Was the California Love beat meant for DPG first? Just like Pac's Cant C Me ?

or they just used the Joe cocker sample first?

Nah, it was supposed to be Dr. Dre's first single from "The Chronic 2: Papa's Got A Brand New Funk". When Tupac came to Death Row, Suge Knight decided that "California Love" will be Pac's song and not Dre's. I think DJ Jam is the only one that has the original Dr. Dre solo version of the song.

Damn. Never heard of that. And word? Dre solo on the beat. Would love to hear that OG version.

Well actually I thought Dre was secretly keeping it to be the first single on his first Aftermath album. Suge found out Dre had the track and made and everyone put forth their best work for Pac.

With regard to the Knick Knack Paddy Wack track, it came out in 97 on the In Tha Beginning There Was Rap comp as I said. The song is a remake of the classic EPMD track of the same name off their 1991 album Unfinished Business.

So while both that and Cali Love sample the same Joe Cocker song its sort of unrelated.
