Like someone else said, when Wide Awake first obtained the rights to all the unreleased Death Row material they said they also have a lot of unreleased album covers. So I'm not understanding why they're using post-Death Row pics of Danny Boy and Crooked I.
-
This album is great, imo.
DB can sing his ass off. Beats are classic mid 90s Quik and Devante. This is how R&B is supposed to sound.
Seriously, Danny Boy is an incredible singer... I always enjoy listening to his stuff. His tone and control are just out of this world. And he was like 18-19ish when he recorded this material, making it even more impressive.
-
just skimmed through it quick...sounds pretty fuckin sick...especially steppin...
i think they fucked up though...sounds more like quik on the talkbox on track 5...and it REALLLY sounds like roger on lets ride...
-
Where can i "obtain" this cd? ;D
-
Yeah, couldnt find the album around, anyone got it? hows the mixing?
-
Where can i "obtain" this cd? ;D
your local neighbourhood music store ;D
-
This album has some GREAT songs on it. DJ Quik is amazing with R&B. I just wish the sound quality reflected the stellar production by Quik. Great to hear the 90's again; its like a breath of fresh air.
-
I Got "Just Ride - Danny Boy feat. Roger Troutman & Jojo (Of Jodeci).......Produced By DeVante Swing" ON REPEAT OVER HERE !!!!!
LUVIN THIS !!!!!! (Anash50 Knows What He's Talkin 'Bout, THIS IS R&B !!!!!)
WEST !!!

went lookin for this at 3 diferent record stores here in SD. nothing.
from the snips the production sounds like the vintage quilk I grew up to love. i love it when he used live musicians in his produtions. this is a must have for sure
-
Just like everyone else, i think this album is fuckin great. That era of Quik is something else.
The bassline on Blow Your Mind Away sounded a little like black mercedes to me :-[ im just trippin balls i guess
-
absolutely great music, but the sound quality is beyond terrible. it's just plain awful. i'd like to hear what quik has to say about how they've mixed and mastered his unreleased productions for this disc.
-
Jesus christ the mixing/mastering is freakin horribleeeee. Great music though i love dj quiks beats..
-
i cannot understand why they always mix this shit so bad.. great album with classic devante and quik productions
-
Its funny that So In Love from the Boxset sounds better than the So In Love on this album. Also the Come When I Call Remix has that stupid hiss sound in it. I have the Come When I Call CD Single and that track is flaswless on there. No hiss at all. Really dissapointed with the mixing with most of this stuff especially Its All About U.
-
Yeah the mixing isn't that great on it, but you know what...
It almost sounds like a tape cassette, which in this case ALMOST works cause it makes it more authentic, lol.
On second thought... >:( >:( >:(
EDIT: WTF! Did anyone hear a skip near the end of "Between Me And U"... I must be trippin.

I've heard at least 2 skips on this album
-
ok I listened to it and here's what I think:
Best tracks for me are Steppin, Between Me And U, Can I Come Over, Think Its About Time, Blow Your Mind Away.
Worst Tracks are Its All About U , If U Don't Mind.
Devante's Part on Its All About U pains my ears.
-
Second Death Row related R&B release after Michel'le. Both albums are fire. i can only complain about mixin on Danny Boy, maybe Wideawake tryin make their trademark by that shit ;D
-

Yea. The version of Come When I Call Remix on the It's About Time is the exact same copy of the song that has been floating around the internet for quite some time now.
Since they are resorting to putting a bootleg quality version of the song out, this is just another piece of evidence that by the time WA got the catalog, a lot of masters were missing, stolen, or messed up.
Do you mind upping your version of Come When I Call Remix? :D And since you have the CD I wouldn't mind .wav lol.
-
album is good. the mixing is a joke!
-
This is WideAwake's best release so far - "Steppin" is my shit, vintage Quik production 8)
-
those amazing production credits are so fucking wasted on danny boy. like he's aight but damn quik and devante couldve used these beats elsewhere for a better artist.
i'm still checking this out i mean basically almost a whole album of unreleased quik productions :o. if the mixing sucks like you guys are saying i'm not buying the shit though. i refuse to support half assed work on wideawakes part.
-
after listening to the album (i really like it) i must say it`s a pitty that DB never released an album on the row. this is material that would go double platinum if it would`ve been released between 1995-1997. i don't understand suge sitting on 300 tracks and wasted his talent for some appearances on hooks or ongs on soundtracks.
-
I must admit, this shit is pretty damn nice. I agree with the rest of you on the mixing tho. Too bad Quik couldn't do the mixing =(
-
imma cop this shit! wen do it drop 8)
-
So In love is my favourite song. Classic Quik production 8)
-
Anyone else notice the "So In Love" track was off the Death Row Hits compilation they released previously.
-
6 - Produced by Dametrius Ship
damn whats his damn name?
dametrius ship
dametrius shipp
demetrius ship
demetrius shipp
dimitrius ship/shipp
who was that guy anyways?maybe the danny boy song was done at the same time when he produced "toss it up"?same session, etc.?
somebody get some info on that guy. i know he did some shit with rnb group "troop" and bobby brown.

What about that Danny Boy release ---> http://www.amazon.com/Come-Up-Danny-Boy/dp/B001C3B8I2 ?
-
www.youknowigotsoul.com just posted a Danny Boy track frum tha album, Check It Out !!
WEST !!!
-
Wow, amazing music here (can't go wrong w/ Death Row Danny Boy, Quik/Devante production). This shit sounds like The Show, The Afterparty, The Hotel 2. Only songs I'm really not up on are that Church interlude and If U Don't Mind. Fav's are So In Love and Can I Come Over. Best Wide Awake release by far!
-
co-sign... so in love and can i come over are just beautiful pieces of music..... Quik should have done much more RnB, truly a great artist with a range of styles and genres... plus Danny Boy can sing his ass off!
-
Man there a skip on Between Me And U at 3:12. That's one of the best songs as well. DJ Quik did a great job producing these tracks. Was hoping for more flute tracks like Welcome 2 Death Row or So In Love.
-
What about that Danny Boy release ---> http://www.amazon.com/Come-Up-Danny-Boy/dp/B001C3B8I2 ?

On the real, that's something I've been asking and never understood myself... this shit would have been SLAMMIN in 1997, I could've even seen them releasing it a little after Toss It up and the buzz off that single... This is a fantastic example of that mid 90's R&B
-
How many this sell?
-
What about that Danny Boy release ---> http://www.amazon.com/Come-Up-Danny-Boy/dp/B001C3B8I2 ?
I think that's that Shortyo bootleg that was supposed to be released back in 08..

Post scans of the booklet

Post scans of the booklet
buy the album leecher
-
Ordered my copy and wating for it to arrive.
I was thinking also, imagine if Danny Boy and Nate Dogg had done a joint album on Death Row, how crazy would that have been?! Maybe with Danny on his smooth, love the ladies tip and then Nate with the f a hoe g-funk style combined together? We can only wish...
-
Post scans of the booklet
there's nothing to scan. the "booklet" doesn't even fold out. it's literally just one sheet of paper.

no, i wouldn't say its like a bootleg.
the opposite side of the front cover has the tracklist plus some credits like executive producer/album sequencer/mixer/mixed at, etc... and then thats it. no thank you's from DB. its real plain and simple
-
I'm still jamming this album on the regular. Seriously great album which could have been a certified Death Row classic had they dropped it nearer the time it was made. Kinda pissed at the quality of the mastering though - there's quite a few setbacks such as:
- Between Me and U - skips a couple of times at different points in the song;
- Church Interlude - some random static briefly cuts in at one point and interrupts the singing;
- Ride - as someone mentioned vocals seem to get louder as the song progresses;
- It's All About You - what the hell is up with this one? Someone dropped the supposedly unmastered version of this not long ago and it's miles ahead of the song on the album. Danny Boy sounds like he's singing in a cave and the first talkbox sounds like it has been done recenty and layered on the top of the track without being EQd properly.
Also, how can they spell DJ Quik right for the most part on the back of the CD, but the one song put a C in his name?! How can someone not spot that sort of thing? If they want their product to sell well they should take care of presentation at the very least.
I swear if money was no object I would buy the catalogue off of WIDEawake and send all the songs to get professionally mixed and mastered.
Anyway, rant over. I enjoyed the CD and will continue to bump it. Best of the WIDEawake releases thus far in terms of unreleased Death Row shit.
-
my copy arrived on friday...bullshit release
-
i bought it and ,,,fuck why the fuck did i do that.
