US and canada are probably the only countries that care for superbowl, the rest of the world probably doesnt even know what it is.  So it makes no sense to call it the greatest event of the WORLD....cuz truly its NOT!

AAAAND  more than half the people go to superbowl parties just to eat, drink and watch commercials...hardly anyone watches the game.

More people watched the Champions League Final than the Super Bowl, but it must have been the poor people all over the world who somehow got a TV to check it out.

it's actually pretty big news that there is going to be a cold Super Bowl; definitely thread worthy.

Soccer fans just got mad because Hack said "the biggest & best sporting event"; which is hard to argue. ;)

"According to a survey, global viewing figures for the match averaged 109 million; this put the UEFA Champions League final above the Super Bowl (106 million viewers in 2009) as the most-watched annual sporting event in the world. Total figures, which included viewers who watched only part of the match, put the Champions League final even further ahead of the Super Bowl, with 206 million viewers compared to 162 million"

About 710 million people watched the World Cup Final in 2006.

To add to this, most people that watch the champions league final and World Cup, actually pay attention to the game.  Super Bowl on the other hand, it's a party basically but to be fair it is the most popular sport in the country and a shit load of people did pay attention to it.

Most of you guys were talking about people that have no shoes playing in the dirt is what makes soccer popular lol

do you just want everyone to admit that culture is what makes Soccer popular? would that be satisfying? lol.

alright, so it's culture, culture is what makes Soccer popular; because when kids are young their families nudge them in the direction of playing Soccer.

so? what's the point? it doesn't make it any less boring; in some cultures they eat bugs, does that mean they taste good? no. in some cultures they have communism, does that make the way the country is run good? no. so in some cultures they play Soccer, does that make it good? no.

there isn't any convincing people who don't like Soccer to start liking it because other cultures play it like it's religon lol.

considering the World Cup is a WORLDWIDE thing & people watch for their countries & in most of those countries Soccer is the number one sport & the Super Bowl is watched by people in other countries who don't have any direct relation to the sport, considering all the players & teams are from America.

my point being, something that involves the ENTIRE world SHOULD have more viewers than something that involves half of the states in the USA.

but since the NFL still gets SO many viewers from other countries, countries that don't even have a Football to throw if they wanted to, you can't just hand the NFL the L in that debate.

Not trying to convince people to like it.  It's just stupid when people diss it thinking they wouldn't be all up on soccer's dick if they grew up somewhere else.

that is the number of people who go to superbowl parties, but how many people do u see at these parties that actually watch the game??  maybe 1/5th of the crowd...the older people, women, hell most guys just drink, play games, goof off, eat....yea once in a while when something happens and people yell people turn to watch the replay but not many people watch the actual game.  So yea 100mil gather for a party but probably 20mil actually pay attention to the game.

Thats just close minded and ignorant stating one fifth watch it....Thats like saying one tenth of people actually watch the soccer game, they actually just like getting into fights with people getting drunk and singing.Because lord knows watching men kick a ball up and down a field isnt fun to watch. You want to see how the game is flawed?Watching penalty kicks in soccer LOL.Its basically a 99 percent ratio that the kick is going in the net the goalie doesnt even have a chance.

i guess, but it's a sport of national pride & most of this country is made up of immigrants.

also, all those kids in Europe don't even get to decide; they don't have Baseball or Basketball; basically forced to play Soccer if they want to be athletic.

^i'd have to flip those ">"'s. ;)

Baseball is a more refined, more competitive, more exciting Cricket & "our" Football is a more refined, more competitve, more exciting Rugby.

you can make the argument, we "stole the idea", but we turned them into sports 100 times better than Cricket & Rugby.

Basketball is cool, the NBA is weak though; i prefer College Basketballl; i can't stand watching these grown ass men flop on the floor looking for fouls; but they do that in Soccer too, so fuck them both.

lol I remember watchin Dahani Jones on the travel Channel when he went to England and played Rugby. He learned the game in a couple weeks, and played with some fuckin team out there. Dont know who they were. He even told them after the game, that football was a tougher sport...but was showin respect to rugby. I would love to watch some Rugby player run accross the middle of the field on a slant pattern with pads....and get lit up by Ray Lewis lol. Lights out. Rugby is nowhere NEAR the mans version of anything lol. Ive watched that shit...and its just one big mess. They dont take the hits that NFL players take.

I have no idea what Rugby team he played with or what level they were...I would have a hard time telling the difference between professional running around and falling down and amateur running around and falling down. The point is, I didnt come out and start dissin Rugby. You came out and decided to take a shot at Football. No matter what...people are people, and they are will only allow a sport to be so dangerous before they decide to take precaution and keep people from getting killed. Thats the reason Football needs pads. Its the reason Hockey needs pads. Etc. If Rugby players were taking hits that required pads....they arent idiots, they would wear pads. In the NFL, without a helmet and pads...you would have at least one paralyzed person per game with the blindside hits they take running at full speed. And world class sprinter speed at that

What? Regardless of whether you know a sport or not, in ALL sports there's a huge gap between top tier teams and local teams. My point is is that to say well he said NFLs tougher cos he trained for a couple weeks with a local team's a horrible example

And your right, each sport has guidelines to ensure safety but that doesn't mean that bad tackles and big hits don't happen, just like how in soccer two-footed tackles are disallowed yet we see them almost every weekend. The main difference between Rugby and NFL is that in NFL it seems to be more about highlight hits whereas Rugbys more about actual tackling, thats why there's no need for heavy padding. But how you can say Rugby's one big mess and easier as there aren't big hits is bullshit.

so ummm, what Rugby player makes over a million a year..?

if it was such a "hands down, better sport", it would be more popular; people in America would run to play that if it was "better".

But how you can say Rugby's one big mess and easier as there aren't big hits is bullshit.

well first off. What Im saying is...I  have no idea what level this Rugby team was that he played with. They could have been a top level type of team or not, i dont know. And Dahani obviously has played in the NFL...in College...and in High School for football. Probably even Pop Warner as a little kid. He didnt say the NFL was tougher. He said football was tougher. He is a starting linebacker on a professional Football team lol He clearly knows how to tackle and is more then likely faster then 90% of rugby players....all while being bigger and stronger as well. Like I said...if Rugby was a brutal enough sport to need pads...they would get them. If you played football without pads...you would have people dying every single year in the NFL no doubt. And if you think the NFL isnt about actual tackling...then you need to educate yourself on the game. No coach in America teaches players how to decapitate another player. They teach them the fundamentals of tackling without paralyzing YOURself even. But with it being such a physical game played at such a fast speed...you are bound to have big hits.

so ummm, what Rugby player makes over a million a year..?

if it was such a "hands down, better sport", it would be more popular; people in America would run to play that if it was "better".

Have u seen the crowd that gathers when there is an NFL game in England though lol. Can you imagine any Rugby team creating that kind of buzz anywhere in America? The Europeans seem so concerned with not liking anything American that they pretend there is no influence of ours over there lol. They are considering putting a fuckin NFL franchise in England LOL

He played against Blackheath who are in the same league as my local team, again my point is it's a shit example using his opinion cos he's not playing against top tier players, it would be like a top rugby player playing against a shit team then saying Rugby's tougher

is more then likely faster then 90% of rugby players....all while being bigger and stronger as well

LOL these are the comments which always crack me up, so you know this how?

And if you think the NFL isnt about actual tackling

Obviously it's about tackling but the tackling in NFL is sooooo poor, tackles get missed all the time

LOL @ the tackling being poor.Look at the athletes the nfl has and look at other sports.i would love to see a rugby star try to tackle a running back thats 250 lbs of muscle and can ran a 4.4 in 40 seconds coming straight at him.he would get his ass bowled over.

yeah, thanks to 'Roids NFL players are muscle packed brick walls. Fortunately it doesn't require any skills except to carry a ball with hands and hitting other people.  This sport is all about hitting people, but that's why Americans like it, neh? Big monsters going at each other.

lol Compared to what? Look at the level of athlete they are attempting to tackle. A professional rugby player would more then likely catch nothing but air attempting to tackle Chris Johnson. Youre talkin about an athlete with similar speed to Usain Bolt but the ability to make tacklers miss lol. Good luck. Not to mention runners typically have blockers so defenders are forced to take odd angles at times to get to the runner. To my understanding, in Rugby you are not allowed to have other players block for you.

Rugby players would obviously have a horribly difficult time adjusting to the NFL. You dont hear about NFL players who can make it in the NFL going and chasing their Rugby dream lol. But occasionally Rugby players try to break into the NFL. And like I said...they can possibly make a squad as a punter. But they will never be playing a skill position...and wont have much impact on the game if they could happen to make a squad. An olympic sprinter has a better shot at making an NFL squad and actually contributing then a rugby player would

Check it out tho...I didnt say shit about Rugby until somebody decided to attack Football. I personally see Rugby players as a minor league version of Football players. Football has many different positions with different skill sets. But there isnt one Rugby player with the athletisism of a Chris Johnson...and I guarantee you every lineman...and probably linebacker in the NFL is physically stronger then anyone playing Rugby. Also, at whoever said Rugby athletes aren't touching NFL athletes that's total bollocks, you're telling me people such as Habana, Rokocoko, Jonah Lomu (who actually turned down multi-million dollar deal to play NFL) aren't athletes? Lomu was a winger who was 6'5, 265 pounds and ran 100m in 10.8 secs and you're tryna tell me this guy isn't an athlete ::)

Anyways, I really can't be arsed to keep going back and fourth so i'ma leave it

Also, at whoever said Rugby athletes aren't touching NFL athletes that's total bollocks, you're telling me people such as Habana, Rokocoko, Jonah Lomu (who actually turned down multi-million dollar deal to play NFL) aren't athletes? Lomu was a winger who was 6'5, 265 pounds and ran 100m in 10.8 secs and you're tryna tell me this guy isn't an athlete ::)

Anyways, I really can't be arsed to keep going back and fourth so i'ma leave it

I should have been clearer when I discredited the athletisism of Rugby players....but saying, "European Rugby Players"  ;D

I like all sports, but I'd skip my own wedding for the Superbowl. I wouldn't skip lunch for the World Cup Final. So to me the biggest sporting event in 2014 will be the Superbowl.

Of course my nigga, I believe every word of it. Thing is, most Europeans would skip their wedding for the World Cup Final, but don't even know what NFL means when it's spelled out. The only NFL player I know is Peyton Manning, and I only know him because of dubcc-sports and espn, and I only visit those sites because of basketball. I'm quite sure that is the case for many Europeans, South Americans, Africans and maybe even Asians. Problem being, for the USA everything that is on top in the USA is also on top of the world. Most of the time, this is true. Not in the case of sports. That is what makes them mad and belligerent.

See, my nigga, if your team wins the NBA title, they call themselves "World Champions". WORLD CHAMPIONS. Because they won an American league. Isn't that just CRAZY?

I'm not using my personal feelings to argue one point over the other. I'm just explaining what the most important sporting event that year will be for me. Everyone is so busy trying to find an objective reason why one is more important than the other, and I'm just keeping it subjective.

Truth be told the anti football and anti rugby crowds both sounds like fucking morons.  To think the NFL is a bunch of nonathletic fat guys is hilarious.  And to think some 5'9 190 pound guy wouldn't get ran over by a NFL player is hilarious.   But at the same time, to act like rugby players are pussies is just as laughable.  Granted the hit aren't nearly as hard as they are in the NFL but those guys really do beat the shit out of one another out there.  This thread exposes a whole lot of dubcc ignorance.

With that being said...I dont just come out dissin. But if somebody else does...and calls a sport I see as a kids version of Football.....a "real mans" sport, I gotta address that shit lol

these are the words of a man who clearly isn't exposed to much rugby. The athleticism of both sports are on a par. Difference is rubgy has less stoppages and less padding, but the tackles are less dangerous.

Some of my first memories in life are watching Diego score goals against England in 86. I watch a lot of soccer and if it was only about the play on the field I'd agree that soccer>>football, but it's the week leading up to the NFL match that makes me say football>>soccer. There's just so much strategy involved. I spend so much time thinking about what plays should have been called, what game plan should have been put in place, what style of defense should have been used.

There is strategy in soccer but it's not even close to the NFL. An NFL playbook is like a physics text book to the average person. American football is a science as much as it is an art. International football is way more art than science. That doesn't make it worse, that's just why I like NFL better.

I don't know anything about the NFL, what makes it so much science? It's hard to fathom for me. Because I see the dumbest kind of plays in the NBA. Some coaches draw literally dumb plays and make dumb decisions in crucial situations, and also the players can be extremely stupid. Like literally stupid. So, no offense, it's just hard for me to imagine that in the NFL every player went to MIT studying rocket science?

To even compare the plays in the NBA to the plays in the NFL is absurd. The NFL is about studying game film all week, developing a strategy before the game, then studying patterns and adjusting your strategy mid-game, just as much as a it is about getting open, throwing the pass properly, opening the holes for the runner, and avoiding blocks, or tackling.

It very simply takes more brain power to be Peyton Manning than it does to be Christiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. No one said anything about MIT. I'll even dumb it down; the NFL is community college, but Fifa is grade-school recess; the faster and stronger and more naturally talented get to the top and the smarter don't matter.

And the coaching is at another leve in the NFL. That's why they have so many coaches.

Look at the 07 Patriots for example when they played the New York Giants in week 17. Steve Spagnuolo was the Giants defensive coordinator and all season long he was watching the Patriots and devising the a plan to shut down their offense. The Patriots were a behemoth that year running up and down the field breaking offensive records week after week. But Steve Spagnuolo and Tom Coughlin (the Giants head coach) felt that if they make it to the Superbowl they'll be facing the Patriots and if they show them the defense they've conjured up to beat them the Patriots will be ready for it come Super Bowl time. So they decided to come with another defense; less blitz packages, less up the middle pass rush, more soft coverage in the secondary. They played on the theory that if they keep the ball in front of them they can force the Pats to make mistakes, and the Pats won scoring almost 40 points against that defense.

So when the Superbowl came the Pats felt they had taken the Giants best shot and can just take it again and win, but Spagnuolo took the cat out of the bag and instead of using a defense he made up in one day, he used the defense he'd been working on since week 2 and the Pats didn't know what hit them. They ended up scoring only 14 points, were rushed hit and sacked all game, and lost the championship and the perfect season. And if not for a mental decision 5 weeks prior by the Giants the Pats would have won the championship because they would have been prepared for the defense.

No coach in soccer will ever say "hey Zidane, don't score today. We'll need that goal for the next game". But the Giants defenders were told not to blitz, not to cover tight, and to leave the pocket open, because they didn't want the Patriots to see anything they were going to see when it mattered.

That's why Football is beautiful.

Just give him some of those weight loss steroids that Maradonna used back in the day and he'll be alright.

And let me just say this; the best players for the job in the NFL will do a lot better in soccer against soccer players or in rugby against rugby players than the best soccer and rugby players combined will do against NFL players in Football.

A soccer team of a bunch of NFL kickers vs FC Barcelona may be a 12-0 joke, but Peyton Manning will have 12 TDs in the first quarter against the Soccer/Rugby team in football. And in rugby a team of linebackers, Full backs, and running backs might cut it pretty close against rugby's best squad, if they don't outright win.

Definitely NFL and College Football is by far the sport that requires the most "tactics" or strategy, but soccer is up there and easily has more tactics than plenty of other sports.  Soccer has had a fairly recent revolution of difference using tactics these days then they did in the 80s and before.  Obviously you don't tell a player to not score, but there are plenty of things that can be said before a game that will prepare you for a match tactically.

I was dreaming about Robben secretly training an attack where he goes from the right side to towards the middle of the field, like always, then suddenly turns to the right again while losing his defenders for a split second, then shooting with his right foot for once in his life, scoring the 1:0 against Inter. That would have been epic.

I'm not comparing soccer to normal sports in terms of strategy. I'm comparing it the NFL. The worst team in the league can destroy the best team strategically even if the best team outplays them on the field all day. If the game plan is right the best team gets blown out. That cannot happen in soccer. The best team can lose by having a bad day athletically and lose.

The NFL is full of kickers that played soccer their whole life. They weren't good enough to make any decent squads but they still know how to play. And offensive lineman, running backs, and full backs play the game in a similar style to rugby. And special teams practice rugby plays for last minute kick offs.

What about the NFL style of Football, offensively or defensively, do pro soccer or pro rugby players know? They have a better shot beating the original Dream Team in basketball.

Just explain to me how I'm wrong. I never said the NFL players would win at the other sports. I just said they had a better chance.
