Title: 2010 a rebirth of west coast rap?
Post by: Si-Chiggedy on April 09, 2010, 04:50:43 AM
damn... everywhere you go you get these dope news. It seems like 2010 is the reincarnation of west coast rap so far. I mean first we had a dope warm-up from Terrace Martin's free EP's which were more than delicious musically. And day after day there was more dopeness to come. E-40 dropping a great new album with some of his best lyrics for years (that's not questionable whether you like the beats or not) and great features. Brotha Lynch released a very dope record like going back to his roots. Then Kokane released his twilight zone single which is nuts, announces a new album for summer with ATL affiliation which makes it even more crazy.

And it goes on, Tha Chill announces a new record as well. Then MC Eiht comes round the corner announcing a new album coming on Premo's label with beats done by him as well, with a dope ass title. Suddenly we get another "breaking news" that DJ Quik is about to drop a duo-record with (OMG) Suga Free and a solo record as well. Then you got Cypress Hill coming out on Snoop's Priority records with a nice summertime single.

After that we will see two new Dogg Pound records, 100 Wayz is goin finally to be released on Priority as well. Kurupt's new record with nearly 100% terrace Martin production and a new single with Xzibit.

As if this wasn't enough Murs talks about releasing a set of 10 new albums with new and unreleased material from which the first one is a collabo with 9th Wonder again and it just sounds beautiful. Then there's a new Too Short interview where he is talking about a collabo album with E-40 (finally) and his own new solo record. And you think "wow cool, looks like it's going to be a nice year musically".

Then Dre announces there will be a first single for Detox featuring Jay-Z and you think about "damn, why is that?". And when you just reached the point to think of Detox like a compilation of famous east coast and south rappers, Ice Cube comes along and telling people to look out for him being on Detox and Dre lacing him a beat for his own new album which has a dope ass title as well and sounds like it's gonna crack yo system. And you get to know that Snoop and Game recorded shit as well.

Last but not least you got a battery of other new albums which may come out this year:
Spice 1, WC, Xzibit, Game, Nipsey Hussle, Damani and I dunno who I forgot, there are too many this year.

I don't know what y'all think about it, but I feel like it's a rebirth of west coast rap right now and I'm really looking forward to these records. I have been so pessimistic for the last years but everything this year sounded very promising.

It's just repeat business. You take Dre dropping Detox out of the picture, it's the same people who have been releasing albums for the last 6 or so years. How can you call something a "rebirth" when it's just business as usual?

the only west coast albums that will be released, and would grab any attention would be RED and I AM THE WEST

it will be another year of mixtapes from the The New West unfortunately. wish the kids get their act together and get on the shelf. Maybe they should make peace with Dad and as for child support...

ITS ICE CUBE NIGGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats the thing, that this year we got many good releases from the west coast OGs, so its not like only the 'new west' will be droppin mixtapes (dont expect any albums)

That's not a West Coast comeback. It's the same people who've been dropping albums. The releases just all happen to coincide on the same year, this go around.

The reason why I consider this a comeback is that the music is sounding way more like back to the roots compared to the last years. Just listen to the lyrics or watch the visuals. I know that these people aren't new, but the it's the music that counts. I mean look at the combos: Dre / Snoop, Dre / Cube, Murs / 9th Wonder, Quik / Suga Free, Kokane / ATL that's on some back in the day shit.

and when you listen to the dj quik snippets, now this sounds just beautiful to me.

I hope y'all get my point now.

The west never left. There will always be good music if you are looking.

If you think the West will make a comeback to the mainstream, you will be disappointed. Detox will move a couple million units, RED will go either gold or platinum, and then it will be back to the usual. Regardless of how good the music is, it ain't gonna bring the west back I can guarantee.

I'm still not talking about moving big units, I talk about the quality of the music and the set of collaborations.

lmao are you kidding me?

2009 was like the shittiest year I experienced musically, especially rap related. It was poor, even "BlaQKout" wasn't as good as it could have been. You can try to prove me wrong but I can't think of 2009 being a great year for music. 2008 was weak but 2009 just "topped" that imo.

You're crazy, 2009 was a great year for hip hop, and better than the past few years. There were a ton of dope West Coast releases as well. Strong Arm Steady's In Search of Stoney Jackson, Souls of Mischief - Montezuma's Revenge, Gift of Gab - Escape 2 Mars. Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones. Sene and Blu - A Day Late and a Dollar Short. B Real Smoke n Mirrors.

By the way, In Search of Stoney Jackson = best west coast release of the year imo.
