Title: Have you noticed rap videos have become cheaper and crappier?
Post by: Prof@ssor on April 13, 2010, 04:16:08 PM
When you think about rap videos from 10 years or sumn ago, whether it was Biggie, Dr. Dre, etc... they all had a big budgets and were quite entertaining

Nowdays we have the most hyped rappers like Drake who make cheap, dull video's...and the rest has even crappier Rick Cordero directed videos, don't even talk about the West lol  :monkey_piss:

I mean i understand we've had a recession and all, but maybe the reason of the decline is the fact that people don't watch video's that much anymore? What do you think?

I don't even know why people make music videos these days. Most of them are those white background sell out shit videos anyway.

Record companies aren't gonna pay 250K + for videos anymore because they can't make that money back (unless you're Eminem or Jay-Z).

Although you can make a good video on a low budget.  It comes down to the cameras and the lighting.  If you're using good cameras and have good lighting, it doesn't really matter whats goin on, it'll still look good (imo)

Realistically, it's just not gonna happen like that anymore.

An expensive music video made sense when there were dozens of major and independent record stores to chose from and they could sell CD's for 16.99. Today, it just doesn't work. Music is so quickly processed and disposed of. They download the MP3 or watch the video on YouTube and are done with it within the week, sometimes within the day. It's not just videos. It's nearly everything related with music from magazines on down. With music, nobody wants to pay for presentation so they are either cutting it down or cutting it out. That's just how it goes.

The days of multi million dollar videos are over. The hype williams of the worlds are no more lol.Their just is no reason to sink that kind of money into a video, when people are going to watch it once or twice on the internet and never again.Shit I cant remember the last time I watched a video on tv.

YES. They made big budget videos because the market was 5 times bigger than what is now and there was no YouTube.

Yup. People were paying for quality in those days. If you look at even ten years ago, think about how much advertisers were probably paying every day for commercial time on TRL or Direct Effect. Back then, you could make a new video and use it to jumpstart your whole marketing campaign. Once the video was in place, you had the single on radio and by the time, the album was on store shelves, the label had already made their money back and then some. For TRL to have gone under is as big a sign as any as to how far the industry has fallen. Not only is there no place for the labels to launch videos by new artists but even the more established money-makers are pretty much out in the cold.

indeed . i sure as hell donīt miss the late 90s big budget videos where everyone was in a some kind of tube with flashing lights in the background, filmed through a fish eye of course.  puffy started the trend if i remember right and everyone followed. if you donīt get what iīm saying check some ol late 90s rap videos, they were basicly all the same.

you donīt need a big budget to make good videos and films. itīs been proven lots of times and there will always be some low budget films thatīll make their makers rich

^ exactly. budgets are low, no doubt about it. the thing is you don't need no budget to have an idea, and videos these days have none, just a bunch of muthafuckas on some background...

Music sales aren't doing well anymore - record labels aren't giving away massive advances and budgets on artists anymore. Unless you're guaranteed to kill it its going to be GREEN screening all the way.

To me Death Row Records had the most classic videos produced. When u viewed there Hoodz, it was set up like a Stoner Cartoon type of deal. It was just a surreal moment when u view them. Ruthless Records had some amazing videos also. Aftermath had dope Slim Shady ones (IMO Dr. Dre's seemed like a Generic club ones).

Today well....it's shit.
Title: Re: Have you noticed rap videos have become cheaper and crappier?

People don't watch videos anymore on TV.
Technology has changed so that anyone can make a dope video which makes artists think "Why the fuck should I spend this much on a video with these props, this director and all this when someone with a good camera and dope video editing program can pull off the same trick?"
Youtube plays a huge factor in the video game but the days of videos being premiered aren't the same.

Hell yeah rap videos now are all the fucking same .   Every single video you see on Mtv and 106 & Park are directed by the same person i think .

90's rap videos were unique

I agree with the thread-starter.  Just look at Biggie's hypnotize and 2Pac's California Love, no hip-hop artist or director makes videos on that level anymore.  But I'm not really surprised since audiences have declined in recent years and people aren't really caring.

me too, but it was a standard by that time, kinda like autotune hooks are now . many of the old rap videos were shot through fish eye and it was great until everyone started imitating .

but i agree with you 100%, the idea is what counts . but i guess it comes with the times, most songs have no real lyrics anyway . and iīm talking about mainstream

Post by: Detox Is A Myth!!! on April 14, 2010, 06:14:03 PM
I agree with everybody who has been saying it's not the videos these days that suck, it's the ideas behind them.  Come up with an original idea and you will make a dope video regardless of its budget.  But these days hip hop is not about originality but formulas because the labels fear there's so little margin for error i.e. room for experimenting with new ideas.

the early 90's had the best videos and they were low budget..

"nuthin but a g thang"
"shook ones pt. 2"
etc.

i wish videos would be like that again actually showcasing the lifestyle of the city of the artist instead of some green screen room.. smh

Truthfully, I miss music videos more so for the fact that they kept a lot of these style junkies away from making feature films. Now, we're stuck with movies full of music video images.

I never catch videos anymore unless I dreadfully turn to 106 & Park... but usually you will catch some HALF WAY decent stuff on BET's The Deal. Too bad it's on in the middle of the night.

It's funny though, on channels like MTV Jams and MTV Hits you still see videos for songs you had no idea existed. It's too bad that these are premium channels.

These days you have to be up at 3:00AM to catch a video on MTV, SMH... so much for "Music" Television

I don't remember the last time I turned on the TV to watch any videos, but I check WSHH every day pretty much and I see some pretty dope videos up there every now and then

Brotha Lynch, Devin, Eminem, Twista, etc. are probably the most recent artists that come to mind to drop actually dope videos, although there are a few others I could think of from last year from other artists

but overall I agree, music videos have gotten shittier the last few tears but it's the fact that BET no longer has Rap City and The Deal is on at 3 AM, and like others said who still watches 106 & Park? as far as MTV, ain't nothing to say about them and haven't for years  8)
