had a bar patron claim that he hit him in the head with a champagne bottle hours after the team's victory at Denver last November. San Diego police later said there was not enough evidence to prove the claim.
He was also disciplined by coach Norv Turner for breaking team rules regarding tweeting from the team premises.
Despite the issues both on and off the field, Cromartie gives Jets coach Rex Ryan an athletic player with loads of potential.
In his second season in 2007, Cromartie set the Chargers' franchise record with an NFL-leading 10 interceptions, and added two more picks in the playoffs as San Diego made it to the AFC championship game. He also was credited earlier in the season with the longest play in NFL history when he returned a missed field goal by Minnesota 109 yards for a touchdown.
He boasted the next season that he wanted to break the NFL record for interceptions with 14, but had just two while playing throughout the year with a hip injury. Cromartie had three interceptions last season.

I love the move, the guys got amazing talent, under rex ryan I think hes going to live up to his potential, especially with revis helping him out.The jets defense is going to be scary next season when you add cromartie, kris jenkins back from injury and possibly addelius thomas after the pats cut him.Not to mention what they add in the draft.
I wouldnt mind the jets giving up their first pick for brandon marshall.

The Jets are gonna be trouble to pass against now, as if they already weren't before. Revis will still be one on one with the number 1 and Cromartie will be helping double the #2.
-
this defense will better than #1. ;D 8)
now we just gotta sign Ed Reed & we can be crowned. ;D 8)
-
QBs will be picking on Cromartie all year lol
-
Lot of ppl talk a lot of shit about Cromartie. The guy isn't half bad but also hasn't come close to living up to the potential. He gives up and looks lazy on some plays. He's certainly not good enough to be a #1.
With that said, the Jets made a very good move. With Revis on the other side, Cromartie makes for a very solid #2. I wish the Titans traded for him like ESPN was rumoring.
QB's will have to be forced to try and pick on Cromartie for obvious reasons - will see how it works out - but if I was a Jets fan, I love the move (for now).
-
Cromartie, no matter your opinion on him, is our best possible option for #2 Corner.
even if he doesn't play phenominally & he'll get the chance to with every QB in Football afriad to throw it Revis's way, i still can't be upset with him; because i'd rather him than anyone we currently have.
big move. 8)

Its not a BAD idea picking him up. Just dont see it as a big difference maker.

Cromartie was the #2 corner on the Chargers. Quentin Jammer was always covering the opposing teams best WR while Cromartie would blow coverage and miss tackles on the #2 WR. Unless Revis schools Cromartie, he is doomed to make the same mistakes with the Jets.

he is just an athletic guy with one big season. after that season he's spent most of his time getting burned. He gambles too much. He's like Deion Sanders...without the talent.

There should be a rule against having Revis and Ed Reed in the same backfield.

based on what the rest of the league says about Sanchez, is he even elligible for a "Sophmore Slump"?
don't you have to be good? :P

I think rex and revis will bring out the best in cromartie. And if he doesnt play to his potential ryan has no qualms about benching him, look at kerry rhodes.Playing in san diego is not the same as playing on the jets under rex ryan I think it will bring out the best in him.I think the jets d is looking beastly now,all they need is a pass rusher.

yeah, if Cromartie can't thrive in the best defense in Football with one of the best defensive minds in Football & learning from THE BEST corner in Football, the guy just isn't that good lol.

Yeah, the guy is only 25 hes got lots of room to grow.Heres a couple nice plays from him...One off shallows god.

I spoke to Jesus last night and he told me you're a liar. Jesus Christ has 10,000 consecutive passes with no INTs to speak.
As for Peyton's INT; that's text book Indy receivers. In this case it's Wayne, AGAIN, who doesn't have the ability to fight for his spot or the ball. Peyton was Brady ruled and while I don't think it should be roughing the passer I do expect Balls to be under-thrown when you get hit there at that moment. But that ball is more than catch-able by any WR, much less your number one or soon to be #1. He just has to jump towards it with two hands and bingo. But they don't want guys like that in Indy. It might get them some Superbowl rings. Eric Moulds when he used to play on the Bills would have caught that ball 100 out 100 times.

^seriously? :D
i remember a certain pass to Austin Collie in the AFC Championship game before halftime where Jay & I both said that if Strickland (i think) easily could of made a play like this on that ball if he didn't jump way early.
well, maybe not a sick one handed grab, but at least gotten a hand on the ball; if Manning led him, it would have been a sick toss & grab by the sideline, instead of a jump ball you're blaming Wayne on.

Did Collie make a play? No. The DB just misjumped, but the ball was dead on in Collie's hand.
No name me a fucking QB that can lead anyone when he's hit under the knee mid throw? The point is Manning can't be perfecr always and they need WRs that can make plays in traffic. They have never had any.

a situation where you need a Randy Moss figure, if he wasn't too far down the field to turn around & jump with Cromartie to just try to break up the into.

Of course it was a shit throw. He was hit at the feet as he threw it. There is something called science. With in science there is an area called physics, and the mechanics of human physics. I suggest you read up on basic science and logic before you respond to the post. A man throwing a ball to a certain point will miss that point short if his legs are taken out from under him mid throw. The only way that throw would have made it on target would have been if Manning over threw it 5 to 10 yards, knowing the guy he could not see was about to hit him in ankles.

so with all that being said, you're blaming the pick on Reggie Wayne because he was running his apparent route down the sideline & couldn't push himself forward & break up the amazing one handed pick by Cromartie?
the whole point of Jay's video was to say, he can even make a play on the best QB in the game; we've gotten off topic from there, but i still want to know how Reggie Wayne, who clearly was not banking on Cromartie making a sick handed grab falling backwards, is at fault when it looks apparent that he was a good 5 feet away from Cromartie & was playing it like that pass was going to just make it over the finger tips of Cromartie & he'd either get his feet down & go out or get nailed by the safety running at him.
i'm not good with these physics you're laying down, because you know, i'm retarded, but i'm starting to think that Peyton & Reggie were on the same page of exactly how that play was going to play out, but the defensive end got in the way of that. therefore, making Peyton's pass short of it's intended mark & away from his reciever & Cromartie made a play.
give Peyton any WR in the history of the NFL (take your pick) on that play & maybe a few of the greats would of broken up the pick & at best it would have been an incomplete pass.
regardless, yeah, maybe Cromartie can slack on a few plays, get burned here & there, but he can be a playmaker like that too & hopefully the Jets can take all his potential & turn him into 3/4ths of what Revis is. 8)

Darrelle Revis was thrown at 98 times this year by opposing QBs (6.125 per game)
Nnamdi Asomugha was thrown at 27 times this year by opposing QBs (1.687 per game)
Talk about shutting down your half of the field and instilling fear in opposing QBs 8)

I'm not blaming Wayne. I'm explaining his lack of ability. It's not his fault. He's not a tough guy WR and the Colts make no effort to draft or build such WRs.
Look at the play; Wayne made no solid effort to grab that ball. Cromartie knew right away the ball was going to be short. He even misjudged it too short and that's why he had to lean back for the one handed grab. Wayne should have seen it was going short the same time Cromartie did and instead of going to the ball he decided to sit and hope it gets to him anyway. Hines Ward jumps for that ball. Even if the top WRs in this league don't get there in time or misjudge the jump they would at least make the attempt. Reggie Wayne wants to be the number #1 WR for the #1 QB in the league; I expect more effort. If he made the jump and Cromartie got it anyway fine. Even though I don't think it would be possible for a WR with two hands to lose that battle against Crom's one hand. The point is the effort. Say want you want about Patten or Branch in terms of speed and skill but they made the effort to make the catch when the throw wasn't there.
Manning's under pressure from Merrimen and does his best to get the ball out in time. He didn't, but it was still in position for the WR to make the play. Manning has plenty of bad INTs. Quite a few against Ed Reed, but that wasn't one of them. Merrimen deserves the most credit for his rush and well timed hit. Of course with the new Brady rule that play gets called back, but Shawn still made the play. Cromartie misjudged the ball but his athletic talent saved the day. But a little more effort from Wayne would have at least broken up the play.
And when I say Moulds makes that catch every time I mean it. In Tenn he was nothing, but those two or three years in his prime in Buffalo I saw him rip intercepted balls out of DB's two hands in mid air. He'd have gotten that no problem.
Maybe it is Manning's fault though. He's too perfect too often in games and in practice that his WRs never get used to off target throws and it kills them when it happens. I think the Colts should bring in Brady once a month and throw to the WRs in practice so they can get used to those kinds of throws. Or just let Reggie practice as the punt returner once a week.

yeah, but look at the teams.
the Raiders have like the worst rushing defense in the world & for passing he was your only threat.
teams aren't going to be retarded & throw it his way, when they have 4,000 other options to beat you guys.
not to take anything away from Asomugha, he's awesome & i'd say he's the second best corner in Football; but Revis has shutdown every number one WR on every team they played; including Randy Moss, TO, Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Steve Smith & Ocho Cinco; pretty impressive.

Revis also has far more help then Nnamdi. Asomugha is truly on an island by himself out there. Revis is fairly young....give him some more time to show consistency. If you took a shapshot of Cromartie from his one great year...you could have said he looks like the best corner in the league. Lets see if Revis does this for another 3 to 4 years in a row.
